First stage of voting for the new Kiwi flag is complete, this one will face off against the current one in March. I don't mind it, but I'd like it so much better if the fern didn't violate the rule of thirds. It just looks slapped on. ABC wrote:Silver fern tops New Zealand flag referendum

New Zealanders have chosen a silver fern on a black-and-blue background as their preferred option if the South Pacific nation decides to dump Britain's Union Jack from its national banner, officials say.
The design beat four other contenders in a nation-wide referendum, according to preliminary results released by the New Zealand Electoral Commission.
Simply titled "Silver Fern (Black, White and Blue)", the design will go head-to-head with the existing flag in a second referendum in March next year.
"While this is a preliminary result, New Zealanders can now turn their attention to deciding whether to keep the current flag, or replace it," deputy prime minister Bill English said.
Prime minister John Key has led the push for reform, saying the existing ensign is a colonial relic that is too easily confused with Australia's flag.
He had previously nominated the winning design as his favourite, describing the silver fern as an instantly recognisable symbol of New Zealand.
The flag and an almost identical banner from the same designer, Kyle Lockwood, were clear winners in the five-way race, each receiving more than 550,000 first-choice votes of the 1.5 million ballots cast.
The second-placed design simply changes the colour of one section of the flag's background from black to red.
However, polling indicates the current flag is still on track to beat any contender in next year's run-off referendum.
Formally adopted in 1902, it has a Union Jack in the right corner alongside four red stars representing the Southern Cross on a dark blue background.
Once part of the British Empire, New Zealand is now independent, although Queen Elizabeth II remains head of state.
However, her power is seen as largely symbolic, and changing a flag is seen by some as helping cut lingering colonial ties.
Opponents of a flag change say New Zealanders have fought and died under the existing banner and also criticised the NZ$26 million ($24.25 million) cost of the referendum.

I actually saw one for real in someone's when I was over there for the Nix game, someone was obviously rooting for that design. I have to say I'm coming around to it, and I think the Kiwi electorate will too in the months they have before the vote.
The Phoenix fans had a version of the Red Peak flag in their colours in the game in Auckland, very clever.

Mrs and I were talking about Straya becoming a Republic today. Then it obviously turned to what the flag would be if we were to become a Republic. One idea neither of us have seen yet that seemed basic enough is the below. Thoughts?

I think the Australian Flag shouldn't borrow too much from the Aboriginal Flag, because then what will the Aboriginal Flag be?

http://www.smh.com.au/national/southern-horizon-favoured-for-australias-new-national-flag-survey-shows-20160126-gmdzwz.htmlI like the Southern Horizon flag. Elements of the current flag with our sporting colours, nice and simple. Definitely the best of that lot at any rate. The one that placed second with the red boomerang on it... I appreciate the intent but it's an utter eyesore, we'd be a laughing stock if that was ever run up flagpoles in this country.

I prefer the current flag anyway, just think the Southern Horizon is the best of the group proposed in the article. And sure they're fairly similar, different enough not to be a problem though for me. It's just nice to see the alternatives if we were to have a flag vote, personally I think it's one of the better options. A bit like football kits I guess, people have different views on which ones look nice! :d

Idk, the extent of the meaning was give the Aboriginal flag a genuine show, but incorporate the green/gold that has become symbolic with our nation.

Edited by paladisious: 26/1/2016 10:51:49 PM I understand what you're saying here. I guess the idea behind using the Aboriginal Flag so much is the Aboriginal Flag IS the Australian Flag.

Our current flag is a joke. Such an overhang to being a colony of the UK.
Ask anyone from overseas - they are incredulous as to why we insist on having another country's flag on it.
Utterly embarrassing.
I like the Southern Horizon flag.

Can't we just take the Union Jack off the flag and increase the size of the federation star?

I like the Southern Horizon flag, though don't really care if we change it or not (similar to the Republic debate)

For those that "don't really care" about the flag or the republic, if they came to a referendum (where you'd obviously be obliged to vote in) would you vote for change? I'm curious as I definitely sense those that say "don't care" about same-sex marriage being recognised are actually against it but don't want to say so. Edited by mcjules: 27/1/2016 01:37:58 PM

It's a good looking flag, I'd wrap myself in it when I'm fighting Asians for damn sure
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Edited by mcjules: 27/1/2016 01:37:58 PM I'm not for or against as, admittedly being selfish here, there's nothing for me to really gain out of voting for both sides. Would be interesting to see if there's any scientific or economic data on a Republic being better off after than before. If there is then it's my ignorance and I just haven't read it yet. Gay Marriage is a bit different. Will probably vote yes due to the evidence provided and such but if it's a no vote i'll still wake up and get a coffee in the morning.

Edited by mcjules: 27/1/2016 01:37:58 PM Yes, there's certainly a sense of pining for the monarchy and the "good old days" of the 1950s with this group of non-progressives. On a positive note however its heartening to see they realise their anti-social stance by being too ashamed to publicly state it, and rather hide under the "dont care" rug. The first step toward changing social norms is to make the citizens realise their values are no longer socially acceptable to communicate to others. This does prevent the spread of such outdated and toxic attitudes. Edited by trident: 27/1/2016 02:16:07 PM
