That's the thing though. We are assuming from past experiences but since the last WC severe cuts from the cronies have forced SBS to change their approach.

No idea why they don't milk the shit out of these events though. NFI.

at youth level those are three sides that tend to be physically and technically well developed. So not expecting much in terms of results

hoping for a good performance though

We should be both physically and technically ready, this group of players have been competing together against men in the Canberra NPL this season, training 5 days a week together at the AIS, had full exposure to the NC and most have had international experience not just in friendly games but tournament conditions. They are also travelling to Argentina next week for preparation games so lets not hide behind anything the expectation is to be able to compete with the best in the world in all areas of the game.

its not about hiding

look at the results at the u20 youth world cup this year. Do you really believe there is much correspondence between how well a team did and how good that teams senior team will be?

if the same groups of players played each other at 25 I would expect our team to do better

so if we get any results at all in this group it would be remarkable

With that group I can't expect us to pick up a point, but I hope they give it everything though.

My problem is I can't recall too much that really impressed me as to the current crop looks the works.

Can anyone recall some player that stood out?

The likes of Armenakas, Brimmer, Arzani and Cameron Joice all look promising.

But then again there are many talented players and give them the stage to shine I hope they take the chance.

You seem to have taken exception to the word hiding.

Let me make this clear for you, i did not mention results you did.

What i have provided you with is information on this group of players and the targeted outcomes.

Now to answer your question, the purpose of the underage national teams is to produce international standard players so one way of measuring your success is the number of players who progress to your senior team. If you have no correlation between u20 and the senior team then you are doing something wrong.

I agree the goal should be producing senior players

my point is that the correlation between results at youth tournaments and quality of senior team is weak.

I would be surprised if we get good results at this tournament but I am optimistic about this cohorts future

the last cohort of u20s that failed to make the world cup I think are the equal or better of the previous u20s despite worse results. A lot of players playing in the a league from this cohort are impressing me!

I remember watching these guys play the USA and England in the US at the end of last year. I remember not being that impressed with Armenakas, he seemed slow to move the ball compared to the others, wanting to spend a lot of time with the ball sizing up options in the last third when everyone else was pass, pass, pass. he also seemed like an early developer for his age, a big kid, and I wondered how good he would be when everyone else catches up to him. Hopefully I'm wrong.

On the other hand I think Joice is an excellent prospect. He is a long way from being fully physically developed, though he is pretty speedy but gets himself into great scoring positions and seems to be able to find the net. he came off the bench against England and equalised with a great poacher's goal. I think there are a couple of posters here from Newy and would be interested in their thoughts.

What age group is the kid from Watford, Zaine X....? Is he the age of the guys playing in the tournament now or the age of Joice, Brimmer etc?
