Does it make him less of a dick because you found an article from 6yrs ago where a women said to a man - - no.

What about other instances of a MAN saying something inappropriate on television to a women? Chris Issac getting the Today host to sit on his lap. Burt Reynolds being a dirty old man to Samantha Armytage. The list got on.

Funny how you defenders of womanly rights all go silent on that one. Lucky for them they're white I guess.

Does that change what Gayle did? make it better or worse?

Fact is he set out to embarrass Mel on Live National TV, and the fact that Burt Renoylds is a sleaze does not change the fact that he did what he did. It doesnt add more or less righteousness to his actions.

Everyones a social media warrior now days who jump on the latest like/share and defend sides.

Outraged at the outraged.

Meanwhile on the same day this interview happened we discovered LNP politician Peter Dutton called a female reporter a MAD F**KING WITCH. I dont think I have even seen a blip about that.

Dutton was called to account for his misogynist actions if I recall correctly.

He was called out but I am more referring to the continual positioning of this incident above all others.

I consider Dutton's outburst to be more offensive than Gayles, but you would not think so with all this exposure.

When did Burt Reynolds and Chris Isaac do their sleazy stuff? Just interested as perhaps because of the status of social media in generating clickbait controversy, if these things happened now they probably would generate confected outrage?

I don't really see Gayle's race having much to do with anything. In fact, the only reference I have seen to race / culture was used as a defence (eg "in his culture this is not regarded as unprofessional"). I don't really buy that though.

On a sidenote - the fake outrage that is generated online over everything nowadays is just ridiculous, and distracts from important issues.

No it doesn't. But it does, in my opinion, show that the social media outrage types have their own prejudices they need to address. Women get hit on like this on TV all the time yet it is only an issue once a black man does it. Go figure.

I don't reckon it is due to his race. I think it is because the Big Bash rates highly, and it came right after the Briggs thing came out (which already generated clickbait arguments).

I reckon 9 out of 10 people don't know who Peter Dutton is. I genuinely think it just got lost in the noise generated by Briggs and Gayle.

The fact that Briggs actions were all over the paper also kinda works against your line that when white guys do something there are no consequences.

Are you talking about the same thing there EG?? We're talking about people creating social media outrage over any incident rather than the over glorification of people after they die.

Having said that, you make a good point about Amy Winehouse although David Bowie's death really is kind of a big deal. A very influential musician.

Totally realised that after I posted it.

Agreed on that front. The outrage is so freaking annoying, but that's what social media does. It provides amplified voices for those with shit, unjustified opinions.

Yeah, pretty much.

A year or so ago, Sean Penn made a comment at the Oscars about his personal friend, Alejandro González Iñárritu, "who gave this guy his green card?" when he read out his name as the winner of the award.

Well twitter had a fit. You would've thought he'd killed a baby lamb on stage and drank its blood. He later explained they were close mates and it was their ongoing banter to each other. He also gave a good explanation on a talk show of how social media outrage spreads.

Good points. Media should be left to the experts and not average joes getting on the podium and ranting at the world. Nobody really wants to read that.

Kinda disagree with that - who are the experts anyway????

It's just the price of the democratisation of opinions. Back in the old days, media organisations had much more control in terms of controlling the agenda. This could be good (no airtime given to crazies like the anti-vaxxers), but also bad (cover-ups like Jimmy Saville in the UK etc).

Nowadays it is a free for all, and the media generally just follows whatever is driving clicks online when looking at what stories to chase. There is good and bad in that too.

Out of interest, I have been reading this fascinating book about public shaming online - "So you've been publicly shamed" by Jon Ronson.

http://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00QGEA1HG?keywords=so%20youve%20been%20publicly%20shamed&qid=1452636331&ref_=sr_1_1&s=digital-text&sr=1-1

Worth a read, fascinating stuff!

Definitely one of those people that seems way ahead of his time, artistically and intellectually. I would highly recommend you giving his work your attention, the world lost a great man.
