SFC isn't such great a facility. Old and getting frayed at the edges. All the $ seems to be being spent on the SCG and whatever they call the place where the AFL Traffic Cones Franchise play. Plus all that money Abbott is throwing at Brookvale.

Not talking about the facilities, I'm talking about the atmosphere. even when the socceroos played the stadium felt half empty. it used to fit 100k for the Olympics but has been downsized. but it still feels too big and hollow. And your too far from the ground Too many problems. I need to go to bed.

Sydcro agrees with me - if the Qatar/Iran game at Sydney got 22k, then there was 25-30k there for Japan/UAE. Either scanners weren't working tonight or the Iran game was a mistake.

sydneycroatia58 wrote:Yeah no fucking way was that only 19k. was there for the match thought 25k tbh. BUT the turnout overall from Sydney is crap. In one breath we complain about not getting the World Cup however seeing the crowd last night on a Friday night which was embarrassing is a prime example why we didn't deserve it. I am genuinely nervous for the semi on Monday night at ANZ since Australia is playing at the same time. If there isn't over 50k for that then us Sydneysiders should shut the fuk up when slagging off crowd numbers in other states especially Victoria. The world is watching Sydney.

I would agree on 25k. Stadium was definitely not a quarter full.
Still, while it might be a little disappointing, put 19.5k into AAMI and suddenly this forum jizzes.
Starting to think it's not the crowd number it's the atmosphere

19k might sound bit low but even if the crowd was really 25k (max) then i still think that is disappointing.
Sure everyone might have already left to start their long weekends and ticket prices have now started to rise for the knockout stages (I hate to think how the semi will go in terms of attendance) but surely anyone who would have been paying attention to this tournament would have been eager to attend.
This crowd and crowds to WSW and SFC just confirms to me that Sydney is an events city.
Sydney people don't go to the football (or any other sport for that matter) to watch the game or soak up the atmosphere. They go because it's the cool thing to do.
They don't go to watch quality games, they go to watch hype games.
I don't want to go overboard since while 19k is below average it is certainly not woeful so there is some hope for the football community in Sydney. The people i could overhear talking around me were well informed about the two teams. Contrast that to the Socceroos game where the guys behind me started talking about Hayne, the Eels and when deciding on who Australia's man of the match was they described it as giving "Dally M" points.

We've cracked the 500,000 goal with four games to go
503,295 people have attended the 28 games with an average of 17,974.

Esp how they complained so much about the newcastle semi that it became a news story. Yet the crowd at japan v Palestine in newcastle was nearly as big as a Sydney quarter final. Self centred bigots.

The goal was to have more than 500k. 140k is probably a stretch but could be done if Australia make the final.

Yep, but the goal was to make the Semi's of the Asian Cup, now with the draw we have... it is to win it. The tournament has been a success no matter what happens from here on =d>

1 week ago I predicted we'd get 650k in the tournament
Iran getting knocked out will hurt the crowd for the semi. That said, there are a shit load of Iraqi's in Sydney and Melbourne, and I'd imagine that that there would be thousands of Melbourne Iraqi's driving to Sydney in addition to the Sydney Iraqi fans.
From here, I predict.
23,000 Australia vs UAE at Newcastle 30,000-40,000 South Korea vs Iraq at Sydney If Australia make the final, 80,000 at Sydney 3rd Playoff in Newcastle, 15,000
That's ~150k more to come, we're at 503k, so we can still reach 650k+ total.
Also I just bought tickets for the final, PAX is 44,700
