NSW numbers:

West Sydney - 14,285
Newcastle - 7,500
Sydney - 6,705
Central Coast - 3,100

That clearly shows that Sydney are the third biggest, or second smallest, team in NSW

Must definitely be under 10,000 if that's there aim.

They like to use the excuse they play in a big stadium that guarantees a seat hence no need for a membership while ignoring MV and Newcastle are in the same boat.

I think last year at around 8000 was the best ever.

Newcastle memberships cost like $20 bucks.

You can buy a Jerks membership with the loose change you accumulate at Friday night work drinks, so you can't really compare the two.

Not bad considering Sydney fc has a stadium twice as big as the wanderers and there is no members cap. Meaning there is no need to rush for memberships.

Aren't MV in the same boat? Poor excuse to be honest.

The difference is that MV started off in a tiny stadium with a membership cap. This helps drive membership behavior. Not making excuses for Sydney but with a membership base of 8,000 last year they were number 2 in terms of regular season attendance averages even though they were outgunned by membership by Victory and Newcastle (potentially WSW) because the fans show up. Pretty sure Melbourne Victory had a number of games where the attendance was lower than membership?

OK champ. Second highest average attendance last season and well on course for our highest membership number ever, despite our potential "base" being effectively halved with the introduction of WSW.

Best to remove Newcastle and their exceptionable numbers from the equation. GJ Hunter Sports Group (Tinkler and co). People around here have had MUCH MORE advanced and detailed discussions on this, including Pv4 and co. There's a slight myth on the actual difference of the wider packages, which are negligible, it's only the main one which is cheaper and actually relative to the Mariners one it wasn't THAT huge a difference I think (Though Mariners may be 'relatively cheap' too?). BUT 'the myth/perception' is part of it's fabulous marketing tool and that in-turn may snowball to more positive word-of-mouth and more members, especially if 'the product' is good.

ANYWAY, 8k is approaching levels far more appropriate for SFC and they seem set to increase on those levels and even pushing the magical 10k mark. Once they do that the collective A-League can feel a bit more confident in it's progress.

Brisbane too, seem awfully ambitious with their target, but have a much bigger struggle to attain it. I think their record too was set last season around 5-6k (?) or so. So hopefully they can push above that mark and then they too will be on a growth/improving trajectory.

Minimalistix wrote:

Minimalistix, this is an old discussion. It's EASY for MV fans to bash those north of the border on this and go ahead, have your cheap shots.

If you are serious about investigating it, then you will. Clearly north of the border are 'late bloomers' in this area, but ironically the success of Wanderers in this area too should 'help'. Nothing like a bit of 'local rivalry' or healthy competition to lift standards in many areas of the game, on and off the field. Wanderers are setting a new bar north of the border and SFC HAS to catch up now, otherwise they risk being left behind. But they ARE lifting their game now too, you can see (And it's after a few seasons of work on this, well before ADP and Wanderers!)!

Also, once SFC hit levels over 10k that will be entering more appropriate levels for their venue's capacity, with their approaching memberships around a third of capacity perhaps/hopefully. Also, this process may not see a 'large' additional increase in crowds as it may just be converting long time regular attendees into members, so existing crowd attendees into members - which isn't a bad thing ofc. Though hopefully there ARE new recruits, infact surely there are with this surge in numbers, so SFC are seeing their base extend and overall crowds increase or sustain a lil further. Which will be good for when ADP does leave, that more of a stronger base is established.

Odd, sorry, some reason I thought you a Victory fan. :s I guess 'usually' they have been coming from 'the south' preceding years, before Wanderers. In a way, Wanderers and the Jets are defying the stereotype or so-called culture where memberships/membership figures were 'not as important/valued' or whatever the excuse/reasons were.

But again, view it in a positive light and it's growing - Sydney FC have been on a growth curve past few seasons now. They obviously weren't doing the best/to their potential in the earlier A-League seasons and fans have argued the club dropped the ball in a way, losing momentum after their Season One success. But IF they push past the 10k barrier, that's a milestone for them and a sign of genuine, well earnt, progress.

And that can only be good for the league.

Let's hope Roar push to new record levels for that club too.

And that we finally hear from Glory about their memberships let alone their membership numbers!
