The only way it will work is if the FFA puts it out in the market place and has the necessary discussions to gauge interest and a range of issues including costs etc.

First step is the FFA saying okay let's have an open and honest discussion about firstly a national 2nd tier and secondly a P/R mechanism.

Agreed

The FFA should announce that this season they will be looking to put in place a national second division of 8-10 teams and clubs can apply for the following licenses: Canberra, Brisbane, Gold Coast, North Queensland, Tasmania, Geelong, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, and Adelaide

Cost is $1m capital (one off) and $500k sponsorship (recurring)
Contribution from the FFA will be $700k TV dollars (recurring)
Club will require access to stadium with lighting requirements and 3k seating

If no team applies then that spells an end to the whole 2nd division discussion and P/R

If the quota is met then the 2nd division is run in place of the youth league, and A League teams put their own youth league process in place (like playing them in the state leagues)

Win/ win IMO

Edited by bluebird: 18/3/2016 01:52:05 PM

I agree with majority of what you say in regards the the 2nd division. I do think the 2nd Division would need to settle before P/R is implemented to the upper A-League and Lower Premier Leagues.

In everyones opinion which NPL clubs would be able to make the step up?

According to the stadium capacitys of clubs in the NPL most wouldnt be up to standard.

Only 2 in Victoria have seated capacity over 3k: South Melbourne and Knights.

Any Adelaide/Perth/GC team would have to play at nib/Hindmarsh/Robina I would assume

Combined Canberra - Canberra Stadium
Combined NQ - Willows
Combined Tas - North Hobart Oval I would think is the best option
Combined Geelong - Kardinia or there is the talk of a stadium being built.
Looks like Palm Beach has already made moves by changing their name to Gold Coast City - Robina
Brisbane Strikers - Ballymore??
Who in Adelaide?
Who in Perth?
Melb - South/Knights?
Wollongong Wolves?
Theres talks of a South Sydney team or would an NPLNSW team step up?
Would you try and coax Auckland City to have a crack?

Pointless post in reality, just thinking out loud and very intrigued I guess

Can't believe people are still arguing about Pro/Releg for years. It just will never happen under the current set up. I try to avoid these threads as the same points have been made a billion times, not having a go at anyone, just thing you guys can make better use for your time ;)

A lot of people, especially in football circles, are extremely passionate about issues. This will never change and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Exactly - the day people STOP discussing football outside the A-League, and ways in which to enhance/expand the professional game, is the day the game dies.

If pro rel happened football players won't suddenly forget how to play football. Some clubs may lose out but others will gain. We keep hearing how good the next generation of players will be. Lets create an environment with more professional clubs for players to play at.

If the FFA get a shit tv deal it does not affect Ruban Zs footballing abilities.

As difficult as pro/rel is we need to be having these discussions and being proactive with our football. Every country in the world has some issue or challenge in regards to their football competitions. We can't claim that we are unique in that regard.

At some point the AFC will pose the question about our status on pro/rel and what we are doing about it. In fact I dare say there are plenty in West Asia/ middle East who would love to see the back of Australia from the AFC right now.

The first step is to create a viable professional 2nd tier. Set high criteria and standards. It needs to be both NPL clubs and new teams. There needs to be investment from the FFA which will include money set aside from the next TV deal. Everyone said we couldn't start the A-league from scratch 11yrs ago, well here we are. In fact I seem to recall that when the A-league first started that the salary cap grant for each team was 1.2m, so it's achievable as long as the TV deal is 80m plus. At 80m you will have enough money to satisfy owners of A-league clubs and you will have enough money to satisfy the PFA particularly if you tie in new professional places in a viable 2nd tier. Make it happen before it's impossible in future years.

My worst nightmare is the FFA getting a good TV deal and spending that money to prop up Newcastle and Central Coast every year, as well as pay Zadkovich and Warren 10 times what they're worth.

Foxtel are part of the problem. They and the FFA are happy to talk about potential $10 million going to marquees instead of creating a second tier league.

Should the National NPL division (2nd tier) be a straight league season first past the post or because their is no promotion to the A-League to begin would you have final series.

Me personal think we should just make it straight league so people get used to the idea of a first past the post league system so that when promotion does become possible supporters of teams in this league its already ingrained in them what is required.

Agree 100%

No point ruining the foundation of the league just to add another once a year game that will have minimal interest

Football at that level is about competitiveness. P/R is a multi-million dollar decision and it really needs to go to the best overall team

This was our promotion after 5 years.

We had to draw to go up. We won 5-0...... actually the ref called the game off with 3 minutes of extra time to be played (in the 92nd of 95).

Im not arguing promotion relegation. You post a video about national rugby union teams having tiers. Thats a bit weird at national level tbh. I guess we have fifa rankings though.

I think it poses the same problems that the A-League has.

You perhaps want some new team/s but are scared of losing the established team. For the rugby it would be difficult. You would have to probably have to have a second tier then eventually increase it to 7 teams. Meaning the 7th team would probably be Georgia, then Spain/Romania on rotation.

This is also the FFAs argument. Pro rel could be brought in the same time as expansion. So you increase the comp to 12, meaning the current 10 teams never have to be relegated -........if they are good enough.

Everything comes from the establishment of a second division.

So the A-League in a way is more like 6 nations than the premier league. They do nothing to help the smaller teams.

Honestly its 2 different sports, national teams and they play over a complete continent.
