Going to be interesting to see glory members numbers.

After the shit they did this year in hoping for discounted memberships but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Joffa, just a note - some of the data above, from the 2013/14 table, was not quite up-to-date and with further information we have brought some of the sub-totals and so over-all total, closer to what the A-League stated was the overall member tally for that particular season:
http://www.a-league.com.au/article/club-members-the-heart-and-soul-of-a-league/1r497ylftwd1o1vml36sxjig01

A new issue now arises, of somehow 62 excess members in our anecdotal, patchwork, list. I presume our Phoenix and/or another club figure/s are 'rounded up' figures or taken from anecdotal or projected claims, hence the discrepancy of '50'. We did well, to get as close as we did, relying on inconsistent, unreliable and at times, unknown guesswork, in getting member numbers from clubs. Some clubs quite transparent, open and proud to share via active counters (Heart etc) but others was like extracting blood from stone (Phoenix etc). Thankfully the new member counter on the FFA's own Official A-League website, brings instant uniformity, transparency and better access to measurement against performance targets and prior records. The A-League have obviously cottoned on that a section of fans are interested in this and it makes for good positive propaganda, especially with the current growth trends across the board (Jets are shaky ground now, though :/).

Club members the heart and soul of A-League
Monday, 23 June 2014 - Staff

'...

If you-re a member, you-re one of 96,641 people who have set a record this Season 9. That number is an all-time high for club membership and a massive 32% increase on Season 8.

...

The percentage growth figures for individual clubs speak for themselves - Wanderers up 141%, Mariners up 68%, Roar up 52%.

Meanwhile, Victory added 19% to their member ranks to have over 22,000 paid-up and proud supporters, the biggest membership in the competition.

Sydney FC cracked the 10,000-mark for the first time by lifting membership by 28% and Adelaide United jumped by 23% while the Jets continue to have over 10,000 proud Novocastrians signed up on their membership roster.

Clear growth as well for Heart, Glory and Phoenix has helped Season 9 to be the most successful and vibrant season yet for club membership.

...'

Estimates, based on above, utilising the more well sourced 2013/14 figures, a calculator and here:
http://www.percentagecalculator.net/ (My maths isn't great and/or I'm rusty)

Feel free to double-check my results or investigate for yourselves!

Season 2012/13
Adelaide United: ~5,200?
Brisbane Roar: ~5,337?
Central Coast Mariners: ~3,548?
Melbourne Heart: 6,583
Melbourne Victory: ~18,505? (Not sure where the 18,767 figure comes from? +Pet Members?!)
Newcastle Jets: *11,007
Perth Glory : 5,000 (-ish, Capped during that season, due to stadium renovation)
Sydney FC: ~8,470?
Wellington Phoenix: ~3,000?!
Western Sydney Wanderers: ~7,014?

TOTAL: ~73,500?! (MAXIMUM, that leaves room for a 31.6% increase to be added, for the 2013/14 season)

I think I'm still some way off, as reports of the membership level WSW achieve vary greatly from between 6,500 right up to 7,500. My estimate, going from the stated percentage increase for WSW in 2013/14, sits around inbetween.

For some reason, Adelaide United rate a bit higher, even though anecdotally, they shouldn't be and some fans had them around 4,500 for that season. I just got that rough figure from again, deducing from the percentage increase for AU.

Flipside, Brisbane Roar had as many as 6,500 Members in Season 2012/13, according to anecdotal from fans. But the FFA states a '52%' increase, where a 52% increase with the outcome of the 'provided' 8112 figure for 13/14, means their 12/13 figure must've been sitting in the mid 5ks, as I estimated via the provided percentage. It's possible there are variables like Pet Memberships again - or perhaps Roar's 'Lite Members' aren't included in the FFA's totals? :-k

I struggled to squeeze in Phoenix there. Was going to list then a couple hundred lower, but some anecdotal kept re-inforcing they were 3k this season and that could could still match in the above configuration.

Again, I came to these results, via the guidelines of FFA's stated percentage increases and the reasonably well source 2013/14 figures above, as too FFA article stated Season 2013/14 total. I wonder how close my deductions are to, the truth? :-k

It's entirely possible that the FFA's Media Department 'rounds-up' some of these percentages, as the point of the article was to spruik the A-League's growth and note how Heart, Glory and Phoenix's percentage gains were not mentioned and also the spin surround Newcastle - who fell short of their record by a thousand, but 'still topped 10k' - which was great, but if we talk in-terms of percentage increase, they were technically down. FTR I checked Heart, due to their reliable figures, and their percentage increase was around a quite reasonable 10%. And it would not remind me if Glory's real numbers were indeed rather stagnant that period. Phoenix too. Both Glory and Phoenix only really pulled their fingers out to grow by another thousand each, in more recent times.

When you consider the element of natural growth going up against the scandals at Perth and issues in Brisbane this will see memberships even out.

I think what will make the difference next season for memberships will come down purely to the marquees. 2 or 3 big guns will be required if we're to make any significant increase. I stated earlier that 130k was a possibility but only if we get in the big guns to freshen things up. Otherwise i'd be tipping for 120k.

I think it will be about the same although I see Perth and or Wellington maybe declining and Wanderers and Jets maybe improving.

Good to see Central Coast are Central Coast and will play 13 home games in Gosford. (no north sydney/manly games)

this might give a slight bump but we have to wait and see if a 3rd Sydney derby will be played at ANZ stadium and whether two Melbourne derbies are played at Etihad.

On the plus side, Perth doesn't have many members anyway, so losing half of them won't effect the league too bad :D

I think/believe that there will be a slight growth.

As for whether or not I renew my membership, I am not to sure (I will most likely not). I am seriously contemplating giving the Australian way a go and just wait until the Final Series. I am continually being told "we are not in Europe", so as the saying goes "when in Rome, do as the Roman's do".

Tipping a decline. Much of last years growth came from Newcastle and a bit from perth and with their shit form itll be a slight drop.

Newcastle barely reached their previous target last year, but i agree they will drop a bit this year. As will Perth for sure. Melbourne City will probably drop a bit too as will most certainly Brisbane.

Victory will increase as will Sydney FC and probably Adelaide.

It's still too early to call but I may have to revise my previous prediction. The climate isn't exactly ecstatic and i have a feeling the league probably won't pick up any great marquees which unfortunately is the boost it needs.

We may get a pleasant surprise in months to come closer to the start of the season, but much of the feeling around football has been negative since the Asian Cup Final win.

To me much will depend on how the league is viewed and as I see it right now many sides are no where close to finalising their squads and are we going to see any marquees ....

Roar, Jerks, Mariners, Drive Bys, Sheep Shager's, Glory Boys all have a number of players to add ...

I can see a small fall in numbers unless we get squads ready and some new marquees ...

Ok so to give a comparison, City managed to hit 1440 two weeks earlier last year. So they are already a fortnight behind.

I'm also noticing a drop in activity in the forums in the last couple of weeks. And looking back at some of the threads from this time last year there was a lot more. The world cup may have had something to do with that I guess.

I get it that it's the off season, but there really hasn't been that much exciting football news recently. This will certainly have an impact on membership drive in general.

2015/16 memberships were released yesterday.

Last season's memberships were released in the first week of June.

There's no point analysing numbers in isolation. Up to 1,552 now btw.

Anyone for some early membership figure predictions? I'm happy to start tracking each club's numbers like we did last season but feel it's still a bit early.

My overall guess as it stands is we'll be lucky to reach 114k. Most likely just under unless extreme AFL tactics are used.

Membership Predictons For 2015/2016:

Adelaide United = 11,000 (+ 15%)
Brisbane Roar = 7,000 (- 42%)
Mariners = 6,250 (no noticeable change)
Melbourne City = 10,000 (- 15%)
Melbourne Victory = 26,000 (+ 7.5%) - Not sure what their cap is but might reach it.
Newcastle Jets = 8,500 (- 15%)
Perth Glory = 5,000 (- 20%)
Sydney FC = 12,650 (+ 10%)
Wellington Phoenix = 5,000 (+19.5%)
Western Sydney Wanderers = 18,706 (No change as will hit cap)

Total predicted membership figures = 110,106

Fair call then. I still think City will struggle to reach last year's figure. With no new marquee, no Villa hype nor changes at management level and a pretty boring season last year, i'd be surprised if they get much over the 10k mark.

You would think the WSW are going to want to make some noise prior to the renewals next week. Redmayne type signings will only alienate fans away that are on the fence I imagine.

That's fine, but like i've already stated, considering everything, i doubt they will get more than 10k this year. Of course if they decide to sell the memberships at 50% to last season then i'm sure they may get more. But if they are being priced at a similar price i can't see them getting more than 80% of what they achieved last season.

Hope to be proven wrong though. Need two strong melbourne teams in the comp.

Automatic renewals for WSW kick in next Wednesday, so we should know fairly soon after that what kind of retention rate for this season.

Do you guys still have people on a waiting list for memberships? How does your renewals work - if you decline to renew, the first on the waiting list gets that spot?

Yes, we've got nearly 2.5k on the waiting list. My understanding is they have to renew their supporter membership during the 3 weeks renewal period and when renewal closes supporter members are offered seating as it comes free based on their position on the waiting list.

The Roar start their pre-season tomorrow for the game against Liverpool on the 17th. It will be a big night, and I guess there'll be a lot who check out the playing strength of that game on whether they'll renew.

Interesting times ahead. As mentioned above, we have some room in the squad, but Aloisi needs to get his act together pronto.

When I watched some of the highlights of the Villareal match they played against a few weeks ago, I was really quite surprised the way they were playing. Some really good quality football. And for a second thought it must have been Aloisi's doing early on. Then realised he was in the stands and still hadn't taken the reigns in the coaching department.

Will be very interesting to see how he manages it. Still sounds like an absolutely awful decision (smells like job for the boys type of appointment). The style that Brisbane is use to playing up until the start of last year was very attractive to watch and very much the opposite of what Aloisi was like at Heart, where he successfully managed to bore everyone with his defensive tactics which unfortunately didn't pay off as his defence was rather shite too.

I'm very interested to see how they perform next season. Within a few games you will be able to tell what type of strategy he will be implementing. Brisbane require results but they also have to play attractive football. Something I very much doubt Aloisi can bring them. Time will tell i guess. One thing is for sure, if he fails miserably at Brisbane, it will be the end of his coaching career.
