Disapointing, this should surely be the lowest, although some dead rubbers on MD3 may be similar, great crowd in melbourne though.

The likely play-off for third in the group between Oman and Kuwait in Newcastle, at the same time as Aus/SK, is surely going to be the smallest of the tournament.

Had completely forgotten that MD3 is at the same time, thats a very good point then.

Canberra showing up yesterday with a healthy 12k in the rain, then BAM back to 5k? I suppose 2 games in 2 days is a big ask for a small city... Still you'd think they'd be desperate to show why an A-league club should be strongly considered in the city. Should get a big crowd to their QF

Would've thought Jordan v Iraq tomorrow in Brisbane will give today's Canberra turnout a run for its money.

Mind you, wiki says Iraqi community in Australia is estimated as high as 80,000. They mentioned tonight that the Iranian diaspora here is 70,000.

They're all in Sydney and Melbourne though.

Seriously, given the small amount of venues required, you might be on to something.

Every previous edition of the Asian Cup bar 2004 and 2007 were all hosted in countries or areas smaller than Victoria, most notably 1992 which was all in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Who needs all that flying around or different time zones if you can avoid it?

Low drawing games could be at AAMI Park, Kardinia Park in Geelong and an upgraded Morshead Park in Ballarat, Socceroos games and other higher drawing games at Docklands, and maybe the Semis and Final at the MCG. Boom, all venues no more than an hour by train apart. Teams and fans would love it.

NSW could very easily do one on their own with just the venues used by the four A-League teams plus Homebush and WIN Stadium, as could South-East Qld with Suncorp, Robina, Ballymore, QE II and perhaps an upgraded Perry Park. Perth and Adelaide might struggle with just Subiaco and NIB and Adelaide Oval, Homebush and Marden respectively between them, added to their state governments' lack of shits given for football.

Any state government worth their salt should at least approach the FFA to go it alone for a bid in the future.

Would be a massive opportunity lost in terms of 'growing' the game. Not to mention spectator burn out, with basically a couple of matches everyday in more or less the one population centre.

No thanks.

Lower bowl at ANZ almost completely sold out for roos v oman. Thats approx 45,000. Should be looking at 60,000+ for a Tuesday night in Sydney.

Three roos games to get 120,000+ would be a good effort. If the crowd in sydney gets closer to 70,000 you could be looking at 150,000 for the three games. Which would be pretty spectacular.

---

Also should be looking at 20,000 in Newcastle tonight with CAT1, 3, Pal active, and Family bay sold out.

With the Palistinian active area seating 600 people they are going to have decent support.

The Category one areas would hold the bulk of the fans probably 10-12k, Cat3 the least 2-3K

and we have Schwarzer living in the past saying its all about Europe. Time has moved on, and we can be proud of the depth of the Asian Cup and our team.

Not only that, but the pendulum has shifted toward Asia and Africa. We need the players to improve their psychological approach to European nations and we'll start to see better results against them.

Japan obviously gets people interested but I've heard from a lot of people at least down in Melbourne who are going to get behind the Palestinians.

All the crowds are odd, normally when I watch a HAL match I am generally within the 2k area of what the crowd is. However this tournament has confused the fuck out of me.

It is as if the HAL attendances are inflated :o
