Canberra thump Newcastle

Saturday, 27 October 2012 4:47 PM

Canberra United started their Westfield W-League title defence in emphatic style with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the Newcastle Jets at Wanderers Oval, Newcastle, on Saturday afternoon.

Canberra had the better of play in the first half but were kept scoreless by some good saves from Jets goalkeeper Eliza Campbell as the sides went to the break locked at 0-0.

But the floodgates opened in the second half at the visitors scored five goals in a 20-minute spree to blow out the scoreline.

The win sees Canberra still undefeated from two matches after being held to a 0-0 draw in the opening round of the season against the Roar, while Jets remain on one point from their opening draw with Sydney.

The match started in perfect conditions, sunny and warm with a light breeze in front of close to 1000 fans in Newcastle and it was the home side who had the first chance, with Gema Simon heading Emily Van Egmond's corner over the crossbar.

From that point on the half belonged to Canberra as Ashleigh Sykes provided the main threat on the left side.

She had two great chances on goal but Newcastle custodian Eliza Campbell did well to save a low shot at the near post before denying Sykes's sliding shot with her outstretched leg just before half-time.

The home side came out with more purpose in the second half. Van Egmond moved back into the midfield, allowing Hannah Brewer and Michaela Hatzirodos, who had replaced Tara Andrews at the break, to get in behind the Canberra defence.

But Canberra goalkeeper MacKenzie Arnold was up to the task and saved shots from Hatzirodos and Newcastle's American import Tori Huster.

Just as it looked like the Jets may open the scoring it was Canberra who struck first.

Michelle Heyman, who had been kept under wraps by Hayley Crawford and Stacey Day, slid a ball wide for Hayley Ruso and she did well to chip over the advancing Campbell and into the far corner of the net to make it 1-0 after 74 minutes.

As the Jets stretched forward in search of an equaliser they left themselves open at the back and Canberra took full advantage.

Ariane Hingst pushed a lovely ball through for Heyman inside the box and she buried the shot from right in front of goal to make it 2-0 after 84 minutes.

The visitors got their third in the 86th minute when Raso was brought down on the edge of the area by Jets substitute Sammara Schmitzer. Hingst sent her curling free-kick towards the far post where it took a deflection off the wall and skimmed under Campbell into the net.

Canberra made it 4-0 just one minute later when Heyman lobbed the Jets defence on the halfway line. Caitlin Munoz was first to the ball and went one-on-one with Campbell squeezing a shot under the Jets keeper.

Canberra completed the rout deep into injury time with a deserved goal to the hard-working Ashleigh Sykes who was on the spot to poke home from point-blank range after the Jets defence had failed to clear the ball.

Sky Blues on top in tense derby
DateOctober 28, 2012
Daniel Lane

CALL it the first shot fired in what should, in time, become a gritty grudge match between Sydney's two women's football teams.

Sydney FC's Kyah Simon and her Western Sydney foe Trudy Camilleri were chastised by referee Peta McCallum for some argy-bargy midway through the first half and the few hundred strong crowd, which included Football Australia boss Frank Lowy among their number, lapped up the theatre.

Simon, who starred for Boston in the professional American women's league, made it clear the match had plenty of grunt and feeling - but she would not elaborate on what happened between her and Camilleri in the lead up to the penalty.

''Which one? There were a few,'' she said of the free kick. ''I guess it was push and shove but what happens on the field stays on the field … that's football, it is a physical game.''

And there was a rivalry brewing with each push and shove. The Wanderers' Linda O'Neill was yellow-carded, while there was enough action to keep referee McCallum busy.

''You could feel the rivalry out on the pitch,'' Simon told The Sun-Herald. ''Every local derby is a tough game; each team always brings their best game to the plate.

''It was great to get a taste of the derby, I enjoyed it.''

Granted, the atmosphere at Leichhardt Oval didn't have quite the fire and brimstone of last weekend's inaugural derby between the men's teams at Parramatta Stadium - a dummy decked out in a Sydney FC shirt and dangling from a noose outside a pub summed it up - but the crowd witnessed a willing enough match.

Sydney FC had greater cohesion than the W-League's newcomers in the opening half, but for most raids deep in the Wanderers territory there was a foot stuck out, or a desperate flurry that saved the day.

Simon, Sydney FC's skipper, was among the best as she injected herself into the action with aggressive and purposeful bursts of energy that set up opportunities for her peers, although she didn't lack support in a decent team effort.

Handed her team's captaincy when Danielle Brogan injured her knee during the pre-season, Simon was a driving force calling the shots, taking shots and showing the crowd why she was one of the hot shots in the US.

But it was Emma Kete - one of three New Zealand internationals in the Sky Blue squad - who announced her arrival in the W-League when she scored her first goal of the season and opened her new team's account in the 28th minute.

The grudge match continued to build; there was a penalty for a push, a spirited challenge for a high ball between Nicola Bolger and the Wanderers Jenna Kingsley, which ended with the player in red and black on the ground for several minutes injured while both sides continued to fight for the ball. O'Neill was yellow-carded.

One of the real stars for Sydney FC was the cucumber-cool goalie Sian McLaren who, in one testing minute, foiled two attempts.

She needed to again call upon her reflexes and composure early in the second half when the Wanderers had their third crack.

James Willoughby Victory women go down to Roar

Saturday, 27 October 2012 6:14 PM

A superb Vedrana Popovic free-kick fired the Brisbane Roar to a 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory in the Westfield W-League at the Veneto Club on Saturday.

Victory were unlucky not to get an equaliser in a second half they dominated as they lost at home for the first time since the 2010/11 season.

Both sides made a cagey start with Brisbane's Tameka Butt fashioning the first chance of the game after 15 minutes, but her effort from the left sailed just over the bar.

The Roar continued to create and they took the lead just three minutes later thanks to some individual brilliance from Popovic.

Her free-kick from the left floated past Victory goalkeeper Brianna Davey and into the top right corner from 20 yards to give Brisbane the early advantage.

Amy Chapman had two opportunities to double the Roar's lead shortly after and while Victory were not poor, they were failing to convert their possession into chances unlike their opponents.

It took 40 minutes for Mike Mulvey's side to go close, with captain Louisa Bisby sending a terrific 25-yard effort fizzing past the post.

Amy Jackson had a left-foot shot go just wide only moments after but the Victory did get a reprieve when Brisbane captain Clare Polkinghorne – who was sent through on goal – failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity when she shot straight at Davey on the stroke of half-time.

Victory had a golden chance to equalise nine minutes into the second half but American striker Jessica McDonald had to watch in agony as her shot grazed the post.

The move – set up by Stephanie Catley – was Victory's best and although Brisbane substitute Emily Gielnik fired wide just moments after, Melbourne were on top.

The impressive Catley hit a cracking left-foot effort from 25 yards that flew just over the top on 63 minutes and she had another strike 12 minutes later but could only shoot straight at Hoshimi Kishi.

Matilda Ashley Brown was stretchered off with 10 minutes to go but it did not stop Victory's momentum as Jackson, Enza Barilla and Catley all went close again.

Brisbane also conjured a pair of late chances but neither Chapman nor substitute Sachiko Tatsuoka could convert.

It mattered little though as Brisbane condemned Victory to their second successive defeat.

For those of you who haven't already heard, Bisby and Brown both did their ACLs on Saturday, so that's the end of their seasons. And apparently someone else may have done theirs? Don't know any more than that. This is a really high number of ACLs, hopefully something more gets done to prevent them.

Returning Matildas combine to help Perth power to some Glory at last

From: The Australian October 29, 2012 12:00AM

STRUGGLERS last season, Perth Glory are the only W-League team with a perfect record after two rounds.

Boosted by the return this season of hometown Matildas duo Kate Gill and Collette McCallum, the Glory made it two from two as it edged past Adelaide United 2-1 on Saturday night thanks to a late winner from Elisa D'Ovidio.

But the Glory will be looking nervously over its shoulder after the W-League's heavyweight trio of Canberra United, Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar -- who have collectively won the four previous editions of the competition -- all secured their first wins of the season in round two.

Gill and McCallum were prominent in a deserved win for the Glory, Gill equalising moments before halftime to cancel out Ann Mayo's opener, while skipper McCallum controversially had a goal chalked off for offside following a stunning run. A flurry of late action allowed Canberra to rout Newcastle Jets 5-0 away from home on Saturday, as the reigning champions rediscovered some of the rampaging form that carried them through last season undefeated.

...Remarkably, the match in Newcastle was deadlocked until the 74th minute when Hayley Raso broke through and a rampant Canberra scored a further four goals in the final 10 minutes.

Two-time champions Brisbane had a much harder task in Melbourne, edging a 1-0 win over the Victory on the artificial surface at Bulleen.

A perfectly placed free-kick from Vedrana Popovic midway through the first half proved the difference, with the Victory's debutant American import Jessica McDonald hitting the post in the second half.

Melbourne, now managed by former long-serving Queensland women's coach Mike Mulvey, slipped to bottom on goal difference after a second successive defeat.

There was further bad news for the Victory with young gun Ashley Brown, who recently starred for the Matildas on their tour of the US, suffering a suspected torn knee ligament.

She joins 10 other national team members on the sidelines battling to overcome long-term injuries.

Meanwhile, in the competition's maiden city derby, Sydney FC was made to work hard before securing a 1-0 win against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

The Sky Blues' New Zealand international striker, Emma Kete, hit an impressive first-half goal to give her side bragging rights against a team with many former Sydney FC players.

W-League: Brown and Bisby to miss season

Monday, 29 October 2012 12:59 PM

Melbourne Victory Women’s season took a blow during Saturday’s match against Brisbane Roar when veteran Louisa Bisby and W-League Young Player of the Year Ashley Brown both sustained long-term knee injuries.

It has been confirmed that both players have suffered season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Head Coach Mike Mulvey said that while it is a disappointing setback, the team is still on track for a positive season.

“It’s very sad to lose them and they will be sorely missed for the rest of the season,” he said.

“We’re very sorry that it’s happened. I’ve spoken to the girls and we have a plan in place where they will go and see the surgeon, get the operation done and start the rehabilitation.

“Louisa and Ashley will be given our full support to get back to playing football and make a full recovery.”

Mulvey confirmed that he will be looking to bring additional players into the squad to cover the injuries.

“We’ll be looking to make some replacements. That’s two key players out of the squad so we need to make some changes and we’ll be looking into that,” he said.

“It’s just another obstacle that we have to overcome, and we will.”

Victory’s next home game is on 3 November against Newcastle Jets Women at Simonds Stadium in Geelong, with kick-off at 2:00pm.

Jets look to youth for success

Wednesday, 31 October 2012 1:48 PM

With an emphasis on youth in the 2012/13 Westfield W-League season, never has the importance of identifying, developing and keeping new talent in the game been better illustrated. And we need only look to teams like the Newcastle Jets to see how.

In a season when seven members of last year's Westfield Matildas World Cup squad are set to miss the entire campaign through injury or pregnancy, young players are getting a chance to step up and shine.

In fact, we're already seeing it.

Just take a look at some of the stars of an action-packed opening weekend - Sydney FC's Sam Kerr and Alanna Kennedy, Newcastle Jets' Emily van Egmond and Tara Andrews and Perth Glory's Marianna Tabain. All were goal scorers for their teams and all are still teenagers.

It's exciting to see and something that needs to continue to ensure a healthy future for the Westfield W-League and women's football in Australia.

The potential is certainly there - according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics there were more than 82,000 girls aged between five and 14 playing the sport in 2009. That number will only continue to increase as the Westfield W-League generates more and more exposure for the game, but the key is ensuring those players stay in the game and are not lost to other sports.

One of the best ways to do this is to ensure there are clear pathways for aspiring young players and the Newcastle Jets have taken an exciting lead in this area.

The Jets have teamed up with Northern New South Wales Football and Football Federation Australia to create the Emerging Jets program, and allow ongoing coaching, sports science and guidance for young players. The program is designed to provide a pathway for players as young as 10 to make their way through to the Westfield W-League and Hyundai A-League. It's a great initiative and one all Australian clubs need to follow.

The biggest teams in the world - think the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and even big-spending Manchester City - have built their success on strong youth setups. If young players are given opportunities and the best environment to develop their skills, clubs and leagues become stronger in the long run.

Not only will it greatly benefit the Westfield Matildas on the world stage but it will also ensure the exciting play we're seeing from young players in the Westfield W-League at the moment is just a taste of what's to come.

Jets stung by familiar faces

Wednesday, 31 October 2012 5:10 PM

Canberra United's 5-0 thumping of Newcastle Jets on Saturday sent a clear message to the Westfield W-League field, but it wasn't the simplest day out for the visitors. After 74 minutes without scoring, two ex-Newcastle players pulled out stunning displays to overcome their former club.

Aside from the massive scoreline, coach Jitka Klimkova will surely be pleased that her team has kept another clean sheet and extended its unbeaten run, which stretches back to last season.

And supporters will be thankful that one of their goal-scorers made the move south this season, with former Newcastle Jets talisman Ariane Hingst grabbing the visitors' third goal of the match. The German international had previously been with the Jets since 2011 before signing with Canberra United in September this year.

Not one to single out players, Klimkova made special mention of another ex-Newcastle player in the form of Samantha Wood, praising her as the spark that turned the game in Canberra's favour. After being introduced in the 73rd minute, with the score still deadlocked at 0-0, Wood helped set up the first goal with her first touch and had a wonderful game as her side stormed to a massive victory.

That seemingly brilliant substitution and subsequent goal from Hayley Raso seemed to ignite Canberra's desire for more, and Newcastle simply capitulated. An incredible 10-minute spell saw another four goals hit the back of the Jets' net as the girls in green dominated.

After their scoreless draw against Brisbane Roar last weekend, Canberra United could have been forgiven for relying on two-time golden boot-winner Michelle Heyman to grab the points. And while the prolific striker did manage to get her name on the scoresheet with her team's second goal, the reigning champions ended up smashing in five goals from five different players.

It would be foolish to say Canberra United is in the box seat for back-to-back titles this early in the season, especially with Perth Glory currently topping the Westfield W-League table with two victories at home so far. But it's clear the defending champions have more than enough talent in their squad to score plenty of goals without relying solely on Heyman.

For the ex-Newcastle players, it was a happy homecoming. But the Jets will certainly be keen for revenge when they head to the capital in round eight.

Canberra united behind Klimkova coaching Matildas

November 1, 2012
Fleta Page

Outgoing Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has backed Canberra United's Jitka Klimkova as a candidate to take over the Australian women's soccer team, saying she ticks all the boxes for the national coaching role.

Sermanni resigned yesterday as Australian coach after eight years to take charge of the United States, the world's No.1 team.

The departing coach endorsed 38-year-old Klimkova, after the Czech guided Canberra United to last year's W-League title and still remains undefeated in the domestic competition.

''She's come over here and has a terrific track record,'' Sermanni said.

''I think somebody who's coached in the W-League, and coached successfully in the W-League, has certainly got credentials to be considered for the job.

''She's still got an impeccable record, she's done very well with the team and she's generated a great team spirit on and off the field, so if you tick all those boxes … she'd certainly be of interest.''

Klimkova, the reigning W-League coach of the year, yesterday signalled her intention to apply for the Matildas position. ''I'm really focussed, and will be during this season, on Canberra United, but honestly, I will be open to it,'' Klimkova said.

''If the job will be open for the coaches, I will apply for it, I will go for it, but we have a game against Adelaide and I will be focused on this game during the weekend.''

Women's football commentators have all thrown Klimkova's name on the shortlist of top candidates, noting her impressive qualifications as well as W-League success, including a UEFA Pro Licence, the top European football coaching qualification.

United chief executive Heather Reid, who recruited the former Czech national under-19s mentor to Australia after a chance meeting last year, said she would encourage her coach to apply for the Matildas job.

''Absolutely, it would be a dream come true,'' Reid said.

''You'd have to say that Jitka would be a firm favourite, given that she understands the environment, she's been working here, and knows many of the players and has shown true professionalism and leadership.''

If Klimkova was to get the job, it would likely mean handing the reins over at United.

''I don't think FFA [Football Federation Australia] would allow [her to coach both], but also I think FFA would accept that she's got this job until the end of January and that doesn't need to be interrupted,'' Reid said. ''By the time they go through the appointment process, the recruitment process, the interviews and everything like that, it's going to be probably December anyway before they've got a decision.'' Klimkova isn't the only Canberra United coach to be touted for the top job. Canberra's inaugural W-League coach, Robbie Hooker, also possesses a strong resume, although Sermanni predicted the now-Socceroos assistant would not apply.

''He's now had a significant background in women's football, he's a very popular coach, he's a good operator,'' Sermanni said of his former Matildas assistant. ''Obviously he's in the position he's got with the Socceroos, so … I'm not sure at this stage of his career, that's something that he would look at.''

Melbourne Victory take their home match to Geelong where they will desperately be looking for a change in fortunes.

Last season’s semi-finalists have endured two narrow losses, with the Victory hit by a devastating dual blow last weekend as Matildas young gun Ash Brown and skipper Louisa Bisby both suffered season-ending knee injuries.

One bright spot from last Saturday’s 1-0 loss against Brisbane Roar was the debut of tall American striker Jessica McDonald, while further experience will be provided with next week’s arrival of midfielder Petra Larsson from Swedish big guns Linkopings.

Newcastle Jets land in Geelong on the back of two very different outings thus far. Their opening encounter producing a highly-credible 3-3 draw against Sydney FC, however the Jets then crashed 5-0 against champions Canberra United on home turf.

Coach Wayne O’Sullivan will be concerned by his team’s second-half showings which saw them concede twice against the Sky Blues, and then ship five goals in a remarkable final quarter-hour against United.

Saturday 3 November 2012
Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney
Local kick-off: 2pm

Western Sydney Wanderers have experienced an intriguing first few weeks of their Westfield W-League life. The Wanderers firstly spurned a golden opportunity for three points by allowing Adelaide United to secure an eleventh-hour 4-3 comeback win.

Last week, they again provided good value before succumbing to a one goal defeat against local rivals Sydney FC. The inaugural Westfield W-League city derby came at a major cost for the Wanderers who lost hard-working striker Jenna Kingsley to a serious knee injury.

Perth Glory, conversely, are sitting proudly atop the standings with a perfect record after two rounds, having already claimed as many wins as they did throughout last season’s entire campaign.

And the news just keeps getting better for Jamie Harnwell’s charges with Lisa De Vanna confirmed to arrive in round four, taking the Glory’s current Matildas contingent to four.

Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC
Saturday 3 November 2012
Cleveland Showgrounds, Brisbane
Local kick-off: 3pm

One of the traditional highlights of the Westfield W-League season takes place as Brisbane Roar host Sydney FC.

As usual the form book goes out the window when these two pair up, in what will be the first meeting since a tempestuous semi-final last season that resulted in the dismissal of Sky Blues striker Kyah Simon and coach Alen Stajcic.

Unusually neither of these two teams have a grasp on top spot and, although the pair are both on four points, it is Brisbane that have perhaps made the better start.

The Roar secured a goalless draw at champions Canberra, before a hard-fought 1-0 win on the road in Melbourne last weekend. Under new coach Belinda Wilson, Brisbane appear ready to start building momentum, and victory over their traditional rivals would provide massive impetus.

Sydney, for their part, have had somewhat disjointed start to the season, impressing at times in drawing 3-3 against Newcastle, before a hard-working 1-0 win over the Wanderers. However, a team with so much x-factor can never be discounted, while the form of young midfielder Alanna Kennedy has been a revelation.

Brisbane Roar squad: 1. Hoshimi KISHI (gk), 2. Laura Alleway, 3. Amy CHAPMAN, 4. Clare POLKINGHORNE, 5. Brooke SPENCE, 6. Ashley Spina, 7. Erika ELZE, 9. Emma PITTMAN, 10. Lana HARCH, 11. Ins: Emma PITTMAN, Georgia CHAPMAN (both promoted)
Outs: Hannah BEARD (neck – 1 week),
Unavailable: Elise KELLOND-KINGHT (knee - 1 week), Rebecca PRICE (knee - 1 week),

Sydney FC squad: 1. Sian MCCLAREN, 2. Teresa POLIAS, 3. Elizabeth RALSTON, 4. Sam KERR, 5. Meg McLAUGHLIN, 7. Nicola BOLGER, 8. Amy HARRISON, 9. Caitlin FOORD, 10. Renee ROLLASON, 11. Canberra United v Adelaide United
Saturday 3 November 2012
McKellar Park, Canberra
Local kick-off: 4pm

This match would have seemed three certain points for Canberra United this time last season, but Adelaide are a very different prospect this term.

Nevertheless, Canberra returned to ominous form last weekend with a remarkable 5-0 win in Newcastle. Five different goalscorers evidence of United’s strength across the park. Coach Jitka Klimkova is hopeful that Sally Shipard will be available after injury, meaning United have a full squad to choose from.

It is a different scenario for counterpart Dave Edmondson who must make do without the services of key attackers Marijana Rajcic and Sarah McLaughlin. A last-gasp 2-1 defeat in Perth was a harsh experience for the youthful Lady Reds, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier with a trip to the nation’s capital and a meeting with the reigning champions.

Canberra United squad: 1. Mackenzie ARNOLD (gk), 2. Caitlin COOPER, 3. Georgia YEOMAN-DALE, 4. Christine WALTERS, 5. Grace FIELD, 6. Caitlin MUNOZ, 7. Ellie BRUSH, 8. Hayley RASO, 9. Grace GILL, 10. Jets face huge test without playmaker
By CRAIG KERRY Nov. 2, 2012, 7:43 p.m.

.THE Newcastle Jets face a test of their mental strength when they take on Melbourne Victory today at Simonds Stadium without their best player and fresh from a 5-0 flogging against W-League champions Canberra.

Newcastle travelled to Geelong yesterday afternoon without their key midfielder and only current international, Emily van Egmond, after she failed a fitness test.
Van Egmond injured her foot in the heavy loss to her former team on Saturday at Wanderers Oval and did not complete training on Tuesday night.
She was given Wednesday night off but was still struggling with the impact injury on Thursday.
"She's got a foot problem and we're not quite sure what it is at the moment, but it's causing her a bit of pain," Jets co-coach Peter McGuinness said.
"It was just a knock. She's had X-rays and there's no fractures or anything, but the pain hasn't subsided enough for us to take her.
"It's a big loss, there's no hiding that. She's looked dangerous in both games, scored a goal and set up others."
The loss has been offset by the return of impressive American import Angela Salem, who missed the defeat to Canberra with a thigh injury.
Salem played as a holding midfielder in the 3-all draw with Sydney in round one the week before.
Hannah Brewer moved from right back to holding midfield last week and keeps that position in light of van Egmond's injury.
McGuinness was confident Salem would do the job taking over van Egmond's playmaking role.
"Angela is a very good player with a very good passing range and likes to get forward without the ball," he said.
Defenders Gema Simon (hamstring), Gemma Pearce (shin splints) and Stacey Day (ankle) have been restricted to light duties this week after the torrid tussle with Canberra, which was scoreless until the 74th minute.
The physical battering, however, is likely to be secondary to the mental scars the players could carry from the opening two games.
Newcastle led Sydney by two goals twice before hanging on for a point and matched it with Canberra last week before the late capitulation.
But McGuinness said the players had been upbeat at training this week and were ready to bounce back against the Victory, who lost their opening matches of the season.
"Those games can play with your mind, because you're in it, you're doing quite well and you end up conceding five goals," he said.
"You think, 'What the hell is going on there,' but I think we got everything in one fell swoop - bad luck, bad decisions, mistakes.
"We're a better side than that. Canberra are not a five-goal better side than us.
"This is a great opportunity to go down there, play well and get our season back on track."
The match starts at 2pm.
In other games today, Wanderers play Perth at Campbelltown Stadium, Brisbane take on Sydney FC at Cleveland Showgrounds and Canberra host Adelaide.

Shipard on the lip of return

November 3, 2012
Fleta Page

A moustache-bearing Sally Shipard is set to return to the Canberra United line-up to play her first match in more than five months on Saturday following off-season knee surgery.

The 25-year-old, who is raising money for ''Movember'', trained with her teammates for the first time on Monday and passed a fitness test on Wednesday night to confirm she was available to make her return.

Coach Jitka Klimkova was expected to name Shipard on Friday night in the team of 15 to take on Adelaide United at McKellar on Saturday.

''She had a pretty hard training and she looks ready to go,'' Klimkova said, adding she was likely to use her star midfielder as a substitute in her first game back.

''We have to be really careful - it would be her first game after a long, long time, after a lot of months, so I think more smarter will be that she'll play just a few minutes during that first game.

''We will be smart and keep putting her on the field step by step.''

Shipard is ''beside herself'' with excitement at the prospect of returning to the field, having already delayed her return by two weeks after her rehabilitation took longer than hoped.

''I feel like a little kid,'' she said.

Her last game was on May 31 with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga.

''The break, to be honest, was very well received, [but I'm] very much raring to go now.''

Fans should have no trouble spotting the midfielder, who will be sporting a different moustache for each day of Movember.

It's the second year she has been supporting the month-long campaign to raise awareness and money for men's health.

While men are encouraged to grow their moustache for the month of November, Shipard's take is to have someone draw on a different moustache each day.

It's an often ''awkward'' campaign as she goes about her day-to-day business, with Shipard last year discovering the advantages of some moustache designs over others.

''I like the really thick ones - the skinny ones are a little too dainty for me and sometimes unrecognisable,'' she said.

''Last year I had … this really sharp, pointy moustache which sort of drew from my nostrils and then straight up almost to my eyeballs, so I had like two ticks on my face.

''I attended a function all day and no one at my table brought it up, and I had to leave a bit earlier and the only reason they didn't bring it up was because they thought it was a tattoo.

''A face tattoo, oh my gosh, I still get embarrassed thinking about it.''

It only took a few hours following her first moustache this Movember, for some more awkward moments to arise.

Shipard's mo was mistaken for a birthmark by a shop assistant and the disguise of a ''dodgy character'' by an Australian Federal Police officer.

Shipard is encouraging people to join her in Movember by wearing their own moustache at today's game as she aims to raise $10,000 for men's health.

Lady Reds face tough ask in Canberra

Friday, 2 November 2012 4:10 PM

Adelaide United faces no tougher task in a bid to return to the winner’s list when the Lady Reds meet champion Canberra United at McKellar Park on Saturday.

The Lady Reds were defeated 2-1 by Perth Glory last week after taking the lead minutes before the break, only to concede the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

The Glory went on to score the winner in the 88th minute and Adelaide United coach Dave Edmondson admitted the hosts were deserved of all three points and even a chance for the title.

“The result a bit disappointing but our performance probably didn’t warrant a point really,” he said.

“In terms of the goals, it is disappointing to concede at anytime but particularly the first goal. It was literally seconds before half time. If we had gone in 1-0 up at half time, it could have made things very different.”

“I really think Glory will be a top four side this season and they have a chance at the title. They have recruited very well with their goalkeeper Carly Telford and the four or five of Matildas they have in their squad.”

Canberra United enjoyed an emphatic 5-0 win over Newcastle Jets last week after sharing the points in a goalless draw with Brisbane Roar in the opening round of the season.

Canberra look to be at full strength while a couple of notable absentees from the Lady Reds line-up makes the trip to the nation’s capital even tougher.

Jess Waterhouse has been selected for Australia U16 duties while hat-trick hero Sara McLaughlin is still sidelined with an ankle injury.

Marijana Racjic and Laura Johns are also not part of the travelling party.

Edmondson conceded the prospect of facing a full-strength Canberra side is an enormous task.

“Especially with the players we have missing, the trip to Canberra is probably the most difficult we will face this season,” he said.

“But, we have worked on a few different things this week specifically for Canberra and we are going there to give a good account of ourselves.”

W-League: Wanderers shock

3 November 2012

A brace from midfielder Trudy Camilleri delivered bottom-of-the-table Western Sydney Wanderers a shock 2-0 win over W-League leader Perth Glory at Campbelltown Stadium.

Camilleri struck either side of half-time to seal the club's first league victory and condemn Glory to its first defeat of the campaign.

The Wanderers looked the most energetic team in the first half and their perseverance eventually paid off in the 43rd minute with the opening goal.

Teigen Allen provided a lovely pass for Camilleri to go one-on-one with keeper Carly Telford and slot her shot home with a sharp, side-footed finish.

Western Sydney coach Steve Roche knew one goal was not going to be enough and sent Linda O'Neill on after 54 minutes to freshen up his attack.

The move paid dividends when O'Neill laid on Camilleri's second goal with a surging run into the box.

She made her way to the byline and pulled the ball back for the No 14 to slam the ball past Telford.

W-League: Sydney comeback
3 November 2012-SBS/FFA

Resurgent Sydney FC staged a second-half comeback to beat Brisbane Roar 3-1 in a W-League clash at Cleveland Showgrounds.

After Brisbane took the lead against the run of play just before the interval, Sydney scored three goals in 17 minutes in the second half to take all three points.

With attacking duo Tameka Butt and Hannah Beard missing through injury, Roar's Emily Gielnik and Sachiko Tatsuoka regained their starting spots from the season opener against Canberra United.

The only change for the Sky Blues was in the inclusion of Ellyse Perry, who missed last week's Sydney derby due to cricket commitments, with Larissa Crummer the player forced to a bench spot.

The away side dominated the early proceedings and Perry's third minute free-kick caused a nervous moment for Roar custodian Hoshimi Kishi as the ball swerved high of the woodwork in the windy conditions.

The Japanese shot-stopper denied Sydney another chance to open the scoring on the 20-minute mark, tipping a long-range effort from Nicola Bolger onto the crossbar and away to safety.

For all their opportunities, including several off-target chances from playmaker Kyah Simon and their overwhelming midfield possession, the Sky Blues lacked the killer instinct.

The misses proved costly in the 42nd minute when Lana Harch opened the scoring for Brisbane with her side's first shot on target all half.

A deft flick from Tatsuoka allowed Clare Polkinghorne to drive the ball towards goal and it was the Roar captain's pass, deflected by an opposing defender, that set up Harch for her clinical right-footed strike from inside the area.

Within sixty seconds of the second half, Sydney had its equaliser when Sam Kerr capitalised on some unsteady Roar defending and 12 minutes later it took the lead through New Zealand international Emma Kete.

Perry made it 3-1 to the visitor just after the hour mark with a pinpoint free-kick from 25 metres out.

W-League: Victory success

3 November 2012-SBS/FFA

Melbourne Victory picked up its first points of the season by edging out Newcastle Jets 1-0 in an entertaining W-League clash at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.

Victory defender Rebekah Stott scored the game's only goal seconds before half-time after a goalmouth scramble.

Most of Victory's attacks came down the left-hand side through Stephanie Catley and it was fitting that she was involved in the goal.

After Amy Jackson was fouled in a central position, Catley delivered a flighted cross into the mass of bodies in the penalty area and Stott managed to divert it into the net.

The goal was a blow to the Jets as they entered the dressing-rooms but a just reward for Victory with all its relentless attacking late in the half.

The Jets' hopes of a comeback were severely reduced late in the game when Stacey Day received her marching orders for two fouls in quick succession.

Westfield W-League 2012/13 Round 3 Review

Saturday, 3 November 2012 11:27 PM

Champions Canberra United and Sydney FC stormed to the top of the Westfield W-League thanks to impressive comeback wins, with Perth Glory knocked off the summit after losing their unbeaten record.

Canberra United have a slim hold on top spot thanks to a superior goal difference although they were in danger of losing their lengthy unbeaten record against a brave Adelaide.

The Lady Reds were 1-0 up until midway through the second half thanks to Racheal Quigley’s effort, only for United to finish strongly and end Adelaide’s hopes of a famous win.

Caitlin Cooper finally broke Adelaide’s resistance with captain Ellie Brush and substitute Sam Wood completing a 12-minute three-goal burst.

Sydney FC’s visit to rivals Brisbane Roar produced a carbon copy scenario as the Sky Blues came from a goal down to win by the same score line.

Brisbane Roar struggled in attack without the injured Tameka Butt but, nevertheless took the lead against the run of play through Lana Harch.

However, the visitors struck back strongly with Sam Kerr, Emma Kete and Ellyse Perry all hitting the net as the Sky Blues took a two-goal lead just past the hour mark.

At the other end of the table, Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers ground out deserved wins over Newcastle Jets and Perth Glory respectively.

The Victory overcame a tough start to the season to claim their maiden win, with Rebekah Stott the unlikely goal scorer just prior to the half-time whistle.

The visiting Jets were hamstrung on their trip to Geelong with key midfielder Emily van Egmond missing with injury and defender Stacey Day sent off in the latter stages.

In was a historic day for Western Sydney Wanderers who claimed their first-ever Westfield W-League win with a 2-0 score line against the previously unbeaten Glory.

Player of the match Trudy Camilleri scored in each half as the Wanderers were deserving victors over the last remaining team with a perfect record.

Edwina Lawry Perry shines a light on women's football

Monday, 5 November 2012 1:45 PM

With the exception of a select few like Sam Stosur, Steph Gilmore and Sally Pearson, there's a noticeable dearth of household names in Australian women's sport.

Which is not to say there's a lack of talent. In women's football, the Westfield Matildas are currently ranked ninth in the world, and the Westfield W-League is filled with players who've excelled in the world's leading competitions like the WSL and Bundesliga. But while most Australians with a passing interest in sport could name numerous men's players, members of the Westfield Matildas and cricket's Southern Stars (ranked second in the world) don't leap quite so readily to mind.

Enter Ellyse Perry.

The dual international has spent the past five years juggling football and cricket commitments for club and country (as well as a university degree), becoming a promotional lightning rod for both sports in the process. Standout performances on domestic and international stages have done much to raise the profile of women's football in Australia. And the impact of this publicity can't be overstated.

Despite financial discrepancies, Perth Glory's Aivi Luik agrees that the key to the development of women's football is coverage. "We could be number one [in the world] eventually, yeah. Obviously money would help but it's more about exposure and keeping the game in the school system."

Eyebrows were raised in May this year when Canberra United informed Perry that she would have to commit herself solely to football if she wished to remain with the premiership-winning club. But Canberra's loss has been Sydney FC's gain. After playing for the NSW Breakers on the Friday and Saturday, Perry backed up for Sydney FC's round one clash with Newcastle Jets on the Sunday. Her two goal-assists were crucial in helping the Sky Blues claim a 3-3 draw.

Her versatility highlights the double-edged nature of women's sport. To achieve and maintain such a high level in two vastly different sports simultaneously would be unimaginable in the men's games due to much longer seasons.

But to reduce Perry to a mere beneficiary of scheduling is to do her a disservice. If similar dual internationals started popping up everywhere, one might begin to question the depth of our female sporting talent. But as it is, she remains one of a kind and thoroughly deserving of the plaudits. A sentiment shared by her new club.

"She's a really committed person and hats off to her level of commitment," says Sydney FC coach Alen Stajcic. "To have that level of enthusiasm from a player is really great."

Until the standard of her performances in either sport are compromised by the juggling act, her commitment to both should only be applauded.

Perry returned to the field for Sydney FC against archrivals Brisbane Roar on Saturday, scoring one of three goals in an impressive showing.

Simon Jones Star performer of the week: Trudy Camilleri

Tuesday, 6 November 2012 1:02 PM

With Western Sydney Wanderers FC's shock win over league leaders Perth Glory on Saturday, it's no surprise that one of the weekend's standout performers grabbed both goals in that match.

21-year-old Trudy Camilleri had a sensational game, which saw the Wanderers pick up their first win and first points of the season. Facing tough opposition in a Perth Glory outfit who were looking to continue their winning streak, it was Camilleri who struck in both halves to drag the Wanderers off the bottom of the Westfield W-League table.

The western Sydney local, who was born in Liverpool, said after the match that the league's newcomers were keen to overcome some early teething problems.

"Our progression through the week has been better than the last two weeks," said Camilleri. "We're learning from our mistakes each week and come the warm-up today it was just [about] focus."

After previously plying her trade with the Central Coast Mariners, Camilleri spent several years away from the Westfield W-League before the opportunity to join Western Sydney Wanderers FC arose. The midfielder is ecstatic to be playing in Australia's premier women's football competition again, and the fact that the club is based in Sydney's west is ideal.

"I've been waiting for this for ages. I was going to do anything in my power to go anywhere that I could because I just wanted to play in the W-League again, but being that there's a Western Sydney Wanderers team in, it's the best thing ever. I love it."

Camilleri was quick to praise coach Steve Roche for giving her the chance to once again prove herself in the Westfield W-League. Having previously played under Roche at the Mariners back in 2008/09, Camilleri says it's his continued faith in her that has given her the drive to shine in a Wanderers jersey.

"Rochey came and selected me for the Mariners, so he's given me a chance. And for him to give me another chance this year, I owe a lot to him to give me a chance to shine and show that I've got more than just Premier League [top tier of women's football in NSW] in me."

After a relatively lacklustre start to their season, Trudy Camilleri has given Western Sydney Wanderers FC the confidence to continue their run against league leaders Canberra United this weekend. Taking on the reigning champions will be no simple task, but if Camilleri and her teammates can show the same determination that saw them overcome Perth Glory, they could well be sitting comfortably within the top half of the table by next week.

Canberra United stars rise to tackle new rivals
DateNovember 8, 2012 Read laterFleta Page

Michelle Heyman and Caitlin Cooper will take on the team they turned down when Canberra United play the Western Sydney Wanderers in Campbelltown on Sunday, with bragging rights on the line as well as the three points.

When the Wanderers joined the W-League earlier this year, inaugural coach Steve Roche had the two key players on his radar to poach from the defending champions.

Both had played under him at the Central Coast Mariners before the side folded. Cooper captained the side for two seasons and Heyman won W-League player of the year and the Golden Boot in her season with the club.

Understandably, Roche was keen to convince them to return to his new side, offering bigger pay packets than United, as well as the promise of playing with friends.

But for Heyman, the decision to stay in Canberra was simple and one she is still happy she made.

''Most definitely, I'd never pick money over Canberra, I think it's like a family,'' Heyman said in her third season in the capital.

But Heyman's connection to the Wanderers players hasn't ceased, as the striker keeps in close contact with her friends, and an eye on how they are going in the side's first year in the league.

''All my best mates are in the team, so I talk to them after every one of their games to see how they're going and stuff, and they've been going pretty good,'' Heyman said.

Heyman wasn't at her athletic best last week against Adelaide. Her knee was heavily strapped following a collision with the Newcastle goalkeeper in their 5-0 win in round two.

''I did a grade one [tear] to my medial [ligament] and hyperextended my knee - the keeper came out and smashed me. I shouldn't have been playing [against Adelaide], I went and got cortisone injections to get the swelling down and stuff like that - it seemed fine, I took some painkillers,'' she said.

Having taken a week off work, and ''icing 24/7'', the striker is ready to take on her old mates.

While United remains undefeated and at the top of the W-League ladder, the Wanderers won their first game last weekend, a 2-0 defeat of Perth Glory when midfielder Trudy Camilleri scored both goals.

''She's been a stand-out player for them which is great to see,'' Heyman said of her former Mariners teammate.

''I think she might be one of the most dangerous players for us to look out for in this game.''

Heyman and Cooper were able to supply thorough reports on the players and the opposing coach before the game, but know the scouting goes both ways.

''We've got a lot on them, but they have the same on us as well, and I guess Rochey, the coach, he knows me and [Cooper] very well, so I think he will plan to not let us have the ball,'' Heyman said.

It's a situation Heyman has found herself in a lot this year, attracting plenty of extra attention after claiming her second Golden Boot last season.

''It's kind of getting a bit difficult, I've always got a couple of players on my back and then one always coming in front of me and it's kind of annoying, but then it's amazing because I'm taking out a couple of players,'' she said.

The result has been a big spread of goal-scorers, as United's eight goals have come from eight players, including two key defenders in Cooper and Ellie Brush last week.

Melbourne Victory Women will be boosted this weekend following the signing of two European players; Welsh Captain Jessica Fishlock and Swede Petra Larsson.

Better Communication for Westfield W-League Match Officials

Ben Wilson
Friday, 9 November 2012 3:34 PM

For the first time this weekend match officials in the Westfield W-League will use a communication system during the Round 4 match between Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar at Hindmarsh Stadium.

From Round 5, under a sponsorship arrangement with L & W Sports Communications, the equipment will be provided at all matches for the remainder of the W-League season.

The communication system has been used in the Hyundai A-League for the past five seasons and is an additional tool used by referees to make better decisions. The system will enable improved communication and information sharing between officials in the Westfield W-League.

While the use of communications equipment will be new to many officials on the Westfield W-League, FIFA Assistant Referee Allyson Flynn has experienced the benefits of ‘comms gear’ at FIFA tournaments, including the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Hyundai A-League.

As well as the opportunity to provide additional information to the referee, Allyson sees other benefits for the Westfield W-League officials using the equipment.

“The communication system enables the refereeing team to support and encourage each other throughout the match,” said Flynn.

Flynn also has some tips for her Westfield W-League colleagues who will be using the system for the first time.

“Keep it short, and as an assistant referee, choose your moment to speak carefully.”

The sponsorship of the Westfield W-League referees is also recognition from L & W Sports Communications of the need to promote equality of women’s sport and the importance of women’s football in Australia.

FFA’s Referees Department sees this as a fantastic development for officials in the Westfield W-League. It adds a level of professionalism and brings the Westfield W-League into line with the technology available to referees in the Hyundai A-League.
