Just realised that Panos Armenakas wears #10 for Udinese Primavera. Not bad for a foreign 17 year old in an under 21 comp! Hope he is a regular this season at that level.

Apparently he's a genuine prodigy. There were news articles being written about his footballing ability when he was five.

He is to me as Ikon is to you. Had a good feeling about him ever since I read an article in which Les Murray described him as the best junior player he's ever seen in Australia.

Both are good lads, focussed, loads of talent, have supportive and loving families, and have everything going for them to make it.

So (genuine question), what is the likelihood that he will want to play for Australia? Have we heard anything? Would hate for another Christian Vieri.

Sick of this stupid question. He says he wants to play for oz. Has played many times at youth for oz. If he wants to play for Greece best of luck. Fwiw Australia is a far more attractive prospect than Greece atm.

IIRC he's represented Australia, Greece and the U.S in youth international football (what a whore) but I'm pretty sure he said he's committing himself to Australia.

For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby

http://www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/sport/article/11005/australia-international-smith-on-trial-at-oakwell?

According to this article about Smith because Liverpool offered him a contract they are due a compensation fee even though he's a free agent. Might be why its taken a bit longer to find a club.

Also the Barnsley coach seems to have an issue with his size:

Quote:
Johnson told the Chronicle: "Brad has been on trial with us this week and will come back next week. He is a good player with a lot of pedigree and he's very quick, mobile and good on the ball. "If he was six foot two, I would be banging the door down to try to sign him. It's not one to go overboard on but it's certainly a player who we have enjoyed having in with us and we will continue to have a look at him.

Just watched the preview of the primavera game against Milan on YouTube they interviewed him, The reporter asked something about Australia in The u17's Armenakas replied (with my very average translation skills), that everything is going well with Australia and enjoys when he gets to play for the national side but from now on his sole focus is more important with Udinese, saying that yes he wants to continue to play well but is more focused that the squad as a whole performs well.

This is really rough translation Hope it is sort of close enough if there are any Full Italians on here...

but there was nothing in those 3 games Armenakas played with the Aussie 17 team at Nike International , that says Armenakas was anything special , or better then the other Aussie u 17 players playing

Highlights of the game. Amini should have had a pen in the first half

My understanding is that Panos Armenakas wants to play for Australia. He is playing for the Joeys. He has played for a Greece youth side. He's also eligible to play for the US, as he was born in Newport, CA. But, it seems, his loyalties are with Australia. Sounds like a nice bloke too.

I'd like to see footage of him playing for Australia U17s or for the Udinese Primavera side. By the sound of it, he has buckets of talent.

I'd also like to know about the trajectory of the Italian star players. Did they play in the Primavera? If so, until what sort of age? When did they make their Serie A debut?

It would be be good to be able to correlate the success of young Italian-based Australian players with other Italian-developed players?

Of critical importance, Aremenakas would seem to have an EU passport. This makes life far easier for him.

I reckon it would be unlikely he'd be in Europe now without one.

In fact, without one, even as an established A-League player, I reckon he'd battle to gain much ground in Europe.

Milligan doesn't have an EU passport. If he had, he'd have probably been in Europe ages ago. Instead he's now languishing in the Middle East and ruining his career.

Thanks for the translation! :)

From my reading, a lot of the Italian Serie A stars seem to have come through the Primavera team in the club they started out at, but maybe that's from a bygone era? Either way, with Lazio signing the Ikon to a long term (5 years?) senior deal based on Primavera form (shortly before his cappening) tells quite a story for faith paid in youth they develop. Can't say this is the case with every Aussie every time, of course, but Panos is no Stella.

Haha, multiple people saying the same things adds a bit more credibility :d

We'll see how these two go. I agree there are good signs with both these players. My worry is that Primavera to Serie A is rather a narrow pathway (although at least Italian football is of very high standard). By that I mean, with no reserves and a bloody long benches, it can leave players in limbo. That's why I'd like to know more about the trajectory of other players. I suspect a lot turns on when the player makes their debut. So going from the Primavera to Serie A is very feasible. But they mustn't wait too long to wait for their debut otherwise they're skating on thin ice. So a player like Keita, who is the same age as Ikonomidis, is already getting proper game time in the Serie A. Hopefully, the Ikon follows suit.

Agree 100% that Italy needs a reserve league, or an U23 league, or allow second teams in lower tiers like Germany does or some similar solution desperately. It creates a huge limbo between Primavera level and senior Serie A level that is not breached by riding poor souls on the oversized bench for years.

Keita is one of the great talents of his age group on a global level, but in fairness he has over 10cm height difference with Ikon, and that would definitely factor in to the likelihood of being selected against seniors.

Italy recently banned their co-ownership solution, so an alternative is surely on the way, with some clubs going for loans like we see with Brilliante.
