Some huge generalisations here. We need to separate out 'how much media coverage of an issue there is' versus 'how much of an actual issue something is'.

Much like the reporting of violence at, and around soccer games, the issue is not so much that the media reporting is technically accurate or not, but the amount of focus put on one group by the media (soccer fans / muslims) versus other groups ( AFL & NRL / non-muslims).

Regarding the national anthem thing - who gives a sh#t??? Its not like they walked out on the anthem because they rejected Australia. The issue was participation in singing etc. At the end of the month they'll be back at the anthems anyway.

I'm just glad I finished school before the Howard-era patriotism bullsh#t came back into fashion. What the hell does standing in front of a flag and anthem prove anyway??? It means NOTHING.

Back when I was a kid we were proud of the fact that we weren't like the flashy americans waving our flag at every opportunity. Thanks to Howard - kids wear the flag as a f#cking cape at music festivals and love singing the moronic "aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi" which they don't realise that the rest of the world laughs at when they hear...

I would say if you don't like Muslims here living their own lives then you're also welcome to leave and not complain.

Whenever someone uses that word I always say "assimilation into what?"

The ironic thing is that one of the few rights our constitution does explicitly protect is freedom of religion. But instead of celebrating pluralism and diversity, white Australians expect immigrants to come here, drink VB, abandon their religious and cultural practices, get a southern cross tattoo, and act like a shitcunt at the AFL. It just goes to show you how spectacularly uninformed most Australians are.

Let's not forget -

"Assimilation" was first used after the shutting down of Aboriginal missions and reserves in the 1950s. It reflected the idea that Aboriginal people now had equal freedom of movement, but they were discouraged from expressing traditional culture and beliefs. In other words you could have black skin but you were expected to act white - convert to Christianity, get a job, and sing God save the queen. The term was then used to describe the expectations of immigrants.

I don't know why people continue to think assimilation is okay. It's actually incompatible with our pluralist constitution. As long as nobody's human rights get breached, we should just leave people alone.

Assimilation to me is "not running around killing innocent people in the name of religion" ...is that too much to ask....or should we legalise that too to pander to minorities.

My point was that our constitution protects their right to free speech and to practice their religion. It also says that everyone gets a fair trial. When you become a citizen you also pledge your loyalty to Australia, it's laws and institutions. If you break the law you get punished.

You seem to be in some moral panic that Muslims are destroying the country. Here's the good news - 2 Muslim extremists have committed terrible murders in the last 12 months. both were killed by the police. Meanwhile the other 450,000 Australian Muslims went about their daily business.
