Flares at heavily populated events are fucking stupid

I don't remember their being any issues with the flares at future Music Festival and they had more flares than a WSW v Syd Derby. :lol:

Flare was during Metalica, was lit during the wrong song, should have waited until fight Fire with fire.

To be fair, it probably was.

The problem with the zero tolerance attitude to flares and the like, is that for any incident where someone is injured by them u can point to any number of other situations where no injuries occur. So banning them outright contradicts most folks experience of them. Clearly the simplistic approach does not work...they've been banned the whole time of the a-league yet they still crop up...

There is an appreciation of them so why not harness that and work with it rather than against it? Appoint a couple of people within supporter groups that want some pretty smoke based accompaniment ...which will likely be a minority of groups anyway...and license it. The sensible, minarchist approach.

Ideally, look for alternatives to the heat based flares and approve the use of those. Or if the hot burning ones are used, done so in a safer fashion than is the case now under the "just ban them" approach...ie safely hold them, dont throw them.

In general, zero tolerance approaches do not work unless folks are keen to see the continual march toward full blown Police State. Thats some trade off...are people really keen for things like facial recognition technology to enforce bans? And then once that door is opened! Not to mention the unintended consequences of fostering a society where folks are only capable of following Rules and increasingly less capable of acting responsibly.

In situations where things are banned outright, the only example folks have is of people doing things irresponsibly....the idiots are overrepresented. Licensing is a compromise approach where u will at least have a trained, sensible example being set.

Sport in Australia is treated differently, and I'm not just talking about soccer.

People can share a joint or hand out eckies at a concert with impunity - but god forbid should a professional footballer inhale, and then it's like the end of the world.

And what about those horrible swimmers staying up past their bed time?

I was told it was during Metallica, but all reports seem to say it was BMTH after all.

Or were there more than 1 flare during the night? I was over at Blink/Offspring so only have the knowledge of my drunken friends and the morning papers to go on.

More than 1 was set off.

The girl was allegedly injured by the flare at Metallica, however there were also several set off at BMTH.

I actually posted this last night in the music thread as I was watching AJ flip out (again) on twitter.

Thanks, Yeah i'm actually really pissed about the so called policing of Soundwave, I saw almost no police presents, security was helpful and attentive and not one sniffer dog or riot cop to be seen even though we were told we would be caught if doing anything illegal or against the conditions of entry.

I saw around 100 flask size bottles of vodka, rum and other burbuon bottles scattered around the venue, and at least 30 people openly rolling and smoking Joints (Cypress hill told them to) plus there was the flares to top it all off.

Now at the A-League I'm made to fee like a criminal because I love football, even though, I don't drink more than 3 beers, I don't engage in agressive behaviour and I (as a senior member of the Tifo Crew) do not condone the use of or lighting of flares within the Squadron.

Why are we treated like criminals at Football when we do not hurt anyone, yet Music festivals are free for alls?

Last year there were cops EVERYWHERE...that said, we still got a bit of weed in.

Completely agree about police presence, heaps less than previous years. Can't believe someone was actually stupid enough to rip a flare in a packed mosh pit

and regarding blacka's post, there is absolutely no problem with zero tolerance. Nothing to do with a police state, its just common fucking sense.

People shouldn't need to be told that lighting an incendiary device in an area full of people in close vicinity to each other is going to end badly. It's fucking stupid it makes your head hurt.

well to adequately enforce zero tolerance, the only way really is via a police state. Otherwise its mere window dressing...as we have now. The reason it stays as such, is because if it was REAL zero tolerance it would soon be rejected as over the top.

which is why we end up with the middle of the road approach...
