The Joeys preparations for October’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile have continued with an encouraging 1-1 draw against USA in France overnight.

Melbourne Victory’s Lucas Derrick put the Australians ahead in the 64th minute with a smashing effort in the Lafarge Foot Avenir youth tournament.

However the Americans equalised with two minutes of regulation time left at the Stade de Beaublanc in Limoges to earn USA a point.

The Australians were the stronger of the two sides, holding control of the game for large periods.

Tony Vidmar’s ball-playing style gave the Joeys a number of opportunities early on, but for all the play in the middle they were unable to find a killer ball to penetrate the defence.

But the high-tempo game almost played the Australians into trouble, with a sliding goal line clearance from Aaron Reardon keeping the scores level heading into the half-time break.

It took 20 minutes into the second half for the Joeys to get their goal.

A solid sequence of passes found Derrick on the edge of the box, before taking a touch, composing himself, and curling the ball into the far right corner of the net to give Australia a 1-0 lead.

But it didn’t last. In the end, the Aussies were undone by a turnover at the back in the 88th minute and Gallardo took advantage to equalise the match 1-1.

The Joeys continue their Lafarge Foot Avenir campaign tomorrow against Stade Rennais FC, before taking on France U-17 on Sunday.

What I like about our U16s is that they can play a killer ball. Australian's are freaking awful at killer passes.
I make passes in my all age team that Harps and Slater would lose their minds over, purely because most Uassies at the top level seem to completely lack the ability to see thinks unfolding and play a risky, 'outside the box' pass.

yeah I wish more skeptics watched the u16s

the u17s are a step up but the u16s are mindblowing by aussie standards!

There are some who watch them with closed minds. All they see is what is on the scoreboard.


And of course there are some who have never seen them and would be astonished.


Off forum apart from FFA staff coaches, I know nobody involved in NPL football who has any idea about the underage Aussie national teams. It is one of the great things about this forum - the streams to these games.

By your estimate how many coaches have educated in the new curriculum ?

Agree, although it was very dominating match for the Socceroos, most of our players were forced to take an extra touch or play on their prefered foot unlike the under 15s whom have faster handling speed and are able to play 1 touch with both feet more often.

The Olyroos play Turkey 3 30am eastern standard time, 7 30pm Europe.

at olyroos level the balance between results and performances probably shifts a little to the results end of the spectrum because by that age they should be reasonably developed physically and tactically
