Juniors go Down Under for Asiad preparation

PETALING JAYA: Harimau Muda A coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee will leave for Australia on Monday to finalise the team’s participation in the Queensland State League.

The former international said he has yet to decide where the team will be based when they compete in Australia’s second tier football league in March.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin revealed last Saturday that the ministry will contribute RM2mil to fund the stint in Australia, which will serve as the team’s preparation for the Incheon Asian Games in September.

“I need to thank the minister and the National Sports Council (NSC) for supporting our programme in Australia,” said Kim Swee on Sunday.

“We will be playing competitive league matches and I believe it will give the players a valuable experience ahead of the Asiad.

“We have the option of picking either Brisbane or Gold Coast as our base ... I will survey the facilities in both places before making a decision.”

Last year, the Harimau Muda A squad were based in Slovakia for eight months as a part of their preparation for the Myanmar SEA Games.

The team failed to retain the gold medal in the biennial Games, finishing fourth after losing to Singapore in the bronze-medal playoff.

Kim Swee stressed that the team’s playing stint in the Queensland State League is vital for the newcomers in the team as he has released nine players from the previous squad.

The 43-year-old Kim Swee said that the national Under-23 team’s lack of depth was obvious in the Myanmar SEA Games when the back-up players failed to fill the void left by injured regulars.

“The stint in Australia will be a good opportunity for the newcomers to step up and claim their spots in the Asian Games squad,” said Kim Swee.

Wow I suggested that the ffa should do the exact same thing by purchasing a club in Europe to help our young players out. As i remember it met with a high degree of criticism from the forum. Just goes to show that at least Malaysia can think outside the square.FFS ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

So they play one season??? Who are they replaced with the following season? Money talks but this seems like a bit of a joke and makes a mockery of a league I did my best to support last season (attending W Pride matches).

Sounds like it's to fill a gap this year, before another club is brought in in 2015. Isn't there talk of another CQ team (Mariners)?

It's not too late. W Pride still have player vacancies.... if you can find the cash it's another way to support the senior team!

Some good fixtures this weekend.

Derbies in City vs Olympic and FNQ Heat vs Northern Fury and some interesting contests in Roar vs Harimau Muda and Sunny Coast vs Palm Beach.

Even SWQ Thunder have a pretty even game ahead of them against the Bye! Should be a good break from being flogged for once

Western Pride , the entity from the Ipswich must be odds on to be the next Qld national pub league entity to go down the toilet.
A look at all the age groups and they are struggling, perhaps this can be put down to the work of the predecessor of Kasey Wehrman.
The future of football in the west looks dire if you care to observe the standard small sided football as
the National Curriculum seems to have bypassed this part of the world.

Does on field success determine survival at this level? If you have cash you can "pay" for your spot it seems.

What young player is going to continue play at this level and get beat every week, ask
those who played for Wide Bay last season .
What parent is going to fork out the time and money to see young Brucie and Shelia get
their confidence hammered.

Football Ipswich will be the architects of their own downfull.

FI objected vehemently to the gang of three BN NPL clubs from running a 2nd tier junior comp.

It would have been in the best interests of football development for the 2nd tier to have taken place,
with the lesser NPL junior first teams and FFNSW, 2nd gold coast and 2nd sunshine cost being able join this comp .

But NO FI and the community clubs are so concerned about losing their players (and revenue) rather than player development.

Hence the mess that is Football in Brisbane.

I wonder if the Western Pride are even getting the best youth in the region. I'm hearing the cost to play is huge, with kids rather sticking with their Church league clubs or else Bulls, Spirit etc.

I also wonder if the region came cope with Pride, Knights, Spirit and Bulls, with Force, Lions and Stormers not too far away.

Pride Confirm Wehrman Departure

http://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=30550854

Western Pride today confirmed club Technical Director and Senior Men’s Coach Kasey Wehrman will leave the club at the end of this season to return to Norway.

A former Socceroos representative, Wehrman accepted the difficult task of establishing the senior team while undertaking a mentor role for all of the coaching staff at Pride in the set-up phase of the NPL competition and Western Pride FC.

Pride General Manager Pat Boyle spoke glowingly of Wehrman’s contribution to the club, “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kasey for all of his hard work and laying down a strong foundation for the club to build on in the future.”

“Pride fully support Kasey’s decision to return to Norway with his partner Anja as they have purchased a property which has expedited Kasey’s decision to move on a year earlier than the initial three year plan.’’

Boyle added that planning was well underway for the 2015 season and advertisements for the Senior Men’s Coach and Technical Director’s positions will be published shortly.

While keen to further develop his coaching career in Norway, where he spent eight seasons before returning to play in the Hyundai A-League with Newcastle Jets in 2010, Wehrman acknowledged the opportunities offered at Western Pride over the past two seasons.

“The club has been nothing but 100 percent supportive the whole way through,’’ Wehrman said.

“It’s been been a really tightknit club. I know it’s been a tough season this year but last year we had some good highs and some lows as well.”

“It’s definitely made me a better coach,” Wehrman added.

Pride finished their inaugural NPL Queensland season in eighth position, however this year sit in eleventh after recording their third win of the campaign on Sunday in Townsville against Northern Fury.

Pride host Brisbane City this Saturday night at Briggs Road Complex, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.

Richter Super Strike Sinks Pride
Tweet

Words: Steve Pitman
Image: Brisbane Strikers

Jonti Richter spared Brisbane Strikers’ blushes on Sunday, curling home an injury time corner to lift his side to a 4-3 win over Western Pride at Perry Park.

A penalty from Pride’s Peter Drager cancelled out Matt Thurtell’s opening goal, before Strikers took a two goal lead into the break courtesy of Andy Thompson and Michael Angus.

Pride fought back to level terms in the second half via Chris Scott and Drager before Richter sensationally stole the points for the hosts, scoring directly from a corner kick in the final minutes.

Strikers marksman Thurtell got the hosts away to an ideal start in 15 minutes, running on to Jheison Macuace’s throughball then beating Pride goalkeeper Andres Pascoe with an angled left footed strike.

Drager equalized for his team from the penalty spot fifteen minutes later before Strikers winger Scot Coulson went on a rampage over the following five minutes, delivering the final pass from out wide for well-taken goals to Andy Thompson and Michael Angus to send the Strikers into the half time break 3-1 ahead.

Coulson spurned the chance to effectively seal the win shortly after the restart when he failed to turn in Thompson’s cross from close range.

On the hour Pride mounted their comeback through Scott, who cut in from the right wing to beat Strikers goalkeeper David Chambers from twenty yards.

The Ipswich club then drew level eleven minutes later via a thumping fifteen yard drive from Drager after the lanky striker ran on to a perfectly-placed cross from substitute Ryan McMaster.

Strikers were temporarily on the back foot but recovered to press in the last ten minutes.

A draw seemed the likely result before substitute winger Richter won a corner kick in the third minute of injury time.

His in-swinging delivery eluded Pascoe and a cluster of defenders and attackers to nestle in the far top corner of the goal and secure the three points for the hosts.

Strikers are next in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on cross-town rivals Olympic FC in the final of the Canale Travel Cup at Carmichael Park at Wynnum.

Brisbane Strikers 4 (Matt THURTELL 15’, Andy THOMPSON 32’, Michael ANGUS 34’, Jonti RICHTER 90+3’)
Western Pride 3 (Peter DRAGER 29’pen 72’, Chris SCOTT 61’)

What is crazy is that Richter was practising that exact thing with his left foot at half time!
Poor Pride, cracking goals from them. deserved more.

It was a mid week catch up game due to a delayed weather game earlier in the season and they played an entire youth team (think there was maybe 1 first teamer) as they have their first Semi final this weekend against the Strikers.

On another subject football queensland have struck again with no finals for 20's or 18's they are obviously trying to drive the players in these age groups back to BPL Comp. The under 16's should be playing finals. It is time some of these Morons in Football Queensland moved on as they are not interested in football in Queensland and everyone has had a gut full of there Ad Hoc policies.Palm Beach have been very ordinary leading into the final series.
