Queensland Academy of Sport converted potential into points on Friday night, chalking up their first win of the NPL season with an impressive 2-1 result against Brisbane Strikers at Perry Park.

Academy’s fleet-footed youngsters caught Strikers off guard early, but it wasn’t until the 26th minute that the mercurial Abrahim Yango put his side ahead with a well-struck shot from 15 yards.

QAS should’ve been good value for a half time lead, however a lapse of concentration from a late Greg King free kick saw Strikers defender Alex Henderson pull his side level in the last minute of the half.

The break didn’t alter the balance of play though, with Sam Sibatuara restoring QAS’s lead with a superb chipped finish over advancing Strikers goalkeeper David Chambers to deliver his side all three points.

Strikers mounted a desperate late surge – with a header from a late corner in the congested penalty area cleared off the line – however, without injured star striker Matt Thurtell were unable to find a winner.

The result sees QAS move one spot off the bottom of the table, while Strikers remain in third place.

Olympic FC took their unbeaten start to the season to eight games on Saturday night, defeating Northern Fury 5-3 in an end-to-end contest at Goodwin Park.

The floodgates opened early in the high-scoring affair as the energetic Fury surprised the league leaders, Alex Read heading home confidently from Jake Navarro’s cross after barely five minutes.

Fury were denied a second by the post before Olympic turned their game up a notch – Nick Efthasis levelling terms when he nodded in from close range from a corner kick on 21 minutes.

Three minutes later Jake McLean put the hosts ahead when he finished off his classy run with an even classier finish from just inside the penalty area.

Tim Smits then extended his season tally to 12 goals with a trademark header on 38 minutes to give the hosts a comfortable 3-1 lead at the break.

The second half started with a flourish when Carl Tabulo extended the host’s lead with a firmly struck shot only a minute after the restart.

To their credit, Fury replied instantly with Corey Waples striking a screamer from 20 yards. However, Olympic re-established their advantage courtesy of captain Danny Byrne only a minute later.

Fury scored a third when Jake Navarro slotted a crisp shot on the turn with 13 minutes remaining, however Olympic held firm to see off the late challenge from the visitors.

The result sees Olympic FC stay top of the league, with other scores over the weekend increasing their buffer to 3 points; Northern Fury meanwhile drop to sixth.

Two goals in two minutes from Reuben Way inspired Redlands United to a share of the points on Saturday night, the Devils drawing 3-3 with fellow finals contenders Sunshine Coast Fire at Cleveland Showgrounds.

The Fire held a two goal advantage at the half but were unable to hold on against a fast-finishing Redlands inspired by a parochial home crowd.

Leon Dwyer opened accounts for the visitors in the 20th minute when he burst through the heart of the Redlands defence, his well-placed shot brushing the fingertips of fully-extended Redlands keeper Mitch O’Brien.

Dwyer continued his good form and underlined his growing partnership with Jeremy Lynch, cutting the ball back after another impressive run for Lynch to finish strongly on the half hour.

Redlands cause wasn’t helped when they lost captain Michael Lee to injury before the half-time break, however the hosts showed more initiative in the second stanza and pulled a goal back when Reuben Way pounced on a parried save to score from close range.

Paul Arnison restored Fire’s two-goal advantage from the penalty spot eight minutes later, before Macuace’s star turn settled the draw in the final ten minutes.

Macauace’s first came when he poked home a shot through a crowded penalty box and juxtaposed with his second – a scintillating 20 yard effort that sent the local crowd into raptures.

The result sees both teams maintain their place in the NPL top four, however both cede ground to competition front runners Olympic FC.

Moreton Bay United Jets FC 2 (Michael MCEVOY 13’ 24’)

Moreton Bay Jets returned to the top half of the NPL table on Saturday night following a hard fought 2-1 victory against CQFC Energy at Rugby Park in Rockhampton.

Michael McEvoy netted a first half brace off the back of two set pieces to give the Jets their first win since March and consign CQFC to the foot of the NPL table.

The Jets adapted well to the patchy Rugby Park surface, altering their usually fluid passing game to a more direct style in light of the difficult conditions.

McEvoy’s first came courtesy of a short corner with the defender positioning himself adroitly to steer home a low cross with a first time strike.

He followed it up 11 minutes later off the back of a free kick, Karl Dodd latching on to the secondary ball to set up McEvoy for another strong finish.

The prolific Chris Geddes once again stood up for Energy, converting from the penalty spot for his 10th goal of the campaign.

However, despite a fast and furious finish from the hosts, who were spurred on by the enthusiastic home crowd, the injury-depleted Moreton Bay ultimately proved good value for the win.

Western Pride have rallied in the absence of suspended player-coach Kasey Wehrman to record their first NPL win since March, defeating a ten man FNQ FC Heat 3-0 at Eric Evans Oval in Ipswich on Sunday.

Peter Drager and Russell Woodruffe continued their recent scoring form for the Pride in a polished performance from the hosts in their first home fixture at the venue.

Drager pounced just prior to the half hour to open accounts when Woodruffe’s fierce shot bounced back off the crossbar invitingly for his teammate.

Pride held the lead until the half before FNQ FC goalkeeper Mikel Breckinridge was red-carded for a challenge on Zelmer Martinez – Woodruffe stepping up to convert the subsequent spot kick.

Drager secured his brace and the result in the final ten minutes, finishing well from Jay Kitching’s piercing run through the Heat midfield.

The three points lifts Pride into seventh on the NPL table and above Heat on goal difference, with both sides recording seven points from their opening eight fixtures.

Brisbane City striker Antonio Murray has stormed to the top of the NPL goal scoring charts, netting a hat-trick in his side’s 4-2 win over Palm Beach Sharks at Spencer Park on Sunday evening.

Former Scottish Premier League player Murray displayed the neat finishing for which he is renowned, twice chipping Palm Beach goalkeeper Ryan Meskell to take his personal tally to 14 goals from just six appearances so far this season.

Murray opened the scoring for the hosts with the first of his chipped efforts on 21 minutes, however defensive errors gifted Palm Beach a 2-1 lead at the break – errant passes at the back resulting in goals to Jarrod Kyle and Chris Lucas.

A fiercely contested second stanza saw Eric Frazier and Levi Hilton dismissed for City and Sharks respectively but it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that the hosts, buoyed by a vocal home crowd, overran their opponents.

Murray’s second came when he slotted home a pass across the face of goal, before Alistair Pase put the home side ahead with a sharp finish with five minutes remaining.

Murray then put the icing on another superb individual performance, once again chipping Meskell to secure his hat-trick.

The result sees City keep the pressure on the NPL top four, with Glen Volker’s side now a point adrift of Sunshine Coast with a game still in hand. Palm Beach meanwhile remain mired in the lower half of the table.

Drager's double lifts club Pride

PETER Drager was in the proverbial wars as only the dangerous, and at times awkward-looking, striker can.

He was troubled by his wisdom teeth, copped a knee to his sensitive zone and got cleaned up just as he regained his composure.

However, the dependable Western Pride player scored the club's first double in the National Premier League as his team overran Far North Queensland 3-0 at Bundamba.

Drager was quick to praise his teammates for finishing the job.

The much-needed win came against a side fresh from a coaching shake-up and having their goalkeeper Mikel Breckenridge sent off early in yesterday's second half.

However, there was no denying Drager's role.

Playing on the Ipswich Knights ground where he produced regular three and four goal hauls in recent seasons, the Golden Boot winner made several damaging runs.
"I'm pretty happy on my old home field,'' Drager said. "I like scoring goals here.

"All the boys played really well around the park and it showed in the scoreline - a clean sheet, we're really happy with.''

Drager's first goal came from a super Will Jordan cross that Russell Woodruffe struck and hit the crossbar. Drager was on the spot to finish it off.

Drager's second goal put Pride up 3-0. It followed terrific lead-up work by speedster Jay Kitching, who zigzagged up the middle before delivering a pass to his dangerous teammate.

But while Drager's eventful homecoming was rewarded with a well-deserved victory, rival coach Joe Fenech endured a tough day in his first NPL game at Bundamba.

The former Ipswich Knights Premier League mentor was guiding the side for the first time, having only conducted two training sessions through the week. (See a separate story on Fenech this week.)

Adding to the passionate coach's woes was Breckenridge's send-off.

Woodruffe converted the penalty awarded after hard-working Pride defender Zelmar Martinez was brought down in the box.

Yesterday's Pride victory was their second of the season, adding to a first-round draw.

With regular player/coach Kasey Wehrman suspended, Pride under-20 coach Peter Bannon controlled proceedings from the dugout.

Bannon said he would have liked to have seen FNQ finish with 11 players to give his team a better gauge of its progress. However, he said the handy win was welcome.

The more I see this lad play the more I like him. An all-round midfielder in that he can win a ball and slide a pass through to the front men. Him and Edds were a different class last night.

Too true they both really showed their experience and class last night fare call to the other lads they fought hard and played well. Great result Another nail in the coffin of the old guard.but most importantly a real inspiration to the youth players.

Some of Eddsy's dribbling skills just miffed their Central Defenders, him and Eisenhower (lol) really are the General's of that team.

Really really really hope Edds curler in the second half makes it into extended highlights, fuck that would have been some goal.

Watched it happen in slow motion on the grandstand, think everyone was collectively about to orgasm until it hit the bar!

Pride's strike power in top gear

AFTER helping his team score nine goals in the past two games, stand-in captain Will Jordan had every reason to be satisfied.
However, it wasn't scoring himself in Western Pride's latest 6-2 victory that gave Jordan most pleasure. It was seeing Pride's National Premier League striking combination working together.
From 1-0 down, Western Pride released the handbrake to score five unanswered goals against Central Queensland at Bundamba.
"That was a great result," Jordan said after Pride's best win of the season.
"We started slow but we hit our straps with about 15 gone.
"I think their goal gave us a big wake-up call."
Playing on the left wing, Jordan had an important role making breaks and feeding attacking teammates Peter Drager and Russell Woodruffe.
"We were hammered early on in the season for not scoring goals and it wasn't that we didn't have the class up there," Jordan said.
"It was just getting used to each other as a third and working with the boys in behind us. It's coming together at the right time."
Drager had another exceptional game, scoring a hat-trick after a double in Pride's previous 3-0 win over Far North Queensland.
Woodruffe scored a double, including a first half penalty, on Saturday night.
Captaining the side for his third game with Niall McCarthy injured, Jordan delivered some dangerous crosses.
"Towards the start of the season, we haven't really taken our performance from the previous week. That was the pressure behind us at the start of today," Jordan said.
"Once we got out there and kind of settled down, we basically just free-roamed. Pete Drager and Rusty up top did some great work.
"I'm happy to look up and see those two boys running in."
Jordan, 22, played junior football with Oxley before joining Taringa and returning to Oxley last year.
Player/coach Kasey Wehrman completed his two-game suspension watching from the sideline. "They got into a good rhythm and we got some joy with our dead ball finally and that helped relieve a bit of pressure as well," he said.
Wehrman said his main role after consecutive wins was keeping everyone focused on the balance between attack and defence.
"We want to be free and try and score more goals but we also don't want to let them get any freebies either," he said.
"A 3-1 scoreline (at halftime) probably wasn't a fair look at the game.
"I thought in the second half, they really put their authority on the game and took it by the scruff of the neck."
Robbie Livingstone and Lincoln Rule controlled the midfield.

Redlands United FC (2nd) v Olympic FC (1st)
Friday, 17th May 2013 – Cleveland Showgrounds, 6:30pm

Round Ten of the National Premier Leagues kicks off with a bang on Friday night when Redlands United host a top-of-the-table clash against Olympic FC at Cleveland Showgrounds.

Redlands were apace with the league leaders through the opening seven rounds, however a draw against Sunshine Coast and a loss against Northern Fury in the club’s two previous outings has allowed Olympic to pull six points clear atop the table.

Olympic remain the NPL’s only unbeaten side nearing the midpoint of the regular season; however, in an encouraging sign for the Devils, Olympic have not kept a clean sheet since the second round win against QAS.

It promises to be an attacking contest, with Olympics front three of Tim Smits, Danny Byrne and Jai Ingham sharing 25 goals between them; while Redlands attacking trio of Reuben Way, Graham Fyfe and Jheison Macuace have netted a combined total of 22 times for the hosts.

CQFC Energy (12th) v Queensland Academy of Sport (11th)
Saturday, 18th May 2013 – Martens Oval, 6:00pm

Bottom placed Central Queensland FC Energy have the chance to move off the foot of the NPL ladder on Saturday night when they host QAS at Martens Oval in Bundaberg.

The fixture is CQFC’s first foray to Bundaberg, as the Rockhampton-based side strives to position itself as the football destination of choice for the region’s aspiring elite footballers.

Results haven’t been flattering thus far for the Energy, who fell to Western Pride 6-2 in Ipswich last round, however team spirit remains high and with some promising passages of play the side is edging ever closer to a reversal of form.

QAS will also view the fixture as a chance to improve their table position, the Academy’s talented youngsters falling to FNQ FC 3-2 last weekend a week after recording their first win of the campaign.

While the result could go either way, much will depend on how impressive QAS and Brisbane Roar youth defender Cameron Crestani matches up against Energy sharpshooter Chris Geddes – the Scot sitting third amongst NPL goal scorers with ten goals so far this season.

Brisbane Strikers FC (4th) v Sunshine Coast FC Fire (5th)
Saturday, 18th May 2013 – Perry Park, 7:00pm

An old rivalry is rekindled in a new setting on Saturday night when Brisbane Strikers host former QSL foes Sunshine Coast Fire in a mouth-watering match-up at Perry Park.

Both sides will be looking to bounce back after suffering defeats last weekend – Strikers falling 3-2 to Palm Beach, while Fire conceded late to go down 1-0 at home against Brisbane City.

After an impressive start to the season Strikers defensive frailties have been highlighted of late, with David Large’s side yet to record a competition point in May and in danger of slipping outside the top four.

Sunshine Coast’s concerns are at the other end of the pitch, with Kevin Aherne-Evans consistently lamenting his side’s inability to convert chances into goals this season.

Sunshine Coast still boast the best defensive record in the league however, and Strikers will need their attacking wing combination of Greg King and Jonti Richter to be at their best if they are to break down the Fire wall.

Moreton Bay United Jets FC (7th) v Western Pride FC (8th)
Saturday, 18th May 2013 – Wolter Park, 7:00pm

Western Pride will be looking to record their third straight win when they travel to Wolter Park in a mid-table match up against Moreton Bay United Jets on Saturday night.

Pride are progressing well this season and have found form in recent rounds against regional clubs FNQ FC Heat and CQFC Energy – front pairing Russell Woodruffe and Peter Drager proving near unstoppable in the back-to-back home wins.

However, the Ipswich based club’s challenge is to carry that form on the road against a competitive Moreton Bay outfit that have impressed without reward in recent rounds.

The Jets toiled valiantly to be level with Olympic after 80 minutes last weekend, only to cede their share of the points by conceding two late goals to the league leaders.

The fade out proved particularly disappointing for the Jets’ parochial supporter base, who haven’t seen their side record a competition point at their Wolter Park home since late March.

FNQ FC Heat (9th) v Palm Beach Sharks FC (10th)
Saturday, 18th May 2013 – Barlow Park, 7:30pm

Far North Queensland FC Heat return to the tropical north on Saturday night when they host the NPL’s southernmost side, Palm Beach Sharks, at Barlow Park.

The fixture is the Heat’s first at home since Round 6 after the Cairns-based club concluded a three match road trip to the state’s south-east corner with two wins and a loss to move to ninth on the table.

Last weekend, FNQ found form with an impressive 3-0 result against QAS as star striker Jamie Carroll netted his first hat-trick of the campaign to extend his personal tally to five goals for the season.

Palm Beach are also coming off a season-reviving victory after they defeated perennial powerhouse Brisbane Strikers for their first home win as mid-season signings Jarrod Kyle and Alex Panic start to gel in the front third.

The duo will need to be on song for the Sharks again this weekend as the club contends with the additional challenge of travelling some 1750 kilometres for the fixture – the longest away trip of any NPL club in the country.

Brisbane City FC (3rd) v Northern Fury FC (6th)
Sunday, 19th May 2013 – Spencer Park, 3:00pm

Brisbane City will strive to cement their position in the National Premier Leagues top four when they host Northern Fury at Spencer Park on Sunday afternoon.

City have surged into third place on the table with six consecutive wins and, with a game in hand compared to their fellow finals contenders, will be keen to set themselves up for a tilt at the title in the second half of the season.

League-leading goal scorer Antonio Murray continues to impress for City, netting for the fourth consecutive week in last round’s hard-fought 1-0 win against Sunshine Coast Fire.

Northern Fury have strike power of their own though, with Alex Read finding the form that saw him represent the club at A-League level – the young forward scoring a double against Redlands last weekend to take his personal haul to eight goals for the campaign.

Robinson Moves On



Brisbane Strikers skipper Nick Robinson has been released by the club and has signed with NPL rivals Redlands United.
Robinson, 30 (pictured), had not been selected to play for the first team since Round 3 when the Strikers lost 7-2 to Olympic FC and, after a period of time trying to force his way back into selection calculations via the Under-20s, has opted to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
Robinson had been discussing his situation with the club’s management, with the outcome being that the club had decided to release him from his contract to enable him to commence negotiations with other clubs.
“It has been a difficult situation for ‘Robbo’, the club and for me”, said head coach David Large today.
“No club wants to be in a situation in which its skipper, for whatever reason, is not regularly leading the team on to the pitch. But I reached a decision after the Olympic game that Robbo’s form had dipped and that at that point in time we could not justify his inclusion in the game day fifteen.
“After a short period in the Under-20s Robbo took a look at that situation and we decided that the best way forward was for him to look elsewhere to allow him the opportunity to play first team football. He goes with our blessing and with our thanks for the contribution he has made to this club since joining us in early 2011”.
For his part Robinson said he would leave with good memories of the club as he prepares to don the red shirt of the Devils – which might seem a neat fit given his Mancunian origins.
“I would like to thank the fans, players, coaching staff and all staff members of the Brisbane Strikers for a fantastic two-and-a-half years and wish you all the very best for the future”, he said.
