Shit about to get real up in NQ; Quote:STORM surges and flooding are expected to lash far north Queensland as cyclone Ita brings 280km/h winds, with 9000 people directly in its path. Weather forecasters predict Ita will make landfall north of Cooktown on Friday night. The category four system is expected to bring massive storm surges, predicted to be 1.5 metres bigger than usual high tides, in the coastal town of about 2300 people, 300 kilometres north of Cairns. “The coastal storm surge - don’t underestimate it,” Premier Campbell Newman told reporters at Queensland’s emergency headquarters in Brisbane. Cyclone Ita was about 470km northeast of Cooktown, travelling towards the coast about 14km/h, the Bureau of Meteorology said in a Thursday morning update. The bureau’s regional director Robb Webb said Ita would move slower than Cyclone Yasi in 2011 and Cyclone Larry in 2006. This would mean slower winds, but also much heavier downpours in coastal communities, including Cairns. “It is a significant system,” Mr Webb said. Ita is expected to intensify into a category four later on Thursday. “That puts it at the high end of the category four system as it approaches the coast,” Mr Webb said. “At this stage we are forecasting category four but we are watching closely for any signs of any more rapid development. “That would put it in a similar category to Cyclone Larry.” Mr Newman is flying to Cairns and Cooktown on Thursday afternoon, having cut short an Asian trade trip. Port Douglas boatie John Nagan, 70, said he planned a cyclone party. “We’ll get a couple of cartons of beer and a few bottles of white wine for the ladies,” he told AAP on board his yacht, which he plans to tether to mangroves in a river. Some residents north of Port Douglas are already evacuating their homes, but Mr Newman said his concern was for people camping in remote parts of the peninsula. He said a helicopter could monitor the coast to check whether people were actually leaving. A cyclone watch has been declared for areas up to 300km inland, including Kalinga, Laura, Palmerville and Chillagoe. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/cyclone-ita-heading-to-far-north-queensland-could-become-category-five-disaster/story-e6frg6nf-1226879686114 -PB

-PB You must have seen a few Cat 5's? Can someone explain why a Cat 5 storm in Australia is defined as above 150 knots and in the western pacific it's defined as above 137 knots?

Yeah been through a few, have ridden my bike it Cat 3's etc which is always fun. Usually people don't really care bout 1s and 2s, you can go down the beach in that shit and catch some decent waves. 3s are bit of gustier wind that can lead to down trees and lines, 4s and 5s are when you pucker your butthole. Not sure as to why our definition is "stronger" than that of the West Pacific either, possibly due to the difficulty so to speak of such storms occurring in that region? -PB

Far out, predictions have been made of 300ml of rain every 6 hours for at least the next 24 hours, not to mention that at its core this cyclone is stronger than Yasi was (300kph gusts now). Shit. -PB

The Atacama Desert is on the west coast of south america Its possible its a desert similar to how a lot of western Australia is facing the westerly direction

Some of my family friends in Tully decided to stay during Yasi. They said the sound was like boarding a plane out on the tarmac, multiply the volume a couple of times, add in the smacks and clunks of debris hitting the house and make it last for about 3 hours. Do nae want one of those to hit a large town/city.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

this misty rain sure is annoying
Its not going to register in any rain gauges but its making the laundry hard to do -bar paying 5 bucks at the laundromat for a dryer, and its going to make the cars dirty as well
