Barca4Life wrote:Quote:Joeys head to Cambodia for AFF U-16 championships Joeys coach Tony Vidmar has named a 23-player squad that will contest the 2016 AFF U-16 Youth Championship in Cambodia later this month. The squad includes all 18 scholarship holders at FFA’s Centre of Excellence, with Western Sydney Wanderers and Marconi Stallions contributing two players and the Emerging Jets one. Australia’s U-17 national squad will depart for Phnom Penh over the weekend for a pre-tournament camp before their first match on 10 July. Having been seeded third for the ASEAN tournament the Joeys were drawn in Group A and have been pitted against Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. The top two teams from each pool will progress straight to the semi-finals, with the Joeys hoping to improve on last year’s third place finish. FFA Technical Director Peter de Roo said the tournament would bring into fruition the style of play the squad have been working on for the last five months, while also providing an opportunity for players outside their Canberra training environment. “The expectation is that we are going to further develop and work on our playing style,” said de Roo. “This tournament is a great opportunity to test ourselves and our playing style against Asian opposition. “We want to take a good look at our players and where they are at as well as those that are not in our environment.” - De Roo said the tournament would also help prepare the Joeys for the AFC U-16 Championships which will be held in India later this year. But the squad was solely focused on winning the south-east Asia event for the first time since 2008. “The AFC U-16 Championships are in September, we have a great draw, some tough competition in the group stage, Vietnam being one of the stronger teams in South-East Asia. “Japan also in our group - tough group, the tougher the better as we are not afraid of any team in Asia. “We play every game to win. Also the kid from Liverpool the defender Dylan Ryan? Not sure about this surely you should looking the very best players and not just select from the FFA COE, whom i have nothing against im sure they are talented within their own right but i'm surprised they did not the select the players that did really well last time. Anyway i wish the young lads all the best, great experience. There is about 12 changes to the squad that went to Vietnam 2015. Most of the boys that are not going were looked at over the last few months. TD mentioned that there are about 60-70 players in total that could possibly be selected for the qualifiers. I can understand how they would want to take the boys from the COE for this tournament but will be interested to see who is selected for the next. Its been 12 months so some boys may have dropped off and others excelled in their development. Either way you would think the best possible lads will go to India.

Given there are so many changes over 12 months hopefully suggests the talent pool is expanding.
Also do we have any hope of a stream again this year?

Next week the U16s begin their AFF adventure. Very keen to see how these boys progress and hopefully they bring back the silverware from Vietnam.

IMO having had the chance to look at this group it is not as strong as the squad that travelled last year due to a number of players declining offers from the FFA. Those players who have been brought in are I believe not at the same level. This creates a difficult position for the coe staff, do you back the boys who have made the sacrifice to leave home for 2 years and live in Canberra or do you bring in those that declined. The problem is made harder by the specific playing style that De roo refers to and the players ability to bring it to life.

In the end the more boys that get this sort of opportunity the better for aussie football.

You pick the best players and leave politics out of it. There's a few non COE players, so why not just select our best players and be done with it!

We know in Asia qualify isnt easy at all, we should not be playing any more russian roulette anyone when it comes underestimating the opposition in Asia and so should select the best possible team. Maybe the coaching staff want to expose these players to international level to see which ones can handle that level and then take the ones that did well and select the other boys that did well last year that aren't part of the FFA Coe? This AFF thing is an FFA political ass kiss to keep the shite countries happy. Ego boost to young joey players results in nothing. The last joeys group, when tested at WC and against other quality teams, got flogged. Its more then that buddy. The fact that these boys are experiencing the travel, harsh conditions, different styles of play is fantastic. They still might play some HAL squads and currently play in the Canberra NPL seniors. BTW has any one you know been in a joeys squad and been OS? Ask them what they thought and if it was beneficial to their sons development? This is the sort of stuff that some top teams don't get in Europe. Another poster put up England's recent senior team results away from Europe. They were simply atrocious. This hardening up process is beneficial long term.
