Of course, Sydney is number 1 :d

http://www.traveller.com.au/worlds-friendliest-cities-for-tourists-sydney-named-number-one-gjbdmn

The unfriendliest cities are on the list too, and whilst I haven't been to them all, I have been to Cannes in France and it is spot on! Actually the French and France all round are just f***wits.

Mate has been to Caracas in Venezuela and he loved it there though?

How long ago did he go? Venezuela's economy is crumbling and all sorts of lawlessness has broken out in Caracas. People probably aren't the friendliest because they trust nobody.

it was about 2 years ago. They did a Sth American holiday.

I think most of Sth America you have to be careful with pickpocketers and petty thieves but he (and his missus) loved it.

And they are both red haired Aussies that would of stuck out like sore thumbs too

Tbh I find the people of Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide (except for Elizabeth, place is a whole) friendlier than the people of Sydney.

Try to speak a bare minimum of French when you are there and you will have a completely different experience from your normal tourist yob.

I think it's gotten worse in the last couple of years but it wasn't great back then either. I know quite a few ex-pat Venezuelans and they often talk about how dangerous it is in Caracas. I think anyone that's middle to upper class there is more of a target than tourists but some of things they tell me, I wouldn't be taking my kids there any time soon! The country itself looks beautiful though, hopefully they can sort out their problems.

Thought Sydney people were a bunch of miserable bastards tbh. Personally I'd rate Budapest and Cardiff as hands down the most friendly and welcoming types.

I tried my best to be polite there as I had heard the stories but they simply were rude and brash. In fairness, it was not all of them but the majority especially when you get off the tourist track.

My favourite part was when I walked into a convenience store and I was looking at the different soft drinks and which one to buy. I must of been looking at them too eagerly or something as she started going off at me and kicked me out! Lol that did it for me.

I've heard that redheads are treated like gods in Sth America. Seriously, as in people stop and stare.

I never had a problem in France, heard all the stories and never found it to be true.

If you want to stick out, go to China.

People literally stop you in the street if you have blonde hair and ask for your photo with them.

Keep in mind, most assume you're American.

I was in Guangzhou and Shenzen as a teenager in the mid 90s, when there was heaps less tourists and remember the stares I got. Like, just unashamed stares. I was pretty cocky so it really didnt bother me.

My kids are Eurasian and still very little. When we were in Hong Kong I had multiple strangers try to take their photo on the subway. As a protective dad it gave me the shits. At a relatives funeral, other relatives we had never met were literally lining up to take a photo with my little girl.

On topic, I'm Sydney born and bred and we are rude as shit. Queenslanders are the lovely people I've met. Could easily live there.

This.

The french have a percieved notion of being arogant, which they are. However, it doesn't help when tourists treat their cities like utter shit especially Americans. French dont mind aussies because we give the language and culture a shot.

Also if Paris is a shit hole. Go to smaller cities. The people will love you like no tomorrow and welcome you with open arms.

In order: Vichy, Avignon, Clermont-Ferrand, Moulins, St. Etienne, Lyon.

In HK I'shake my head at them and they would put it down, but if someone went ahead and did it I reckon I would rip their phone out of their hand. I'll say this though, I'd much rather take a pram and baby through TST in peak hour than on any Sydney CBD station

I spent most of the last decade in Shanghai/Suzhou and had a similar experience. People were usually friendly to you and treated you with an air of reverence, as if you were a novelty or something.

Walking around I felt like a celebrity, yeah I was a dickhead

And they are both red haired Aussies that would of stuck out like sore thumbs too

It's the ones in China that do it without your permission that gave me the shits.

In HK I'shake my head at them and they would put it down, but if someone went ahead and did it I reckon I would rip their phone out of their hand. I'll say this though, I'd much rather take a pram and baby through TST in peak hour than on any Sydney CBD station

Agree with you about Hong Kong, even on the trains people are very courteous. Different kettle of fish on the mainland though especially if you head out of the popular tourist cities.

The unfriendliest cities are on the list too, and whilst I haven't been to them all, I have been to Cannes in France and it is spot on! Actually the French and France all round are just f***wits.

Mate has been to Caracas in Venezuela and he loved it there though?

Mate, I've lived in Sydney.

I hate to offend people who live there, but it is the unfriendliest city in Australia by so far it isn't funny.

Other unfriendly places in order.

1. London (a disgrace to the English speaking world, and very different to the English north). Without doubt, the unfriendliest place I've ever been. I have Pom parents and many Pom relatives too.

2. Istanbul ( too many touts, the rest of the people in Turkey are very hospitable).

3. Paris

Can't think of any other unfriendly cities and I've been to 25 countries.

Friendly cities in Australia - most places other than Sydney, where nobody trusts anyone else.

Friendly overseas cities in no particular order - Lucerne, Rome, Madras (Chennai), Chang Mai, Singapore, Surabaya, Penang, Ipoh, Hamilton ( NZ), Rarotonga, Delhi, Calcutta, Darjeeling, Siena, Florence, Athens, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Toronto, Katmandu, Manchester, Chesterfield, Durham, Sheffield, Derby, Lincoln, Edinburgh, Inverness, Cardiff, Kuwait City, Dubai, Izmir, Fetiye (Turkey), Denpasar, Rangoon, Barcelona.

People are very friendly all over India and Nepal.

North of England is great. Ditto Scotland. They love Aussies.

Italians are charming. Greeks are great on the islands. Spanish are renowned for friendliness.Swiss are goo din Italian speaking Switzerland.

Arabs are very hospitable in Jordan and Oman. Southern Iranians are very friendly. Thais are great hosts. Malays are happy and laugh a lot.

Arabs are shocking in Saudi and the first class Kuwaitis. Overall Kuwait is friendly with all the immigrant workers from the sub-continent, Phillipines and other Arab countries without oil ( Jordan, Palestine, Egypt).

Burmese are also very friendly. Balinese kids are very welcoming.

Gee, overseas tourists must get a shock in Sydney.](*,)

Tourists tell me ( I have tourist accommodation on Tassie's East Coast), that east coast Tasmanians and Far North Queenslanders are friendliest people in Australia. I've found people friendly in all Aussie states in rural and regional areas.

Canberrans who've travelled a bit are alarmed they think Canberrans are not particularly friendly when they return.

Sydney is one of the snobbiest and rudest cities in the world with a tryhard complex.
Melbournians and Brissie are way friendlier.
