Do you. How about you go for it by yourself and we'll follow your lead when we decided to come back to another game once the antagonistic security firm have been withdrawn.

Seeing reports tonight that CQ coach Joe Fenech may have handed in his resignation. Word is a falling out with the board/committee. Will be a big loss for both the team and the region. Joe is an accomplished coach and despite their early results a good person for the long term success of CQ.

Hopefully sanity prevails and they can sort out their issues and get back to the job at hand.

Sorry mate can't agree 0 points from 5 games 7 goals for 36 against speaks for itself.Maybe too close to the selection pool candidates to make a rational judgment could also be committee interference whatever the case live or die by your results in NPL seniors.

Quote:
OUTGOING CQFC head coach and technical director Joe Fenech is adamant his shock resignation was not something he wanted, but something forced upon him.

After months of what Fenech labelled as poor communication, false promises and incompetence from specific members on the board, finally pushed the coach of the National Premier League side to hand in his resignation on Sunday.

Fenech said he could no longer work alongside CEO Tony Zanda or media manager Grant Stockwell, who both served on the CQFC board, and would only stay if they left.

Fenech said Zanda's vague response to his resignation was typical of the poor communication between the pair since he was appointed as head coach late last year.

"I emailed Tony Zanda my resignation on Sunday and I got a text from the CEO saying 'OK'. On Monday another board member emailed me asking me not to say anything to the media, as the board had not accepted my resignation," Fenech said.

Fenech respected the board's wishes but on Monday afternoon, he had a phone call from WIN Television questioning his decision to resign.

"The journalist at WIN TV said he had received an email from Tony Zanda saying I was resigning, and the board wished me well, but Tony still had not spoken to me about it. The next thing I knew I was sitting at home and it came on the news I had resigned," a devastated Fenech explained.

Fenech had been left in limbo, not sure whether the club wanted him to see out the four-week notice period or leave immediately.

"Nobody has told me anything."

Last month, a monthly board meeting was held, where Fenech said he lost his temper and told a few "home truths".

"Obviously my candidness did not sit well with them," Fenech said.

Since the club was established late last year, Fenech had been asking for basic essential gear for the top side.

He said he had been promised the gear time and again, but has seen very little of it.

The club still lacked a major sponsor from home ground Rugby Park which they share with Central Queensland Rugby Union.

Fenech said what sponsors the club did have, were gained through his work.

He said the added the burden of being the face of the club, and the person people went to, to question what was happening and where their gear was, had become too much.

As for his future plans, Fenech said he had none at this stage.

"It was my intention to be here for the next five years ... I was confident I was doing okay and the feedback I was getting was good. It's important that people don't think I've quit for any other reason apart from there are a few people on the board I cannot work with.

"My resignation had to happen to change things. I will be annoyed if when I go, the new coach gets everything I've been asking for ... and I know now the boys have a couple of weaker teams they will start winning - they are coming together well but I want them to win," he said.

"I resigned because it's about time Central Queensland united together to support the world game so we can have it in our backyard."

CQFC Energy:

CQFC Energy next plays Far North Queensland (FNQFC) on Saturday, at Barlow Park in Cairns, 7.30pm in round six of the inaugural National Premier League.
The newly formed club currently sits bottom of the ladder with five losses.
In round five, they lost to Brisbane Strikers 4-3.

The National Premier Leagues action continues this weekend with Round 6 featuring another set of exciting match-ups across the length of the Sunshine State. Stay up to date with the weekly preview.

Redlands United FC (2nd) v Queensland Academy of Sport (11th)
Friday, 19th April 2013 - Cleveland Showgrounds, 6:30pm

Round 6 of the National Premier Leagues kicks off with a Friday night match-up between two teams who have made vastly different starts to life in the NPL in Redlands United and Queensland Academy of Sport.

Matt Chandler’s Redlands side are sitting comfortably in second place on the table after recording four consecutive wins following a tight opening round loss away to Brisbane Strikers.

The Devils multi-pronged attack continues to pose problems for opposition defences, with consistent contributions from Ramone Close, Graham Fyfe, Jheison Macuace and Ruben Way seeing the club now boast the second best attacking record in the competition with 21 goals to its credit.

In second last place on the table, Queensland Academy of Sport’s stable of youngster is struggling to convert their fleet-footedness and silky technical skills into goals and competition points.

Following his side’s 6-1 defeat at the hands of Northern Fury last round, Academy head coach Josh McCloughan lamented his squad’s reluctance to learn from mistakes and will expect a tighter defensive display from his charges against one of the NPL’s form teams.

One bright spot for McCloughan though was Sam Cronin’s well-worked goal last week – only Academy’s third score for the season and their first since a gutsy opening round draw against Western Pride.

Northern Fury FC (6th) v Palm Beach Sharks FC (10th)
Saturday, 20th April 2013 – Townsville Sports Reserve, 6:00pm

Northern Fury will attempt to make it three home wins on the trot on Saturday evening when they face the Gold Coast’s Palm Beach Sharks at Townsville Sports Reserve.

The Fury have discovered some impressive form at home since the Easter break after starting the season with three mixed performances, defeating QAS 6-1 on the back of a hat-trick from Alex Read and a two-goal cameo from player-coach Gareth Edds.

The home side’s cause is further assisted by the proudly parochial support of their fans, with Fury officials anticipating yet another impressive turnout to spur the mostly local selected side to another three points.

Palm Beach will envy Fury’s momentum after their Round 5 fixture against Sunshine Coast was postponed due to wet weather; Sharks coach Oscar Langone however insists his side are well prepared for a challenging week of football ahead.

The long trip to Townsville is the first air journey for Palm Beach this season, and Langone sees it as a chance for his squad to further bond as a unit off the pitch, identifying comraderie and team spirit as a vital to his team stringing some results together.

Brisbane Strikers FC (3rd) v Moreton Bay United Jets FC (5th)
Saturday, 20th April 2013 – Perry Park, 7:00pm

Brisbane Strikers welcome Moreton Bay United to Perry Park on Saturday evening in what promises to be a grittily contested match between two of the NPL’s form teams.

Strikers have won four from five so far this season, however coach David Large remains concerned by his side’s fragile defence, which has failed to maintain a clean sheet since preseason.

In Strikers favour, however, is the potent attacking combination of striker Matt Thurtell and left winger Greg King – Thurtell returning to the form that saw him runaway with last year’s QSL Golden Boot by scoring his first hat-trick of the season against CQFC last week.

While respectful of the threat posed by the Strikers front line, especially out on the flanks, Jets coach Terry Kirkham is also well aware of his opponent’s recent defensive frailties, and insists his side will take the game to the hosts from the outset.

Kirkham also admitted the club’s postponed game against Brisbane City last round may yet prove to be a blessing in disguise, allowing his players to recharge mentality and physically after some bruising encounters in the opening rounds.

Kirkham singled out striker Royce Brownlie as an injury concern that has benefitted from the unexpected lay off, the veteran sustaining a badly bruised back in the hard fought loss to Redlands in Round 4.

FNQ FC Heat (9th) v CQFC Energy (12th)
Saturday, 20th April 2013 – Barlow Park, 7:30pm

Fresh from an impressive performance against top of the table Olympic FC last round, FNQ FC Heat face a markedly different challenge on Saturday night when they welcome bottom of the table CQFC Energy to their Cairns home ground.

Despite his opponent’s lacklustre start to the season, stand-in FNQ FC coach and technical director Chris Collins is adamant his side won’t be taking their Rockhampton-based opponents lightly on the basis of their previous results.

Collins concedes it’s time to build on the team’s promising early season performances, making special mention of the effort against Olympic, where the hosts lead the NPL’s benchmark side before conceding a penalty in the final ten minutes to split the points.

Meanwhile, CQFC’s campaign is showing signs it may just be turning the corner after a series of heavy defeats in the opening rounds.

Playing their first match at their home ground Rugby Park last week, Energy nearly upset a highly-fancied Strikers outfit, scoring first and almost overrunning their opposition with an inspired final twenty minutes fight back after falling three goals behind in the second half.

Of encouragement to Energy are the consistent performances of Chris Geddes, the Scotsman netting six goals to remarkably sit joint fourth amongst NPL goal-scorers this season.

Brisbane City FC (7th) v Western Pride FC (8th)
Sunday, 21st April 2013 – Goodwin Park, 4:00pm

The city of Ipswich renews its long-standing rivalry with the state capital on Sunday afternoon, when Western Pride face-off against Brisbane City in the opening game of Sunday’s double-header at Goodwin Park.

The match marks Pride’s first competitive fixture against a Brisbane-based club in their history, and may provide the impetus to turn around a worrisome form slide for Kasey Wehrman’s locally-selected side.

After starting the season promisingly, Pride have lost by a margin of three goals in each of their past three fixtures – last week’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Redlands of particular concern after the club started brightly, opening accounts through Russell Woodruffe, before fading in the second stanza.

Despite winning their past two games, City head coach Glen Volker remains concerned his side is yet to find their groove, with the Easter break and last week’s postponed match against Moreton Bay United disrupting his side’s momentum.

Still, the Newmarket-based club’s recent record cannot be ignored, with City scoring an impressive 15 goals in their past two fixtures off the back of solid contributions from the attack-minded Antonio Murray, Matt Biggins and Eric Frazier.

However, Volker is keen to avoid complacency in his squad and is now seeking greater consistency both at home and on the road after the mixed start to the campaign.

Olympic FC (1st) v Sunshine Coast FC Fire (4th)
Sunday, 21st April 2013 – Goodwin Park, 6:00pm

The final game of the round pits the National Premier Leagues best attack against the competition’s most miserly defence when top of the table Olympic FC host Sunshine Coast Fire in the feature match-up of Sunday’s double-header at Goodwin Park.

Olympic head coach Jim Bellas isn’t unduly concerned his team were unable to put away their chances against FNQ FC in Cairns last week, believing his side were better for the experience, bonding well on their first long-distance away trip despite the result.

The Olympic tactician expects another tough hit out against the Fire, suggesting the game will be won in defence and stressing the importance of not conceding first against last season’s QSL champions.

Fire head coach Kevin Aherne-Evans, agrees that defence will play a crucial role in the fixture - the match the first in a critical run of games for Sunshine Coast against south-east Queensland opponents that the Englishman concedes will prove a stern test of his squad’s title credentials.

Aherne-Evans stressed that he wasn’t getting ahead of himself, identifying the need to close down the combination between Olympic captain Danny Byrne and league-leading goalscorer Tim Smits as crucial to claiming the three points.

Fury not fazed by loss of key midfielder

Quote:

NORTHERN Fury player-coach Gareth Edds is confident his team can continue its winning ways without injured Michael Eisenhut.

Midfielder Eisenhut, 29, will miss tomorrow's National Premier League encounter against Palm Beach Sharks at the Townsville Sports Reserve after being ruled out with an abductor strain.

The in-form senior pulled the strings in last weekend's 6-1 defeat of QAS and scored his opening goal of the 2013 NPL season, but Edds said the youthful Fury would deal with Eisenhut's absence.

"Michael's been fantastic, he's a senior player and he's done very well, but overall the team as a unit has done well," he said.

"We're looking forward to the challenge and showing people exactly what we can do. All of them can step in and do a role."

The fifth-placed Fury are looking to score three straight wins after their wins over Western Pride and QAS and keep their unbeaten home record intact.

Palm Beach go into tomorrow's encounter having had their game against Sunshine Coast postponed last weekend and sit two spots from the ladder bottom with one win from four games.

Edds, however, has refused to get carried away with the Fury's form in their past two games, which saw a total of nine goals scored for only one goal conceded.

"I think they (Palm Beach) are doing OK in the league, and they'll be itching to get out there and play," he said.

"It (the postponement) could work either way - they could come out firing or they could be a bit sluggish after missing a week.

"We'll just have to concentrate on what we can do."

Injured Fury striker Jake Navarro (ankle) could make a return tomorrow after missing the QAS encounter, but in-form attacker Alex Reid will have no qualms carrying the main goal scoring duties if necessary.

Reid scored a first-half hat-trick against QAS and has four goals on his season tally to date.

"I've definitely got three (more) goals in me - if I can do it once I can do it twice," he said.

"But we never get over- confident and go into a game thinking 'we've got this'."

Edds has enjoyed his own striking form after scoring two goals coming off the bench last weekend, but the mentor said player development came before goals.

"You need to play against good players, but you also need to play with better players," he said.

"If you look through the squad, we've got 16 players who are 21 years and under, and three players who are over 21 (Edds, Eisenhut and Navarro).

"You need to have young fellas playing, but you also need experienced players helping them through with their development."

Kick-off for tomorrow's Fury v Palm Beach game at the Townsville Sports Reserve is 6pm.

Highlights from Strikers 7-0 win vs Moreton Bay last weekend. Gotta agree with Strikers assistant coach Graham Harvey after the game when he suggested A-League clubs should be looking at Greg King. The boy is bloody class (his hat trick goal = =d> ).

The National Premier Leagues action continues this weekend with Round 7 featuring another set of exciting match-ups across the length of the Sunshine State.

Stay up to date with all the fixtures in the weekly preview.

Queensland Academy of Sport (12th) v Brisbane City FC (6th)
Saturday, 27th April 2013 – Wolter Park, 3:30pm

Round 7 of the National Premier Leagues kick offs on Saturday afternoon when Queensland Academy of Sport face Brisbane City in the opening match of the Wolter Park double header.

Brisbane City received a scare last week against Western Pride when they conceded the opening goal before charging to a 3-1 lead; however City conceded again late to ensure a nervous final few minutes for head coach Glen Volker.

Despite the patchy performance City remain one of the league’s form sides on paper, taking maximum points from their last three games in a run that has seen them jump five places on the table since the second round whilst still holding a game in hand.

Meanwhile, QAS are yet to shrug off a slow start to the season that sees them sit at the foot of the NPL table with a solitary competition point.

The Academy youngsters showed improvement in their 3-1 defeat to Redlands United last weekend – holding their own against the second-placed Devils before conceding twice in the final five minutes to cede a share of the points.

However, with QAS now the only side in the NPL without a win to their name, head coach Josh McCloughan will be seeking a full ninety minute performance from his squad of elite youngsters for the first time this season.

Moreton Bay United Jets FC (7th) v FNQ FC Heat (10th)
Saturday, 27th April 2013 – Wolter Park, 6:00pm

In the weekend’s feature game, Moreton Bay United Jets play host to FNQ FC Heat in the second matchup of the Saturday double header at Wolter Park.

Following a series of mixed performances to start the season, both teams know their opponents are capable of bouncing back following heavy last round defeats – the Jets conceding seven goals to a rampant Brisbane Strikers at Perry Park while the Heat let in four at home to the previous winless CQFC Energy.

Jets and Heat will also be eager to end a lacklustre April on a positive note, with both sides winless since March and treading water in the bottom half of the table.

If the contest wasn’t unpredictable enough, both sides will also be without key defenders, with Chris Maticic and Shane Raso both suspended for Jets and Heat respectively after receiving red cards last round.

CQFC Energy (11th) v Olympic FC (1st)
Saturday, 27th April 2013 – Rugby Park, 7:00pm

Fresh from their first win of the season, CQFC Energy face their biggest challenge of their NPL campaign thus far when they welcome league leaders Olympic FC to Rugby Park on Saturday night.

After a shaky start to the year, CQFC turned the form guide on its head last week to record an unexpected 4-1 victory over a ten-man FNQ FC in Cairns.

The prolific Chris Geddes once again did the damage for Energy, netting the opener and finishing with a brace, and Olympic will need to shut down the Scottish attacker who has eight of the Energy’s 11 goals so far this season.

The undefeated Olympic will also be wary of complacency after a less than convincing performance last time they crossed the Tropic of Capricorn, drawing 1-1 with the then tenth placed FNQ FC in Cairns.

And while Olympic’s combination of Tim Smits, Danny Byrne and Jai Ingham has proved devastating up front, defensively the league leaders remain less convincing, having kept only one clean sheet this season against the last placed QAS in Round 2.

Sunshine Coast FC Fire (4th) v Northern Fury FC (5th)
Sunday, 28th April 2013 – Sunshine Coast Stadium, 2:00pm

Northern Fury will be looking to take their recent run of home form on the road Sunday afternoon when the Townsville-based side travel to Sunshine Coast to face the Fire.

Fury have strung together three consecutive home wins – briefly surging into the top four before midweek results pulled them back to fifth – however, Gareth Edd’s side will need to pick up points away from home to be considered genuine finals contenders.

For their part, Sunshine Coast Fire will be seeking to regalvanise their defence after conceding four goals last round to league leaders Olympic at Goodwin Park.

In spite of the blowout, Fire can still boast the best defensive record in the league, keeping three clean sheets in the opening six rounds due in no small part to the contribution of inspirational captain Greig Henslee.

In the front third, Fire head coach Kevin Aherne-Evans’ concerns are slowly fading – his side putting three past Palm Beach in the Coast Derby, with Jeremy Lynch regaining his scoring touch with a brace in the 3-1 win in the ANZAC Day catch-up fixture.

Western Pride FC (9th) v Brisbane Strikers FC (3rd)
Sunday, 28th April 2013 – North Ipswich Reserve, 4:00pm

Brisbane Strikers are looking to extend a three game winning streak on Sunday afternoon when they travel to North Ipswich Reserve to face the struggling Western Pride.

The third-placed Strikers put their fellow finals contenders on notice last week when they tore apart early season surprise packet Moreton Bay Jets 7-0 on the back of a hat-trick from left-winger Greg King.

More pleasing to head coach David Large though was his side’s defensive performance, with Strikers keeping their first clean sheet of the campaign and allowing the Jets few genuine scoring opportunities.

Western Pride’s ongoing defensive concerns remain unresolved however, having now shipped three or more goals in their past four fixtures to be without a competition point since March.

Head coach Kasey Wherman will be disappointed the leaky backline has masked continued improvement in the front third of the pitch, with former Central Coast Mariners forward Russell Woodruffe finding his scoring form of late to provide much needed assistance to early season lone wolf Peter Drager.

Palm Beach Sharks FC (8th) v Redlands United FC (2nd)
Sunday, 28th April 2013 – Mallawa Sports Complex, 5:30pm

Palm Beach seek to conclude a run of three matches in eight days on a positive note when they host second-placed Redlands United at Mallawa Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

The mercurial Sharks are struggling to put in a full ninety minute performance so far this season, sporadically dominating some of the league’s better sides, whilst at other times finding themselves well out of the contest.

Most troubling for Palm Beach coaching staff and supporters is the Sharks disappointing home form, with the side yet to record a win on their own turf – including a frustrating 3-1 loss midweek to Fire in the long-awaited Coast Derby.

Meanwhile Redlands United have no such worries, winning their past five fixtures following an opening weekend loss as opposing teams struggle with the Devils multi-pronged attack.

Matt Chandler’s side have shared the scoring between nine players so far this season, however Redlands will be looking to tighten up further at the back, having kept only the single clean sheet over the course of their impressive run.

FNQ FC MEDIA RELEASE | Fenech Joins Heat

The Skill360 FNQ FC Heat is welcoming experienced mentor Joe Fenech to the club’s Football Department.

The former CQFC Energy Head Coach and former Football Queensland Development Officer will act as interim coach for the remainder of the National Premier League season from next week.

Martin Docherty will remain as Head Coach but will act in more of an advisory role as he tends to an important family medical situation.

FNQ FC Technical Director, Chris Collins says Fenech’s appointment is a huge boost to the club.

“I spoke to the (FNQ FC) directors and I spoke to Martin and said: ‘look, we really need someone to come in and give us a hand’ and Joe fits the bill,” Collins told local media this morning.

“Joe’s vastly experienced; he gets the best out of players.”

“We need to make the team a little bit more competitive, we lack a bit of experience but Joe will bring that off the field too.”

Collins will lead the NPL side for the final time in this Saturday’s away match with Moreton Bay.

Fenech is tying-up loose ends in Rockhampton and is likely to arrive in Cairns next week.

Last week, Fenech decided to stand down from his multiple positions with NPL club, CQFC Energy after two and a half years in the Central Queensland region.

On field, the Heat is looking for a turn around in performance after last round’s loss.

The Heat sit in 10th spot on the league ladder with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses while Moreton Bay are placed 7th, having won 3 matches and lost twice.

QAS still without a win. A lot of focus on CQ but they are sitting above QAS.

I pray that everything goes well for Martin Docherty.

When is Paul Smalley going to take over the Fury academe from U12's through to U16's? I think he will attract some good coaches to the positions.

The goals kept flowing today.

Sunny Coast 2 Fury 1
Western Pride 0 Strikers 4
Palm Beach 4 Redlands 7

I went to the Pride vs Strikers game in Ipswich. Very comfortable win for the Strikers. Sadly it was marred by a shocking first half by the home team who seemed more intent on kicking the Strikers into submission than playing football.

Player/Coach Kasey Wehrman was given a straight red midway through the first half. It was behind play and from what I heard he apparently kicked out at a Strikers player. Amongst that there was more than a couple off the ball "cheap shots" and some pretty rude tackles from Pride. Sadly the result of one saw potential A-League recruit Matt Thurtell stretchered off with a bad knee injury.

Thankfully Pride were more restrained in the second half but after being 3-0 ahead at the break Strikers took the foot off the pedal and settled for a 4-0 win.

Good facilities/hospitality at Pride's home ground. I look forward to their progression over the coming seasons. Just a shame what transpired on the pitch in the first half this afternoon.

Will take 2-1 against SC.

Were easily the best team (bar Strikers) in the past two seasons of the QSL, a team that always thrashed us.

Was at the Pride v Strikers game too. Even as a Pride supporter I have to concur with what you say, was really some nasty stuff going on out there from the Pride team. The foul on Thurtell by number 8 was a shocker (my missus wanted to see a replay  ) , and then there were plenty of arguments going on between the teams while they waited for the wall/stretcher to get sorted. Was a little bit of justice that Richter (from memory) curled in that free kick to put the game to bed.
Pride only had one good chance, a brilliant cross from Will Jordan to Peter Drager unmarked after a gut busting run but he sidefooted wide.
I enjoy driving from Brisbane out to that ground, great setup and my daughter has fun on the grass with her ball.

It’s been a weekend the goalkeepers would rather forget in the National Premier Leagues, with 37 goals scored in seven games across the Sunshine State.

Palm Beach Sharks FC 1 (Jarrod KYLE 84’)
Sunshine Coast FC Fire 3 (Jeremy LYNCH 25’ 57’, Paul ARNISON 68’p)
Crowd: unavailable

Sunshine Coast Fire claimed bragging rights in the first ever NPL coastal derby on Thursday afternoon, defeating Palm Beach Sharks 3-1 at Mallawa Sports Complex in a rescheduled Round 5 fixture.

Jeremy Lynch netted either side of half time for the Fire – his first goals since his side’s opening round rout of CQFC Energy –before Paul Arnison sealed the result from the penalty spot midway through the second stanza.

The opener came when Arnison split the Sharks backline with a deft through ball for Wayne Knight, the right midfielder immediately squaring a pass back to Lynch who finished firmly from the top of the area.

Lynch once again was ‘Johnny-on-the-spot’ for Fire’s second, tapping in from close range after left-winger Nico Bechar drew out Sharks keeper Ryan Meskell, the Frenchman unselfishly teeing up his younger team-mate for the simple finish.

Arnison received just reward for a busy performance midway through the second half, converting from the penalty spot with 22 minutes remaining after Bechar was felled inside the area on the turn.

Sharks scored a consolation with six minutes to play courtesy of Jarrod Kyle’s powerful header, however it proved too little too late for the hosts, who are winless in their past four fixtures.

The two coastal teams will renew their burgeoning rivalry in July in a Round 16 clash to be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Brisbane City FC 2 (Antonio MURRAY 51’ 64’)
Queensland Academy of Sport 0
Crowd: 550 (double header combined)

Brisbane City have recorded their fourth win in a row, following an unconvincing 2-0 victory over a ten man Queensland Academy of Sport at Wolter Park on Saturday afternoon.

Star striker Antonio Murray once again did the damage for City, continuing his recent scoring form with a brace to lift his personal tally to 11 for the season.

The result somewhat flattered Brisbane City, who were fortunate not to go in behind at the break after QAS had the better of the opening half – the youngsters unable to make repeated attacking forays count on the scoreboard.

The opening goal came courtesy of an inspired run from Matt Biggins, the attacking midfielder dancing through the heart of the Academy defence before laying the ball for Murray, who finished with his now customary confidence.

QAS immediately sought a reply, however their cause was hindered when Peter Roditis was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence just prior to the hour mark.

The extra man saw City take control, Murray netting his second not long after the dismissal when he plucked Thomas Shannon’s long range effort out of the air, turning and firing home from near the penalty spot.

QAS continued to push for a goal, getting in behind City’s defence on several occasions in the closing stages, only to be repeatedly denied by the linesman’s flag.

The result sees QAS remain at the foot of the NPL table, while City stay in touch with the top four in fifth with a game still in hand.

Moreton Bay United Jets FC 2 (Joshua SOUTH 32’, Michael MCEVOY 36’)
FNQ FC Heat 3 (Tom MURPHY 1’, Justin SABBADIN 28’, Jamie CARROLL 54’)
Crowd: approx. 550 (double header combined)

Far North Queensland FC Heat have ended a difficult month on a positive note, defeating Moreton Bay United 3-2 at Wolter Park on Saturday evening to lift the Cairns-based side to eighth on the NPL table.

FNQ FC stunned the Jets from the kick-off, sensationally taking the lead inside the first minute of the match when midfielder Tom Murphy fired a scorching first time strike from long range.

The fast-paced contest offered chances for both sides before Heat extended their lead on 27 minutes, Josh Jennison’s header rebounding off the crossbar for the lurking Justin Sabbadin, who steered the ball in to the back of the net on the volley.

Buoyed by a vocal home crowd, Jets responded with two goals in four minutes to restore parity – Joshua South capitalising on a goal-keeping error for the first, the second coming from Michael McEvoy’s benign 30 yard free kick that inexplicably evaded the attentions of a raft of defenders before bouncing in off the far post.

Jamie Carroll restored Heat’s advantage following the restart, running on to a sharp cut back from left-winger Matt Murphy to drive his shot home from the top of the area.

A grandstand finale ensued, with several Jets attacking forays denied by desperate defending and a series of saves from young Heat goalkeeper Anthony Zecchinati on debut.

In a controversial conclusion, Jets saw several passionate penalty pleas turned down by referee Jason Crow late in the second half as well as seeing a goal disallowed for offside with two minutes remaining.

CQFC Energy 3 (Sander WATERLAND 23’, Chris GEDDES 32’p, Jordan MILLER 89’p)
Olympic FC 9 (Jai INGHAM 2’, Ross ARCHIBALD 9’, own goal 26’, Tim SMITS 45’+1 71’ 77’, Danny BYRNE 49’, Carl TABULO 68’, HEATH 88’)
Crowd: unavailable

Olympic FC extended their undefeated start of the season to seven games on Saturday night in Rockhampton when they dismantled CQFC Energy 9-3 at Rugby Park.

Six players scored for Olympic in the rout, but it was a hat-trick from former Brisbane Roar striker Tim Smits that sealed the result for the league leaders after a see-sawing opening half.

Jai Ingham gave the visitors a flying start when he turned in Danny Byrne’s cross in only the second minute. Soon after Ross Archibald replicated his spectacular long range effort from last round, doubling the lead from 25 yards with a blistering strike.

The contest remained in the balance for the rest of the half – Energy edged closer through Sander Waterland, before conceding an own goal, only to bounce back almost immediately courtesy of Chris Geddes’ penalty.

Smits first goal restored Olympic’s two goal advantage just prior to the break – the prolific striker calmly slotting a shot from 10 yards out.

The second half was all Olympic however, captain Byrne spectacularly extending the visitor’s advantage when he flicked the ball over his head to create space, then curled his shot into the corner of the goal.

Substitute Carl Tabulo added another for the visitors from a free-kick on 20 yards before Smits scored twice in 6 minutes to secure his hat-trick, taking his personal tally to 11 goals this season.

Substitute Matt Heath got in on the act late, chipping the keeper for his first goal of the season, before Jordan Miller’s consolation penalty closed out the twelve goal feast.

A scare was put through the Energy camp early in the second half when goalkeeper Tim English was taken to hospital following a collision with teammate Matteson Maguire, Energy officials later confirming English was cleared of serious injury.

Sunshine Coast FC Fire 2 (Leon DWYER 1’, Nico BECHAR 80’)
Northern Fury FC 1 (Jake NAVARRO 49’)
Crowd: approx. 250

Sunshine Coast Fire claimed their second win in four days on Sunday, defeating the in-form Northern Fury 2-1 at Sunshine Coast Stadium to maintain their place in the NPL top four.

Left-winger Nico Bechar was the star for Fire, setting up Leon Dwyer’s first minute opener with a well-timed run before netting the decisive goal with ten minutes remaining to seal the points for the hosts.

Fire opened accounts almost from the kick-off when Paul Arnison spotted Bechar’s burst down the left, the Frenchman’s ensuing cross deflecting into the path of Dwyer, who tapped in from close range.

Fire held the advantage til the break, before Jake Navarro levelled terms four minutes after the restart when he rose high at the far post to nod home Reyze Kelly’s pin-point cross.

Both sides spurred chances to take the lead before Bechar popped up again for his third goal of the season – capitalising on a Fury defensive error brought about from defensive pressure from Chris Toovey.

The loss is Northern Fury’s first since the Easter break and sees the Townsville-based club fall to sixth on the NPL ladder, two points adrift of the Brisbane City in outright fifth.

Western Pride FC 0
Brisbane Strikers FC 4 (Matt THURTELL 10’, Greg KING 38’, Jonti RICHTER 45’+1, Josh TAYLOR 72’)
Crowd: approx. 500

Brisbane Strikers recorded their fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 4-0 defeat of a ten-man Western Pride in a bruising encounter at North Ipswich Reserve.

Pride player-coach Kasey Wehrman was sent off in the first half for the hosts, the former Strikers NSL player holding nothing back against his former club in an ill-timed challenge on Greg King.

Star striker Matt Thurtell was also stretchered off for Brisbane prior to half-time following a heavy challenge from Aaron Christensen, last season’s QSL golden boot Thurtell expected to be out for several weeks.

Strikers opened the scoring on ten minutes when Thurtell controlled King’s pass with his chest before firing home on the volley.

King then extended the lead following the dismissal of Wehrman, running on to Josh McVey’s early through-ball before calmly dinking his shot over Pride goalkeeper Steve Purdy.

Pride continued to impose themselves physically on their opposition, however the plan came unstuck when the hosts conceded a free kick on 25 yards – Jonti Richter dipping his shot over the wall from the subsequent set piece.

Substitutes Josh De Nittis and Josh Taylor combined to seal the result on 72 minutes for the visitors– de Nittis playing in Taylor who placed his shot confidently in an encouraging sign for Strikers head coach David Large who will call upon his reserves to replace Thurtell in coming weeks.

The result keeps Strikers in third place on the NPL table, level on points with Redlands United and one point shy of competition leaders Olympic FC.

Palm Beach Sharks FC 4 (Jarrod KYLE 61’, Chris LUCAS 82’ 88’p, RODRIGUEZ 89’)
Redlands United FC 7 (Reuben WAY 2’ 40’, George BARBAROUSES 32’, Graham FYFE 35’ 56’ 81’p, Jheison MACUACE 63’)
Crowd: unavailable

Palm Beach Sharks lost their third game in eight days on Sunday afternoon, falling 7-4 at home to Redlands United in a high-scoring conclusion to round 7 of the National Premier Leagues at Mallawa Sports Complex.

Redlands controlled the match from the outset, and held a four goal advantage at the half, with Sharks only saving face with three goals in the final ten minutes.

Reuben Way opened accounts for the Devils two minutes in to the contest, but it wasn’t til the half hour mark that Cleveland-based side made their advantage tell on the scoreboard, with George Barbarouses and Graham Fyfe extending the lead with two goals in quick time.

Way netted a second to effectively seal the result before half time – the goal taking the 22 year old’s season tally to eight for the campaign.

Fyfe added another just before the hour, curling a firmly struck free-kick in from 25 yards, before sealing his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the final ten minutes.

Jheison Macuace again demonstrated his ability to craft a goal out of nothing, beating four defenders before slotting a well-taken shot in to bottom corner for his fourth goal in three weeks.

With the three points secured, Redlands head coach Matt Chandler took the opportunity to blood younger players in the final minutes, Palm Beach taking advantage of the changes to score three goals in the final ten minutes – Chris Lucas netting a consolation brace for the hosts to extend his season tally to five goals.

The result sees Redlands continue to nip at the heels of league leaders Olympic FC, while Palm Beach Sharks remain mired in the bottom half of the table with only a single competition point to show for the month of April.http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&sID=269940&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=23396719
