Bang on the money.

Unfortunately for Rogic and Luongo, Mooy is playing better than either ATM.

Since the Asian Cup, Mooy has been our best outfield player along with Milligan and Spira.

You really don't put any credence into the leagues in which they ply their trade do you ?

Why would you? It's an indicator, nothing more. Rostyn Grffiths wasn't the player we needed 6 months ago, and he isn't the player we need now. Picking players based on the leagues they are in is simply ridiculous.

When all 23 players come into camp, their leagues become irrelevant, and only their ability matters.

Federici has played the last few matches and is now their number one after boruc was dropped.

Ryan
McGowan - Sainsbury - Wilkinson - Meredith
Jedinak - Milligan
Rogic
Leckie - Juric - Oar

What I expect to see, even if it it annoys me. The fullbacks will need protection as they are all shite and Ange is not going to allow his midfield to be overrun on the counter again. Personally I think Jedinak is not worth his place in the starting XI and would prefer to see Luongo and Rogic both start as 8 and 10 respectively with Milligan behind. This team will be extremely aggressive in transition though and should be capable of pressing for most of the match. If we do have time in the final third, Rogic will be able to be do far more with Juric then Cahill

Cahill will come on after 55-60 minutes if Juric is doing nothing, Wright for Wilkinson and Luongo will replace either Milligan or Rogic.

A number of posters on 442 know I rate performance highly as opposed to pure, hard results. In this instance the performance and results coincided, culminating in us winning a significant trophy.

When we look back, our Euroroos still had some difficulty qualifying through Asia under Pim, even though one of the first to qualify for South Africa.

To play the devil's advocate, to offer an antithetical point to the conditions were tough in the 2007 Asian Cup, every time we play any of the equatorial Asian teams conditions are tough away from home.

I think Asian players are better than one thinks on an individual basis. It is probably for cultural reasons they feel less inclined to seek European careers.

Could be.

However, Mooy will be one of the first selected. His performances as attacking mid have been better than anyone's.

Plus he is the best dead ball specialist. He is currently playing better than anyone else in the team apart from Milligan.

Because Juric is MUCH better with the ball at his feet than Cahill is. Cahill's interchange passing and holding up the play has never really been a strong point of his.

For mine, Cahill and Rogic don't compliment each other well. I think Cahill actually is counter productive when It comes to playing the style of football that Ange wants. In my opinion, I think Cahill ought to only be used for tough away games. His influence over NT games is fading, but Asian sides are still terrified of him.

But Rogic doesn't utilise a striker in most cases anyway, he uses cutting wingers better and wing backs, when he can't make progress forward. A well positioned Chris Commons or Griffiths. (or their young LB,RB)

Think of him actually getting the ball in between the lines and then feeding say Leckie or a flanking Davidson. Juric would be better used trying to disrupt the shape of the back 4, that's where I think he would be better for this game, be a threat but not try and do everything. If he comes deep he is just going to make it easy for their defense. He would be good on the shoulders in front of Rogic

Oar isn't the answer for me, I love the guy, love his speed, but the only thing he will do against a packed defense is over run the ball and lob the ball in the box for someone to head. He will get man tackled too many times and be useless. Bring him on again late when they're tired, perfect

Agree with just about all of this!

Certainly right in saying that Rogic brings the wider players into the game, but he does on occasions slip the ball in behind the backline in tight spaces for the striker, something no Australian has really done since Kilkenny.

Agreed on Oar too, he should never be much more than a sub for Australia.

I'd even prefer to see Ikonomidis on the left wing. But Troisi would be the obvious pick, can penetrate well (bit better than Burns who also has not really been playing). Japan/China trying to get us to fail qualifiers ? Would be effective enough without pulling the ball out waiting for the bus to park every transition.

I think with Leckie injured he's the other good choice on the left wing. Ideally you'd want Kruse on one wing and Leckie on the other. But of course this is Australia and there's always at least 30% of your best side injured.

is Sains fit? could he play Full back (either side) tomorrow given the injuries?

Rogic will start - it is a game in his home town (agains a weak opposition) the crowd will respond to that to give us a bit more of an edge. Mooy Jedi Rogic, behind juric oar and burns.

Why would you play Sainsbury at RB when Risdon is in the squad? Or when you could play Milligan there?

LB is the problem if Davidson isn't fit.

Some good points made in this post, Highkick.

Good to see you back on 442.:)

One thing Rogic and Mooy have added to their arsenal are well-weighted, deft lobs. These can be effective targeted to the central striker.

I think he used to play RB for CCM.

Given Risdon's potential I hope Ange will start him at RB.

Spira's worst game for Oz was at LB. It would be interesting to see Sains there.

How fast is Sains over the turf?

I think it's crazy that we have 5 genuinely strong candidates for 3 CM positions this squad...

Jedi will captain, so you'd assume naturally he's starting. Next to him is a 3 way battle between mooy/milligan/luongo, of which Im really not sure which way Ange will go....I think he'll lean towards mooy given his form at club level.

Rogic will be the first name on the sheet, barring fatigue from playing 3 games in a week.

I think Juric should start this one. As has been mentioned, he gives us much more in attack as a unit, and is in good form at club level (finally a striker scoring goals in a decent euro comp!)

If things are going to shit, bring on oar and cahill together. These two are a weapon we have, but I think they actually need each other in this set up.

ange being Ange (stubborn AF), how likely is it e will start Rogic mood and Luongo together again just to show everyone he made those selection agains Jordan for a reason?

We all know this works well against not very good oposition, but any quality ie jordan, they fall completly flat. Mooy and rogic are very weak mentally, things are wrong their heads go down. Even luongo goes in and out of games.

I think Mooy has a great will to win. Along with Jedi, Holland and Milligan he is the best ball winner we have in midfield. He wins a lot of tackles, shoulder barging duels, strength and heading duels in 1v1s. This is often against opponents who are defenders. Ball winning is a strength of their game.

Rogic has improved in heading and is starting to throw some weight around, but he struggles to get to some of those contests at times. I agree with you it looks like his head drops. Possibly because his lack off stamina is fairly depressing for him, despite his sublime skill on the ball.
