About time he made the switch. Became pretty clear he wasn't going to make it anywhere as a QB after being waived by both the Chiefs and Bengals this offseason alone. Says a lot about how desperate the Browns are for anything at WR that he's made the final roster.

I watched this guy since he was about 19 with the Eels , so to see him make this move is terrific. He looks just as smooth in pads as he did in League. I love the wraps he got for the over the shoulder catch, which sounds like it must be a rare thing. I've seen him do that probably 40 times.

In terms of media coverage, there was a small article on Grantland, which is a reasonably large national (global) website.

If the NFL was smart they would move heaven and earth to get every 49ers game on free to air here. It would be the best exposure they could ever hope for.

They are all being broadcast live on 7mate.

I find this passage particularly perceptive.

There's a large element of this in the Hayne story.

Mark Bosnich on the back page made an interesting point that he thought Mat Ryan's ascendancy to Valencia was more significant given he is actually playing real matches, in the world game.

But, nup, we seem to care more about a guy playing practice matches in a sport that means bugger all in this country and outside the US.

BTW, I hope Hayne does really well, but there are a few people who I've actually heard comparing this to Cathy Freeman's gold medal and friggin' Don Bradman.

I mean, C'mon.

Don't think he'll ever get that far, but certainly done a lot better than I ever thought he would.

I couldn't agree more. It's like I don't see how this achievement ranks higher than Matt Ryan making it to Valencia and pipping the spot of a Brazilian international. Or Kruse ripping it up in the Bundislega.

I just think the media makes more of this than really need be.

Lets get excited if he does well in the real games. There are plenty of American 49ers fans who follow the sport closely who aren't excited. Also, he's doing exactly what he did in league. The catching, stepping, palming guys off, the difference is as I've seen is these NFL players can't tackle for shit. They just jump in head first. I thought Israel folaus transition to AFL was more remarkable even though he didn't set the world on fire because he had to change his whole physique and learn a very different skill set.

Not undermining his achievement, what Ryan is doing at Valencia is great, but he didn't 'pip' anything, he Bradbury'd it. He got lucky with Alves being injured and credit to him he's making the most of that luck and the chance that came from it.

Think people need to stop semi-bagging poor ol Bradbury too imo.

Tbf he's only famous for getting lucky twice in a row and being Aussie. Not a bad way to be remembered.

The difference here is that Ryan is doing what his doing in his chosen sport. Hayne switching from league to NFL is a much bigger story. Considering the first pre-season game was the first time Hayne had EVER played a game of American Football it's freaking amazing.
