Yes, there's certainly a sense of pining for the monarchy and the "good old days" of the 1950s with this group of non-progressives.

On a positive note however its heartening to see they realise their anti-social stance by being too ashamed to publicly state it, and rather hide under the "dont care" rug.

The first step toward changing social norms is to make the citizens realise their values are no longer socially acceptable to communicate to others. This does prevent the spread of such outdated and toxic attitudes.

No need to twist my words ricey. The people opposed to the republic or flag are not necessarily "anti-social". The gay marriage debate is another matter.

(Red) Australian earth is red. (Black)Not all Australia's people are Aboriginal or black. The sun isn't half green.

I dont mind red or yellow from the aboriginal flag, but black, no thanks.

I think there is a misconception about what a change to a republic actually means.

It can be done with no meaningful change other than removing the formality of the Queen appointing the G-G on the advice of the PM. That is the minimalist change.

You could go maximalist with a directly elected president, but that is not necessary. With the Australia Act in 1986 we became, for all practical intents and purposes a republic in practice. We just need to go that step further and formalise it.

And out of the woodwork comes an actually vexiologically sound design that I somewhat like:

The Unity Flag. You can check out it's website for more info on it.

Adding another point to the Commonwealth Star sounds rather pointless to me, though. (Pun intended)

Maybe the Southern Cross there instead?

Actually scratch all that, the stars on the Eureka Flag are eight pointers, so this one is a go.

I wonder though what green would look like in place of the white on the right side?

I'm not for or against as, admittedly being selfish here, there's nothing for me to really gain out of voting for both sides. Would be interesting to see if there's any scientific or economic data on a Republic being better off after than before. If there is then it's my ignorance and I just haven't read it yet.

Gay Marriage is a bit different. Will probably vote yes due to the evidence provided and such but if it's a no vote i'll still wake up and get a coffee in the morning.

There are plenty of good, principled reasons for a republic and gay marriage - but purely economically, a yes vote for either would certainly be a good thing (if only marginally). It may seem like a long bow to be drawing, but gay marriage would mean consequent celebrations as well as more weddings, and all the spending and economic activity that goes with that. The updating of all sorts of relevant info as well as the usual surge of patriotism that would result from a transition to a republic would have a similar effect.

In the 90s Keating also made the argument that becoming a republic would improve our relationships with Asia (and thus our economic ties), since many of those nations and their leaders still associate Australia with Britain and colonialism. That's obviously pretty speculative and is more difficult to prove, but it does make intuitive sense.
