Not everything ca4n be dumbed down to white/male/heterosexual priviledge. The simple fact is the kids were living in Australia with their mother, the father took the children to Lebanon under the guise of a holiday and failed to return them. It would be different if she kidnapped the kids into Australia and ripped up their passports, but it must doenst flow logically that she would get them fresh new ones and than them back to their daddy. A woman who steals her kids and rips up passports isnt the kind of woman who hands the kids to father to take on an overseas holiday.

Considering the team they went with were supposedly 'recovery specialists', and the recovery didn't go at all as planned, I wonder if the 60 Minutes team will be door-stepping those who set the job up in a 'shonky recovery specialists' feature.

The only thing they're specialists in is finding pictures on the internet they can use to claim they're children they've 'saved'

Lol, anyone using the phrase "white privilege" is a dick. More like typical arrogant journos.

The father is well connected in Lebanon and willing to forgive the mother but not 60 minutes. He is wealthy and powerful enough to discourage anyone from taking a bribe to help them. If they are released expect to see a major concession by the government to Hezbollah/ Iran. Possibilities are Hezbollah/ IRGC to be removed from the terrorism list, the ban to be lifted on broadcasting their propaganda in Australia and allowing welfare payments to be made to those who return to Lebanon.

I hate the phrase as well but it does hold true. I think a more adequate term would be an "America complex" or "First world syndrome". Thinking that we are the best and can try and kidnap children in a foreign shithole of a country without any repercussions

Out of interest, where have you got this political connection stuff from re the dad?

I haven't seen it anywhere in the media is all, and I would have thought if there were any connections between him and Hezbollah the media would be all over it.

Are you assuming that because he is wealthy (is he???) that he must have such connections?

I kind of think our govt will just let the legal action take its course. They were caught pretty redhanded so its not like its an "injustice" scenario. The public doesn't seem too concerned either.

To secure their freedom, the mother had to give up custody rights.

I wonder if that weighs on Tara and the crews conscious that they go home to their kids and she can't - probably not.

What does the dad tell the kids when they are old enough to ask where's my mum and understand the answer?

I don't understand she everyone acting like this senario is a good outcome?

Unfortunate considering they are looking at a max 30 years hard labour.

Others can decide what the right terminology is, but I wonder if the attitude displayed is built on the knowledge that in Lebanon justice is bought and sold and that the rights and wrongs of kidnapping a child is decided by a chequebook.

If they are found guily in absentia then potentially they'll not be able to go to middle east ever again, so no stop overs in dubai while on the way to Europe etc.

Hilarious that they've basicaly paid a million and the mum has lost the kids - well fucking done, so considerate. It will be fantastic if they are fugitives forever, will fuck their reputation as reporters, how will you take them seriously?

Was speaking to my Lebo mate apparently before leaving Australia with the kids, his wife made him sign a sworn promise that he would return the kids to Australia. The problem was the English translation stated exactly this but the Arabic "translation" relinquished custody to the father. Can't believe people are still defending him because he's a bloke, deceitful bugger. He was appalling this morning on radio, basically confirmed the mothers side of the story.

Er, he was granted custody of the kids in the first place. Or don't Lebanese courts matter?

Decietful is he? Interesting how there are no allegations of kidnapping against him, nor have they been able to come up with dirt despite PR teams on this 24/7.

Did you conveniently forget he took the children from Australia under the proviso he return them? Hiding behind the Lebanese legal system doesn't excuse his actions which were rotten, mendacious and manipulative. Just because he's the dad doesn't mean he's the good guy, if the genders were reversed and the woman stole the children from Australia who do you think the vitriol would be directed at? Put yourself in her shoes, if your wife took your kids overseas and decided to stay there and divorce would you just sit there with your thumb up your butt going "oh well, that's the law I suppose". By justifying his actions you're justifying thousands more cases whether vindictive mothers hide behind the law to deny fathers access to their kids.

Well, isn't that what she did by ignoring the Lebanese court decision?

If he 'stole' these kids then why has there been

- No charges laid by Australian Police
- Not even an investigation recommended either to or by any law enforcement body
- No accusations except from Internet slueths that he 'stole' or 'kidnapped' them

I will tell you why, because it's complete bullshit and there is more to this story.

Once again she was decent enough to let the kids go with the father to Lebanon, for a holiday. not to be subject to the Lebanese courts regarding custody decision. I'm not sure how the Lebanese legal system works or if it even recognises the rights of mothers, but Lebanon is a country well known for its high levels of corruption and nepotism so its entirely possible the mother was conned not just by the father but by the court system.

Lebanon isn't a signatory to the Hague convention so there's little police can do here to "investigate" the issue, it's effectively out of their hands. The father could have plucked the kids from within Australia without the mothers consent and it would still not constitute a crime in a legal sense. Yet surely, despite the legal ramifications, surely you can recognsie that this father was deceitful, manipulative and complete immoral? What about the effect on the kids, do you they want to live in Lebanon? Is it going to damage them to be involuntarily separated from the mother, or do they still think their on holiday?

Anyway, anyone think it's possible the two involved parties hatched this scam in order to extort millions of dollars from channel 9?

Two wrongs dont make a right Rusty. It is irrelevant if the mother was lied to about the holiday. You simply cannot go to a country with a foreign media contingent, hire professional kidnappers and try to steal children. It just does not work that way
