So one attacker posed as a Syrian migrant, one was a French national and they were apparently helped by 3 French brothers living in Belgium, one of which died during the attacks.

I think it helps sometimes to see things in an historical context. Arguments over the "true nature" of a religion are pointless, as is talking of "banning" religions.

The simple fact is that there have also been many westerners who "turned" in a very short period and committed acts of terror. This phenomenon is not exclusive to religion, it has existed through history.

Yes - there are lots of legitimate grievances about middle east policies, but it is important to realise these are merely a pretext to justify these acts of violence.

The reality is that, aside from the intelligence services doing their job and trying to prevent things like this from happening, there is not much that can actually be done.

ISIS Is blatantly, and openly, trying to drive a wedge within western societies between muslims and non-muslims. They are trying to create the conditions for a crack-down in the hope of recruiting more muslims to their cause.

So, those of you railing against islam should bear in mind that you are reacting the exact way ISIS is hoping you do.

In regards to the historical precedents, to show that this type of thing is not exclusive to religion, and to show that these movements predicated on terror eventually exhaust themselves, read up on the anarchist years of terror, and the 1970s red brigades.

History repeats in many different guises.

Anarchist propaganda of the deed in the late 1800s and early 1900s:

Cracking down on the extremists and keeping the moderates onside is the way to go.

Banning Islam altogether is ludicrous.

If you ban islam you might as well ban all religions.

Thats the problem SocaWho. We are not keeping the moderates on side. We are brushing them as the same as those fuck wits who did this. Instead of saying those animals are barbaric thugs who dont give a flying fuck . We attack those who actually are innocent in this all. Why is that we alwas ask the muslim community to disown these despicable people but we never ever hear anyone asking the catholics to disown the paedophiles or the barabic crusades?

Having a mass influx of immigrants from Syria should be well down the priority list....especially after Paris.

The catholic church has been absolutely smashed over the paedo scandal. George Pell himself has copped a flaming because he apparently tried to hide some of the abuse. We don't have catholics moaning about how 'targeted' they are.

The problem with the moderates though is as soon as anything to do with religion gets brought up they whinge and bitch about stereotypes, racism etc etc. It's hard to have a productive conversation about this when you have to exclude a huge contributing factor to this disaster (religion, specifically Islam) to avoid hurting everyone's delicate feelings.

It may just be that it's not reported.

I guess when we have mainstream Islamic leaders coming on TV shifting the blame around it makes it so much easier to target them in particular.

If we made Pell squirm on TV his reaction would probably be similar.

As for islam if any muslims are reading this thread know that many of us welcome you in this country, many of us are capable of using google to find muslims speaking out against these travesties rather relying on media narratives, many of us are capable of learning about your religion and reading the quran rather than relying on rumour and viral social media posts even if my conscioence leads me to have profoundly different beliefs. Many of us are greatful for the friendships we have with you and hope we can do whatever we can to make your life in this country as enjoyable as mine

They are following the Quran, it literally tells them to kill non-believers?

So does the Bible if you look in the right places.

What of it?

Have a listen to people with expertise in Islam, not people like Andrew Bolt

What places?

A significant chunk of the old testament

You mean things written for a specific time and place, not things written for Christians to do today.

That is the point you pleb. The Quran was written 1500 odd years ago and contains very outdated practices. Most Muslims, like the Christians realise this and accept that these things belong in the past. There are however uneducated people who can't accept this and choose to abide by ancient and stupid stories such as Westboro and ISIS

Figure out what the root cause is and stop it instead of making things worse by increasing the actions which help facilitate these horrors to begin with. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind etc etc

That's fine mate but the "root cause" is dependant on who you talk to. It was either 2 weeks ago, 20 years ago for GW1, 10 years ago for GW2, when Britain drew up the borders 100 years ago or 1300 years ago when the Sunnis and the Shias decided they didn't like the shape of each others heads.

I'm fully aware of the concept of root causes. The execution, no pun intended, is somewhat more challenging.

It's naive to think that if the west withdrew all political and military responses and support that IS would magically disappear.

They are deliberately poking the hornets nest and won't stop until they get a reaction.

Was thinking about this the other day. Really what they need to do is build a 10m high wall around the whole of this fucked up middle east and let the fuckers fight it out for the next 100 years and see who wins.

Causing ourselves no end of grief for no benefit.

What's the other solution? Ignore it and continue to blame the west for breathing and continuing to throw the term racist around where convenient?

They are deliberately poking the hornets nest and won't stop until they get a reaction.

Was thinking about this the other day. Really what they need to do is build a 10m high wall around the whole of this fucked up middle east and let the fuckers fight it out for the next 100 years and see who wins.

Causing ourselves no end of grief for no benefit.

That sounds like a far right solution.

What's the other solution? Ignore it and continue to blame the west for breathing and continuing to throw the term racist around where convenient?

I disagree. There are simple solutions. Execute the fuckers until they lose the will to fight and go back to their deep dark holes.
