No month or two lay-off (lol) or anything. 4-6 dozen? Do you supply the whole neighbourhood with eggs? Or make a buttload of quiches or something? yeah the Mrs has customers.....but a lot of the eggs are used in our incubators for breeding she sells plenty of chickens and she shows them as well....and the stuff that is shit we kill and eat....

Changing topic slightly: what is the deal with recycling paper? The brother-in-law mentioned to me that it's more expensive (cost or environmentally, I'm not sure) to recycle paper than to make new paper.

The kids don't get emotionally attached to the animals? I'll never forget my uncle used to raise a couple of pigs at a time, and his daughter decided she wanted to look after one of them. Thing was they used to rear them then eat them. We ate Piglet for xmas dinner one year and my cousin's been vegetarian ever since. And that was a good 10-12 years ago

Yeah I'm legit clueless on the topic. You'd imagine if you added up all the emissions to do this and that, it may not be worth recycling paper. EDIT: yeah, I was meaning actually what you do with your random bits of mail you want to discard. Would love for someone to get a definite answer though, would be interesting. I've read a few different websites that have very conflicting views. I've just decided to avoid all confusion, I'm going to buy a shredder and use the shredded paper as the starter for my woodfire  Edited by pv4: 23/7/2013 01:24:18 PM

The amount of energy and water used to recycle paper is just as bad for the environment, you're just taking solace in the fact that you're not lopping down another tree.

well it's great to see lots of people having a crack.......there are some great seed sites on the web with heirloom veggies that taste better and are very interesting so you can get the kids into it....like purple, white yellow carrots, weird pumpkins ETC

Not really a factor as they use specific plantation forests. Having worked in the industry I can tell you there isn't a great deal of environmental difference between recycled and virgin fibre copy paper. Recycled is more expensive as it's a more complex process. Draw your conclusions from that. Edited by thupercoach: 23/7/2013 03:09:24 PM

So if I have a random piece of paper that I do not want to keep confidential, what is the best way for me to dispose of it? General waste or recycling? And is shredding and using in fire better than those two?

You options are - paper waste which will result in conversion, not necessarily into copy paper but for something less precise line cardboard or toilet paper. Burying the thing in landfill helps sequester carbon, and if you believe carbon is bad for us then it's another good way. I'd say just put it in paper recycling.

AFAIK it still goes on, but not for the copy paper industry which is very regulated, especially here in Australia. I think in Tassie they are still chopping down old growth trees for furniture and the like but I am not certain of this.
