The important thing is to remember that they don't expect you to be Olympic Decathlon gold medalists. Little things like that credit in a maths competition or having your first aid certificate, getting most improved player at your football club things like that will pad out your achievements now. In ten years time you'll be going "Bachelor's degree in ballsuckery", "RSA", etc. so don't worry about it.

You're nowhere near "fucked". I didn't get a job until I finished yr12. Job hunting isn't meant to be easy, that's why there's so many fuckwits on the dole. In fact, it's a skill and trait you want to develop at your age. Apply at all the usual suspects (brands and chains you already know) but network with mates, ask if they're bosses/managers are looking for more staff. But I know how you feel because I'm nearly finished Uni and have little industry experience to add to my resume.

As someone who has hired many staff over the years in retail, keep your resume short and to the point; I pretty much agree with everything Heiny has said. Try to keep it to one A4 page (plus a brief cover letter to show you're not a complete r'tard, say 1/3 to 1/2 page).

Don't include a long list of academic and/or sporting/hobby achievements - no one in retail really gives a fuck. But by all means include a list of interests, hobbies and even what you're studying at school. It gives the hirer an idea of who you are, and can even persuade them (of course it can dissuade them but that's a lot less likely). At the end of the day you'll be earning minimum wage, workers are a dime a dozen. Academic success doesn't necessarily correlate to common sense and a good work ethic outside the classroom. In fact, some of my best staff have been high school dropouts.

Be sure to include your DOB and contact details clearly at the top of the resume. Some retailers like younger staff because they're cheap; the 'community service' of hiring young people is just a symptom.

Most importantly make sure you know the trading hours of the store you're writing to and reconcile them with your availability. In retail the minimum shift for casual employees is 3 hours pay, so no use saying you're available after school (say 3pm) if the shop closes at 5pm.

What I look for in a good resume is on one page:
-Contact details and DOB
-Interests
-Personality
-Work History
-References (from past employers and/or community figures such priests or group leaders. Letters from year advisors are usually just pre-written generic tripe, should be used as last resort IMO).
-How the resume is formatted (presentation). Although not super-dooper important, those who don't format, to me, just say they aren't organised and/or take no care in their work. In saying that, don't overdo with presentation. Don't include pictures and try to stay away from fancy borders and fonts. Keep it simple.

Bold headings, underline subheadings if you need them, times new roman text. The most fancy thing you'll do is center the text :lol:
