Canberra, Brisbane share spoils

The much-anticipated Westfield W-League Grand Final rematch between Canberra United and Brisbane Roar ended goalless in hot and humid conditions at McKellar Park in Canberra.

The result was a fair reflection of a game in which both teams created a number of half chances but were unable to penetrate two well-organised defences.

The closest either team came to a match winner was a late Caitlin Munoz free kick that was brilliantly pushed onto the bar by Brisbane Roar custodian Hoshima Kishi.

The champions made an uncharacteristically nervy opening in defence as new goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold got to know her back four in competitive conditions for the first time.

A back pass from Ellie Brush had Arnold backtracking as Christine Walters covered to clear before a ball was allowed to bounce in the area and Emily Gielnik's acrobatic overhead effort just cleared the crossbar.

The defensive errors continued as Caitlin Cooper turned over possession on halfway allowing Lana Harch to break two on one but her square pass was too heavy for the supporting attack and Arnold gratefully cleaned up.

Ariane Hingst did her best to lift a strangely lacklustre United with a lofted pass that was intercepted by the Roar back four but it was the visitors who made most of the running in the opening stanza.

It took until the 32nd minute for Canberra to craft a meaningful opportunity but when they did they should really have opened the scoring. A superb cross-field ball from Walters found star striker Michelle Heyman free in the area but her header lacked direction and drifted harmlessly wide of the far post.

Shortly afterwards Munoz launched an audacious effort from 40 metres that dipped over the bar with Kishi watching on anxiously. Chances were at a premium though as the first half ended 0-0.

United almost went in front within a minute of the restart as Heyman met a corner with a dangerous downward header that evaded Kishi but was hacked clear off the line.

However, it was a sporadic moment in a half in which midfield dominated.

Brisbane continued to offer a threat going forward, particularly from set pieces, as defender Clare Polkinghorne strode into the penalty box from a corner to meet the ball with a firm header that flashed wide of goal.

The Roar introduced Tameka Butt for the hard-working Hannah Beard as they sensed that the points were there for the taking whilst Canberra responded by sending on Hayley Raso for the speedy Georgia Yeoman-Dale in an effort to add more dash to the front third.

It was Brisbane who threatened next though as Katrina Gorry latched onto a through ball and, having got there ahead of the advancing Arnold, should have done rather better than lob harmlessly over the bar.

Munoz then went close six minutes from time as Walters sent forward a raking pass that the experienced Australia international flicked on but could only look on as the ball narrowly evaded the target. The midfielder went even closer with her free-kick that crashed off the woodwork.

Yeah, Canberra didn't play as well as they have the potential to but even without that I thought Roar looked much better than I expected them to, and they were playing well as a team. Polkinghorn got player of the match too.

I was only vaguely keeping up with the Reds v Wanderers match, sounds like it was a great game though! 3 goals in 11 minutes to seal the win, wow. Hopefully a sign of good things to come for the Reds this season.

Jets debutante dreams big

October 21, 2012
Alex Rowe

ELIZA CAMPBELL dreams of representing her country with the Matildas, and why wouldn't she? Today, at the tender age of 17, she will make her W-League debut for Newcastle against perennial title contenders Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval.

And if the way she's handled the steep learning curve is any indication of her footballing ability, she'll live that dream in no time.

Campbell is calm when talking about the season ahead, confident that her and the team's ability will help achieve a positive result.

''We've been training hard in pre-season and developing well as a team and everyone has really jelled so I think we'll give them a good run for their money,'' the Australian under-20 goalkeeper said.

''We've got a great team with some strong new imports from America and with players like Emily van Egmond in the squad I think we might surprise a few teams this season.''

Campbell's confidence isn't lost on Jets coach Wayne O'Sullivan, a character trait he thinks is a huge aid for the youngster. ''She's a confident girl and very competent,'' he said. ''Full of life and energy.''

But with youth come advantages and disadvantages, especially when you are the last line of defence.

''The advantage of being young is that you're fearless in many ways, you don't have preconceived ideas about things and you're a little bit more open minded and therefore can learn quickly,'' O'Sullivan said.

''But the reality of young players is that it's a week-by-week process. Obviously they don't have the experience to draw back on and they have to find coping strategies quickly, and when you're in goal it's a revealing role.''

The Jets have ample experience to assist Campbell at the back with veteran Hayley Crawford returning from a year out of football to marshal the defence alongside Gema Simon and Hannah Brewer, assistance Campbell is grateful for. ''Hayley Crawford is a great player, she helps out a lot at the back with instructions and organising,'' she said.

Newcastle have a full strength side for the match while Sydney will be without Kyah Simon, who misses the clash through suspension.

''Kyah is a hugely talented footballer, and we won't miss her, but they are a dangerous side with plenty of talent. I'm sure whoever they pick will do a good job,'' O'Sullivan said.

Rusty United starts with stalemate

DateOctober 21, 2012
David Polkinghorne

OPENING day nerves got the better of Canberra United in the first round of its W-League title defence, according to coach Jitka Klimkova.

But the reigning premiers still managed a goalless draw against last season's grand finalist Brisbane Roar at McKellar Park yesterday.

It extended United's unbeaten run to 13 games after going through last season undefeated.

Klimkova is yet to lose a W-League game since joining Canberra before last season.

''We were a little bit nervous and made a few mistakes with simple passes … but it's [the] first game, it's OK. We still have a lot in front of us and we'll be better, for sure,'' she said.

''It's a good feeling [not having lost], but the most important thing is we have to [do] better next time.''

Her analysis was spot on - it was a rusty performance by United and there was plenty of room for improvement.

The side still dominated large parts of the game and created enough chances to win it, but the finishing in front of goal lacked sharpness.

Klimkova put it down to nerves due to expectation as Canberra looks to defend its title.

The defence looked especially shaky, with the back four and new goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold struggling to gel.

Brisbane's best chances came from turnovers at the back, with centre-back Caitlin Cooper especially guilty.

Getting caught in possession, poor back passes and a lack of communication were the main problems in defence.

But Klimkova was confident that, with a little more time, the relationship will improve as United looks to replace injured Matildas stopper Lydia Williams.

''The co-operation between the defence wasn't the best [but] we are together three weeks, this is the fourth week actually, and it takes time [to gel],'' Klimkova said.

''And [Arnold] is a young goalkeeper. She has big potential and it was her first game with Canberra United.''

United's passing game lacked its usual flair.

The players sorely missed midfield maestro Sally Shipard, who is recovering from a knee injury.

Caitlin Munoz said it would take some time for her, new recruit Ariane Hingst and Jennifer Bisset to form an understanding.

Munoz produced Canberra's best chance, striking a thunderous free kick that was tipped onto the crossbar by Brisbane goalkeeper Hoshimi Kishi with five minutes left in the game.

Reigning W-League Golden Boot winner Michelle Heyman failed to open her account for the season, but had a header cleared off the line in the opening minutes of the second half as Brisbane managed to hold out the champions.

Both Heyman and Munoz had a couple of free headers but failed to get them on target. One positive from the game was winger Hayley Raso's pace, when she was brought on as a substitute after 65 minutes.

''I always miss Sally,'' Munoz said.

''It'll take a bit of time for us three to click a bit more. I think we're all pretty attacking players so someone has to sit back, which is different for me.''

Klimkova's team takes a trip to Newcastle to face the Jets, Hingst's former club, for its round two game on Saturday. The Jets take on Sydney FC at 3pm today.

Victory women fall to Perth

Saturday, 20 October 2012 10:39 AM

Perth Glory have started their Westfield W-League campaign with a 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at Intiga Stadium on Sunday.

Glory controlled the play for the majority of the match and had the best of the opportunities, but could not break the deadlock before Kate Gill's 75th-minute strike.

Gill herself had squandered several golden chances earlier in the match, but converted when she got in behind the Victory defence and rolled the ball past Melbourne goalkeeper Brianna Davey.

Marianna Tabian doubled Glory's advantage with a curling strike in the 88th minute into the top right-hand corner of the Victory goal as the game opened up as Melbourne searched of an equaliser.

Melbourne barely forced Perth goalkeeper Carly Telford into action throughout the game, but did have small periods of control, which included late in the first half and just after the restart.

Almost all of Glory's first-half chances came from down the left as winger Tabain wreaked havoc with repeated crosses that put the Victory defence under pressure.

Glory captain Collete McCallum got on the end of one Tabain cross with a well-taken volley that forced a full-length save from Davey.

Melbourne's defence did not do themselves any favours with a number of turnovers deep in their final third.

Striker Tiffany Eliadis put a volley wide from just six yards when she got on the end of the Victory's best move late in the first half.

Shortly after, Elidias was felled and limped off after a hard challenge from Perth defender Tiffany Studman but returned to the pitch after half-time.

Caitlin Friend later replaced Elidias in the 65th minute amongst a host of changes from Melbourne manager Mike Mulvey.

Perth should have taken the lead early in the second half when they wasted two clear-cut chances just after the restart.

Sarah Carroll sprayed her shot wide after being left unmarked at the back post from another Tabain cross while Gill failed to get a meaningful touch on a Carys Hawkins long ball.

But Gill, who missed all of last season with a serious knee injury, eventually hit the back of the net as Perth began the process of atoning for last year's horror campaign

Last year's strugglers start on top of the table

From: The Australian October 22, 2012 12:00AM

THE W-League's traditional heavyweights kicked off the season in modest fashion, leaving last year's strugglers Perth Glory and Adelaide United sitting at the top of the table.

A pair of second-half goals saw Perth Glory, victim of a record 11-0 loss against Sydney FC last season, overrun Melbourne Victory 2-0 in stifling heat in the west on Sunday.

Boosted by the return of high-profile Matildas duo Collette McCallum and Kate Gill, the Glory impressed from the outset before eventually securing all three points with goals from Gill and Marianna Tabain.

Newcastle Jets seemed set to make it a three-way tie at the top only to fall victim to a Sydney FC comeback inspired by star recruits Sam Kerr and Ellyse Perry.

The Jets were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw at Leichhardt Oval despite holding a two-goal lead early in each half.

Two second-half goals in as many minutes from Kerr, both of which were set-up by Perry, saw the visitors pegged back.

...Perry, who represented NSW Breakers in their women's Twenty20 cricket matches on Friday and Saturday, also provided the cross for Alanna Kennedy's opener for the Sky Blues.

Perry has linked with her home-town club after last year playing for champions Canberra United, while fellow Matilda Kerr made the move from Perth as the 2010 champions unveiled a new-look line-up.

A day earlier, Adelaide, having won just two matches across four seasons of the W-League, staged a remarkable recovery to overturn a two-goal deficit with 10 minutes remaining and win 4-3 against new club Western Sydney Wanderers. New Zealand international Sarah McLaughlin proved to be the star turn with her late treble sealing the points for the Lady Reds.

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, last season's grand finalists, Canberra United and Brisbane Roar, battled to a scoreless stalemate.

Canberra, which went through last season undefeated, had the better of play but failed to find a way past an injury-hit Roar.

Canberra United lines up university sports hub

DateOctober 23, 2012
Fleta Page

Capital Football wants to be the first to follow the ACT Brumbies to the University of Canberra and build a ''boutique stadium'' at its new high-performance home.

The Brumbies, the university and the ACT government last week announced plans for a $15 million sports hub on campus, which will be built within the next 12 months.

Capital Football boss Heather Reid has talked to university vice-chancellor Stephen Parker about joining the Brumbies at a new multi-sport headquarters in Bruce.

While no formal proposal has been finalised, Reid said a home for Capital Football's high-performance program was needed, with a 2000 to 3000-seat stadium to be used by representative teams and W-League side Canberra United high on her wishlist.

''Ideally what we'd want is a stand-alone home of Capital Football high performance programs as well as Canberra United,'' Reid said. ''There's a range of things that we're discussing, which include access to office and other administration type accommodation, as well as the sport science and the physiology and the training fields and, hopefully, a brand new stadium.

''At the moment there's nothing between the size of McKellar or Deakin [stadiums] and Canberra Stadium, and that's a real limitation for us.

''We could comfortably get 1500 people to a regular game for the W-League if we were able to provide people with a proper seat.''

The Brumbies, university and the Labor Party have pledged $5 million each for the new sports hub.

The Labor Party's contribution, which is reliant on the ACT election result, is for community sport.

The Canberra Capitals are also expected to begin discussions about joining the Brumbies, ACT Sport and United at the university.

However, the Capitals and Basketball ACT still have plans to build their own boutique stadium on their current site at Belconnen.

The university already sponsors United and the Capitals.

Reid said Capital Football would be expected to make a financial contribution to the new stadium.

Canberra United is housed at the AIS in an arrangement to give the W-League team a permanent base during the season - one of United coach Jitka Klimkova's requirements to stay on as mentor - but the fields at Deakin and McKellar are used for home matches. Both stadiums have limited seats, but only McKellar Park meets the line-of-sight requirements for televising games.

Reid said a new stadium would need to cater for television, as well as corporate hospitality and spectators.

''It would be for marquee games, so when we've got United or the Rockets playing against the Central Coast Mariners, instead of having a game at McKellar - a stadium that's got 480 seats - we'd have hopefully a stadium with 2000 or 3000.''

Capital Football's other high performance programs use the Hawker Football Centre and Kambah pitches, which have little more than toilets and change rooms. That would improve under a new partnership.

The university hasn't said it will build a new stadium, but in a statement to The Canberra Times, vice-chancellor Parker said it ''welcomes discussions with other organisations on this proposal and seeks their thoughts and vision for the Sports Hub''.

Westfield W-League attracting international stars

Simon Jones
Tuesday, 23 October 2012 6:32 PM

Women's football in Australia has already been given a boost for the new Westfield W-League season with the inclusion of newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers FC, but there are a number of players who have already proven themselves on the international stage that are helping to grow the sport's profile in this country.

With Westfield Matildas and Football Ferns throughout the league - as well as German import Ariane Hingst at Canberra United and Japan's Hoshimi Kishi at Brisbane Roar - will we continue to see even bigger names moving Down Under in the near future? And what effect will this overseas contingent have on the development of local talent?

Adelaide United showed on Saturday that they are keen to distance themselves from their poor showing last season, edging out Wanderers FC 4-3 in a round one thriller.

The Lady Reds are one of several clubs to have called upon stars with international experience, boasting three Ferns who were part of New Zealand's 2012 London Olympic squad.

Sarah McLaughlin, Holly Patterson and skipper Abby Erceg all enjoyed an Olympic summer and have returned to add an international flavour to the league. But they aren't the only overseas footballers plying their trade in Australia.

Ariane Hingst pulled on a green jersey for the reigning champions on Saturday, but the German stalwart is no stranger to Australian football, having played for Newcastle Jets in 2011/12.

The calibre of overseas players can only be seen as a good thing for the growth of the competition, but it does raise the question of whether it will affect the development of local youngsters seeking to gain experience in the nation's premier women's football league.

Perhaps an influx of international players will be something that needs to be addressed in the future, but for the moment the Westfield W-League is still a breeding ground for talented Australian youngsters, and every club is keen to see a new star break into their first team.

Due in some part to uncontrollable factors - with seven Westfield Matildas who competed in last year's World Cup ruled out for the entire season with either lingering injuries or pregnancies - there has been a massive injection of youth throughout all eight teams.

And while international stars will always be welcome to raise the standard and profile of the competition, it's good to know the local youngsters are currently reaping the benefits of this burgeoning football league.

Checker on the rise for Lady Reds

Christian Mammone

Wednesday, 24 October 2012 12:55 PM

In just 12 months of football Adelaide United defender Emma Checker has debuted for the Lady Reds, received her first cap with the Australian U-17 women's team and been rewarded with a place in the Matildas squad – not bad for a 16-year-old.

Even before making her first appearance for the Lady Reds in October last year on the opening day of the 2011/12 Westfield W-League season, Checker had already featured at international level three weeks prior when she represented the U-17 side in a series of friendlies against New Zealand.

Following the three-match tour in Auckland, Checker was recalled in November to help her nation secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Australia failed to qualify but Checker's stocks continued to soar and within just over three months time she found herself training alongside Matildas Sarah Walsh, Heather Garriock and Melissa Barbieri.

The fullback was invited to join the Matildas at a training camp in Wollongong in March of this year followed by another held a month later at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

The invitation came as a surprise to Checker, who returned home from her Year 11 studies at Immanuel College in Adelaide to discover the news.

"I got home from school and mum told me what had happened, and it just really hit me ... it was a big shock and I didn't even believe it to start with," Checker recalled.

"The camps were amazing and I don't even think words can describe how good it all was.

"I was so privileged to experience something like that."

What came next for Checker was even more astounding, when she was named in a 23-player Matildas squad to take on New Zealand in a friendly match on June 24 at Win Stadium, Wollongong.

Although Checker was an unused substitute, the talented right-back was not disappointed, preferring to revel in the experience and enjoy a chance to sit on the bench alongside some of the country's elite female footballers.

"Training with them was one thing but getting to actually sit on the bench, watch them play and take in the skills and things they do on the pitch was a really good experience," Checker beamed.

"Listening to how they communicate was also something that has really helped me a lot."

The 16-year-old knows she has more to prove before she can take the field on the senior international stage, but is confident the wisdom and knowledge the veteran Matildas shared will hold her in good stead ahead of her first appearance at full international level.

"I was actually pretty glad I got to sit on the bench because I don't think I was ready to go on and play at that level," Checker said.

"I have a lot to work on before I deserve to be put out on the pitch representing the country.

"I believe I've worked hard enough to train with them but I still think I have more to do before that happens.

"I have to prove my place - it's not something that just gets handed to you."

Although a regular spot in the Matildas remains distant by her own admission, Checker is more than ready to handle the pressure of a greater role with the Lady Reds both on and off the pitch.

On the field Checker has become a vital cog in coach Dave Edmondson's plans to bring success back to a team that won just its second game in three years last week following a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Away from the playing ground she now assumes responsibility as the face of the Lady Reds, often tasked with representing the club at promotional and media related events.

Just two weeks ago, Checker was the Lady Reds' delegate at the W-League season launch in Sydney where she mixed with some of the league's more experienced figureheads.

The sudden rise to prominence and added attention has been challenging for Checker but she feels she has no problem in rising above the external distractions when she laces up her boots.

"It's been a pretty big challenge because it's obviously not something that I have experienced before," Checker said.

"I've found it difficult sometimes to take it all in but it's something I should get used to.

"It's really exciting to be put up on a big stage, but it's not changing me as a person. All I'm really doing is representing the team.

"I'm pretty good at blocking it all out and it's always been something I feel like I'm good at … I can walk onto the pitch and nothing matters.

"What people say to me and what's happening off the pitch doesn't affect how I play - that's my time … that's the team's time."

Checker, who trains several times a week while playing a game every weekend either at home or interstate, has also not let her emergence in Australian football detract her away from her top priority - completing high school.

"To do well in school is pretty important for me … it has to be up their as one of my main priorities," Checker said.

"Soccer feels like it is a priority, but I know have to do well in school for me to do well in soccer because it is not something I can say that I'm going to live off of - that's just not realistic.

"I have to spend a lot of my lunch times going to see teachers and catching up on work but I know that's what I have to do … a lot of sacrifices have to be made.

"Time management is very important and I'm pretty lucky that the school is very aware of what it (football career) can take away from you."

Having achieved so much already, Checker could be excused for feeling overwhelmed or even getting a little bit carried away.

However, she remains level-headed and cautiously optimistic, refusing to get swept up in the mayhem that comes with her promising career and future.

"Sometimes it does hit me pretty hard that I'm at the highest level I can be, but nothing is taken for granted," Checker said.

"As soon as you think that, it will just get taken away from you because there are plenty of girls out there that are working just as hard and fighting up against me.

"If I keep doing what I'm doing, I know I can continue to prove what I'm made of."

Behind the Scenes: Westfield W-League ad

Tuesday, 23 October 2012 3:00 PM

"Stay in school and do something that you love. And if it’s football that you love, then play it as well as you can. And if you put in the hard work, one day, you’ll be sitting here, getting your make-up done, about to walk over there and say this...”

That’s Western Sydney Wanderers' Servet Uzunlar, talking to the camera, as she prepares to shoot the new TV ad for Westfield W-League season 2012.

This Thursday night at 7.30pm AEDT Football Federation Australia will release the official television commercial, exclusively through ABC Grandstand TV and www.w-league.com.au.

In anticipation FFA have released this behind-the-scenes making of the ad video.

Starring Westfield W-League stars Emma Checker (Adelaide United), Elise Kellond-Knight (Brisbane Roar), Michelle Heyman (Canberra United), Ashley Brown (Melbourne Victory), Emily van Egmond (Newcastle Jets), Aivi Luik (Perth Glory), Sam Kerr (Sydney FC) and Servet Uzunlar (Western Sydney Wanderers FC) the behind-the-scenes video showcases some of the game’s best players, skills and personalities.

I'm pleased to see they're doing a promo for the w-league, but surely they could have made it so it was ready before the season started?

New Jets recruit gloving her chance

By CRAIG KERRY Oct. 23, 2012, 9:58 p.m.

.TAKING over from Matildas captain Melissa Barbieri is a big enough challenge for any goalkeeper.

But when you are a 17-year-old W-League rookie, living almost 700 kilometres from home and finishing your HSC online, the task must seem overwhelming.
Yet new Jets keeper Eliza Campbell is making it look easy.

The Queensland Academy of Sport product from the NSW border town of Cobaki has made a big impression on Jets coaches Peter McGuinness and Wayne O'Sullivan since joining the club full-time six weeks ago.

Coming in as the first-choice keeper for Barbieri, who is pregnant and not playing this year, Campbell then earned high praise for her efforts on debut in the 3-all draw with Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

"Eliza looked like she'd been playing W-League for the past three years," O'Sullivan said.
"She was composed, she made a couple of great one-on-one saves and she covered in well behind on a massive field."

McGuinness said Campbell was showing no signs of the pressure that comes with filling the massive boots of Barbieri, who was the Jets' player of the year last season. Campbell said she was not worried about comparisons to the Matildas legend.

"She was a great player and I'm just going to do my best," Campbell said.
"I did pretty well on the weekend but hopefully we can do better on the weekend and get a win under our belt."

The early praise is reward for the sacrifices Campbell has made in switching to the Jets.
Living away from home and family while completing the HSC, the under-17 Australian keeper is working part-time as a waitress.

"It's been a big change having to cope living away from home but it's been good," she said.
"Making the decision was a little bit difficult but Pete and Sully made it easier, finding me work and accommodation.

"I'm missing home a bit but everyone here is pretty friendly."
She came to the Jets after departing QAS and Roar W-League coach Jeff Hopkins set up a trial with his Jets counterparts.

"I definitely looked at Brisbane but they didn't have a coach at the time and they weren't making any decisions so I decided to take the opportunity with the Jets, and it's been good," she said.

She is staying next door to McGuinness in Elermore Vale with fellow QAS graduate and Jets recruit Michaela Hatzirodos.

Alisha Foote, who has played for the Melbourne Victory and Brisbane, is the third member of the Jets' Queensland connection.

Newcastle play their first match at their new home, Wanderers Oval at Broadmeadow, on Saturday when they take on Canberra United.

'Realistic' Shipard postpones her return
Fleta Page

As the Canberra United midfield struggled to click in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Brisbane, regular midfield general Sally Shipard could only look on from the stands, a place where she will remain for at least one more game as she continues her recovery from off-season knee surgery.

Shipard was aiming to be ready for round one but had to reset that goal last week.

''My knees are good now, it's just a matter of getting the muscles back … I ran for the first time on Monday and my quads, I have never been so stiff,'' she said.

''It was really unrealistic of me to be aiming for that game. I probably realised that on maybe Tuesday or Wednesday, which was a good little epiphany for me.''

Shipard celebrated her 25th birthday at the game, but there were no wild antics as the vice-captain concentrates on her recovery and achieving her new return date of round three against Adelaide.

''I think that's certainly a realistic target … depending on how my body recovers over the next week, and puts up with the load I expose it to. We'll see … I'm working pretty closely with the physios.''

However, coach Jitka Klimkova said it may be an extra week before the midfielder returns.

''She works hard with her recovery, so hopefully she's back in 14 days, three weeks, but we won't hurry.

''I know it's a pretty dangerous injury, so when she's really ready she can play for us.

''But you saw [world cup-winning midfielder] Ari Hingst. I thought she played very well. She did Sally's jobs and it worked.

''It takes time to co-operate in the middle, and I'm pretty confident that this three [Hingst, Caitlin Munoz and Jennifer Bisset] in the middle can be great and dominate on the field.''

Shipard said having ruled herself out of the game made it easier to watch from the sidelines, saying: ''I was quite content sitting up in the stands, to be honest. I had accepted that I won't be back playing, so I wasn't really too eager to get out there and run around, but certainly was after the match.

''It was quite inspiring to watch them and it only really provided me with more motivation to get myself better so I can get out there as soon as possible.''

Simon Jones Canberra United focused on youth

Wednesday, 24 October 2012 5:57 PM

The Grand Final rematch between Brisbane Roar and Canberra United on Saturday may not have produced any goals, but there were plenty of positives to come out of the season opener.

With a raft of Westfield Matildas missing for the 2012/13 campaign - either through injury or, for Melissa Barbieri and Heather Garriock, pregnancy - the Westfield W-League has a much younger look to it this season, and Canberra United is leading the charge.

Coach Jitka Klimkova filled the final five places in United's roster with young Canberra players, and hopes the injection of youth in her squad will not only help her team push for back-to-back championships, but also develop local talent to boost the profile of women's football in the capital city and the rest of Australia.

"The best thing is they're all from Canberra, they're young girls and it shows it's great for the future of Canberra United," Klimkova said.

"They will prepare themselves for the W-League and the national team and I'm sure it can be helpful for Australia as well that we've picked the young girls for the squad."

The Canberra United team sheet on Saturday looked slightly different to last season's Grand Final-winning squad, and the surprising addition of Catherine Brown on the bench will do wonders for the confidence of fellow newcomers Grace Field and Samantha Wood.

The three Canberra youngsters are joined by returning locals Christine Walters and Sally Rojahn as the team strives for another Westfield W-League title.

Other Westfield W-League clubs have been feeling the pinch of injured stars recently, with Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar the hardest hit. Elise Kellond-Knight, Casey Dumont and Kim Carroll were notable absentees from the Roar's opening round match, with Dumont and Carroll expected to be out for the entire season. Sydney FC also have to do without Garriock and Leena Khamis.

While both sides will sorely miss their more experienced players, it's paved the way for a number of youngsters to take advantage of the vacant spots. Most notable on the weekend were the Sky Blues' youthful trio of Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr and Larissa Crummer.

Crummer shone on debut, but it was Kerr who helped Sydney FC claim an unlikely point thanks in large part to the 19-year-old's double for her new club.

The future is looking bright for the youngsters of the Westfield W-League, and Canberra United is setting the bar with their desire to shape local talent.

The Newcastle Jets Women will come up against last season’s Westfield W-League Champions Canberra United in their first home match for this season at Wanderers Oval on Saturday.

All 2012/13 Newcastle Jets Members receive free entry to every Jets W-League home match this season (not including finals).

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month the Jets are encouraging their Members and supporters to wear pink on Saturday to show their support for the cause.

The Newcastle Jets Women are proud to support the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation and the national Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation is a Newcastle (Hunter) based and founded non-profit organisation, which raises much needed funds to provide information and support for women and men diagnosed with, or being treated for breast cancer in the Hunter, and for their families.

Members and supporters can support the cause by purchasing items on the day or contacting Northern NSW Football for further information.

The Jets return home to Newcastle in Round 2 after a 3-3 draw against Sydney FC in Round 1.

Canberra United will travel to Wanderers Oval, Broadmeadow after a 0-0 draw against Brisbane Roar at their home ground last weekend.

Canberra United was crowned champions of the Westfield W-League in Season 4 after defeating Brisbane Roar 3-2 in the Grand Final.

Last season saw the Jets finish the season in fifth position with 12 points next to their name.

Throughout Season 4 the Jets and Canberra battled it out on the pitch twice with Canberra taking home the three points on both occasions.

They first met on the pitch in Round 5 at Canberra’s home ground of McKellar Park on the 19th of November.

Canberra gained the upper hand early with Sally Shipard scoring the first goal in the 29th minute. Michelle Heyman scored Canberra’s second goal in the 64th minute to put her team two goals ahead.

Gema Simon of Newcastle found the back of the net for the Jets in the 77th minute; however Heyman scored her second goal for the match in the 80th minute to end the game at 3-1.

The second game for the season was held on the 18th of December at Adamstown Oval, Newcastle.

Again Canberra showed their dominance in the competition with Taryn Hemmings and Michelle Heyman getting on the scoreboard for the traveling team.

Rhali Dobson of the Jets also found the back of the net, but they were unable to equalise the score line.

Amongst Canberra’s lineup for the match against the Jets, is ex-Jets players Sammie Wood who played for Newcastle in the first Westfield W-League season in 2008/09 and also Ariane Hingst who signed with Canberra after playing with the Jets last season.

With both clubs returning to the Westfield W-League and the Jets hosting their first home match for the season, the girls will be looking for a win in front of a home crowd.

Westfield W-League ins and outs

Friday, 26 October 2012 10:45 AM

Kyah Simon comes back into the mix for Sydney FC, see who else made the cut for your team with the ins and outs.

Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers FC
Saturday 27 October 2012
Leichhardt Oval, Sydney

The Westfield W-League’s maiden city derby takes the spotlight this weekend as Sydney FC face fledgling club Western Sydney Wanderers. Both sides showed enough in the opening round to suggest they will be highly competitive, and the action is likely to be as tense as it was in last week’s maiden Hyundai A-League derby between the pair.

Adding extra spice are a handful of former Sky Blues now donning the Wanderers strip. Captain Sarah Walsh, Teigen Allen and Servet Uzunlar are the most prominent former FC stars, but almost the entire squad have been coached by Sky Blues mentor Alen Stajcic at some stage.

Sydney FC will be boosted by the return of captain and 2011 top goalscorer Kyah Simon following suspension. First week nerves were in evidence last weekend for Sydney FC who found themselves 2-0 down early on, before Matildas stars Ellyse Perry and Sam Kerr inspired a comeback to share a thrilling 3-3 draw against Newcastle Jets.

Conversely, Western Sydney Wanderers somehow lost 4-3 after holding a two-goal margin in Adelaide with a little over ten minutes remaining.

Many of the Wanderers have been away from the W-League for a couple of seasons so adjusting to the increased tempo will take time, although there will be little respite from the Sky Blues’ pacy and athletic young brigade.

Another potentially epic match looms as champions Canberra United make the long road trip to take on a new-look Newcastle side.

The Jets were flying high until midway through the second half last weekend, before being overrun in the latter stages by a high-energy Sydney FC, surrendering their two goal lead before hanging on for a 3-3 draw. Nevertheless, the Jets showed more than enough to suggest they are serious semi-final contenders.

Their new American trio and returning Novocastrian Hayley Crawford offer invaluable experience, while Emily van Egmond continues to mature rapidly.

Canberra didn’t have the same fluency in their scoreless draw against Brisbane that they showed throughout last season, but coach Jitka Klimkova says she has ‘confidence in my side’. History is on the side of Canberra who have lost just one of eight outings against Newcastle.

These two spent last season in a desperate battle to avoid the wooden spoon, but the pair have opened the new campaign sharing top spot. The manner of their wins providing yet more evidence that the Westfield W-League will be the most even in its five-year history.

Victory for either team will provide significant momentum and set up the opportunity to be genuine competitors for semi-final contention. Adelaide have found a gem in attack in New Zealand striker Sarah McLaughlin who made a remarkable debut, with a ten-minute match-winning hat-trick to help her new side to an epic 4-3 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Perth, too, have significantly strengthened in the off-season, notably with the arrival of Matildas’ headliners Collette McCallum and Kate Gill. The pair were both prominent in an important 2-0 win against Melbourne Victory on home soil last weekend.

One-time national team player Ella Mastrantonio returns from injury, however Aivi Luik’s hamstring injury means the former Roar midfielder is still at least a week from making her Glory debut.

Perth Glory squad: 1. Carly TELFORD (gk), 2. Sarah CARROLL, 3. Carys HAWKINS, 4. Bronwyn STUDMAN, 5. Shannon MAY, 6. Sasha ANDREWS, 8. Ella MASTRANTONIO, 9. Rosie SUTTON, 10. Jaymee GIBBONS, 12. Melbourne Victory v Brisbane Roar
Saturday 27 October 2012
Veneto Club, Melbourne
Local kick-off: 4pm
Referee: Rebecca Durcau
AR1: Laura Moya
AR2: Melanie Closter
4th Official: Joanna Charaktis

Both teams failed to collect road wins last weekend and thus will be anxious to collect all three points to kick-start their respective campaigns.

The Victory suffered a 2-0 reversal in Perth, while the Roar secured a hard-fought scoreless draw against Canberra in the Grand Final rematch. The Victory, who had only a relatively short lead time with new coach Mike Mulvey during pres-season, will be boosted this week by the arrival of tall striker Jessica McDonald.

The American is the Victory’s third and final international signing following the return of compatriot Danielle Johnson and Swede Petra Larsson, who will arrive in the coming weeks.

The Roar’s squad is starting to take on a more familiar look with the return this week of defender Laura Alleway from a stint in England, and midfielder Ashley Spina from a year-long absence with a knee injury. Matildas star Tameka Butt can also be expected to start after returning from injury last weekend with a high-energy 30 minute cameo off the bench.

A familiar feel to inaugural cross-town derby

DateOctober 27, 2012

ONLY a week after the A-League Sydney derby gripped the city, the W-League will follow with its first cross-town derby. Sydney FC will play Western Sydney Wanderers in the inaugural women's derby but Sydney coach Alen Stajcic says the two clubs couldn't be any more familiar. Nearly all of the Wanderers have been coached by Stajcic at either Sydney FC or the NSW Institute of Sport and this afternoon's clash at Leichhardt Oval will be a meeting of two teams that spent many years together as one.

''Three-quarters of that team have been at the institute at some point or another and most of them for a fairly lengthy period. They all know me pretty well, I know them pretty well and the players know each other pretty well so there's nothing to hide from each other,'' Stajcic said. ''It's just who can exploit each other's weaknesses and who can get each other's strengths over the line but I don't think there will be any surprises in terms of abilities, tactics or techniques.''

Wanderers captain Sarah Walsh leads a contingent of players that swapped the sky blue for the red and black hoops of the city's west.

Matildas pair Servet Uzunlar and youngster Teigen Allen also made the switch after spending many years under the guidance of the Sydney FC and NSWIS coach. The two clubs still share a strong bond that's developed over many years training and playing together. Their extensive knowledge of each other will lead to tough physical and mental battles, says Stajcic.

''For sure, at the old Institute training sessions we used to have grudge matches but I think this is the first official one where there's been a referee in the middle. I'm sure they'll all enjoy that, they'll be feisty and then after the game they'll be friends again.'' Sydney FC will have greater options in attack with the return of captain and last season's top scorer, Kyah Simon, from suspension. Dual football and cricket international Ellyse Perry will miss the inaugural W-League derby because of her cricket commitments. Perry helped rescue Sydney FC last week with two assists in their 3-3 draw with Newcastle Jets but Stajcic believes the defender's absence won't be a big loss.

''Everyone in the team can do that job, Ellyse adds a lot of value coming forward but defensively we've got a lot of players that can do the job she can,'' Stajcic said.

Edwina Lawry Reds and Glory look to atone for seasons past

Friday, 26 October 2012 4:22 PM

The Westfield W-League kicked off in earnest on the weekend with a hotly contested round of matches, including the Grand Final rematch between Canberra United and Brisbane Roar. And although that game ended in a 0-0 stalemate, there was no shortage of goals elsewhere.

Adelaide United, in particular, could not have hoped for a better start to the season after registering only their second win in three years.

The Lady Reds looked set to continue their miserable run of form after trailing 3-1 to competition newcomers Western Sydney Wanderers FC. The Wanderers were quickest out of the blocks in their debut match, thanks largely to an early double to Westfield Matildas representative Servet Uzunlar.

But a late surge, courtesy of a stunning hat-trick from Kiwi midfielder Sarah McLaughlin, ensured Adelaide United got their 2012/13 campaign off to a winning start.

Despite last season's results, Adelaide United have looked a much steadier ship under the tutelage of coach Dave Edmondson. The current team has a vastly different look to that of last year's cellar dwellers, with 12 new faces making up the squad.

Joining them on top of the standings after round one is a similarly rejuvenated Perth Glory outfit following their 2-0 triumph over the Melbourne Victory - a match-up which always serves to comically render one team's name ironic.

While the players and coaches of both sides will be aware that sterner tests lie ahead against competition heavyweights - the likes of Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC and reigning champions Canberra United - both Adelaide United and Perth Glory were justifiably delighted with their respective starts. With a regular season of 12 rounds, every win is crucial.

The results are particularly encouraging for those hoping for a more competitive league this year.

While the Hyundai A-League has witnessed a remarkable spike in public interest this year with the addition of high-profile international imports, the Westfield W-League still faces an ongoing battle for visibility and funding.

As well as producing quality on the pitch, this imbalance is best redressed by a consistently competitive league with closely contested games each week to engage the supporters. Which makes the weekend's results all the more heartening.

The competition also has a more balanced look about it this year with the introduction of the Western Sydney Wanderers FC restoring the league to an eight-team format.

The next round of fixtures sees Perth Glory host Adelaide United on Saturday, with both desperate to maintain their early momentum, as well as the mouth-watering prospect of the first ever Sydney derby.

Omnisport Kete fires Sydney to victory

Saturday, 27 October 2012 4:59 PM
Sydney FC claimed bragging rights in the Westfield W-League's maiden derby with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Leichhardt Oval.

It was a crucial win for one of the traditional competition heavyweights after being held by Newcastle Jets on their own turf in last weekend's opening round.

The match proved to be a good-natured contest despite the Wanderers fielding several former Sydney FC players, plus numerous others who had worked under Sky Blues coach Alen Stajcic at the NSW Institute of Sport.

The two teams made a high-tempo opening to the contest but goalscoring chances remained limited in the early stages.

There was proving to be little between the teams, with Sydney FC's Alanna Kennedy rising well only to power her header narrowly over the crossbar.

It was to be the only opening of the early stages, however it proved to be a portent of what was to come, with the Sky Blues eventually making the breakthrough approaching the half-hour mark.

New Zealand striker Emma Kete, one of Sydney FC's many new signings, made a goal from nothing by finding a yard on her marker just outside the penalty area, before hitting an inch-perfect shot inside the top corner of the net.

At the other end, Jenna Kingsley was a constant threat with her pace and soon forced Sydney FC goalkeeper Sian McClaren into a save after a threaded pass from former Sky Blues favourite Sarah Walsh.

Kingsley then returned the favour for Walsh but McClaren again denied the visitors by racing off her line to make a smothering save.

The second period opened in similar fashion to the first with goalkeeper action at a premium.

However, Western Sydney Wanderers stepped up the intensity, notably creating a good opening just past the hour mark, with Trudy Camilleri firing into the side-netting after Catherine Canulli set up the chance with a deft flicked pass.

Despite the sometimes end-to-end nature of an entertaining match there were few goalmouth incidents as a Sydney FC side struggling for fluency hung on for three crucial points.
