Just to clarify - it wasn't the military as a group that attempted the coup. It was a faction within the military.

I feel sorry for the foot soldiers - most look pretty young, just obeying orders. Now being mistreated.

I don't think the coup was staged. But like the saying goes, "never let an opportunity go to waste".

Erdogan has been purging the military for years, this is the perfect excuse he needs to go full bore.

Just like 9/11 was the opportunity for the neo-conservatives in the US to push the US to invade Iraq.

The people I feel most sorry for are the democracy advocates in Turkey having to swallow their vomit and defend Erdogan's regime against military rule.

Choosing between an authoritarian regime and a military dictatorship. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place!

I seriously doubt that!

I also believe there will be repercussions down the track as the Officers start recruiting on the inside.

Personally, I believe Erdogan is as good as dead this year. Assassination from a Special Ops guy.

Whilst things like assassination are always possible, I think this coup is a good demonstration that the military is not as independent of the govt as it has been previously.

The fact that only a faction of the army rose up, and the rest did not join in shows that Erdogan controls a significant chunk of the army.

And certainly, now this has happened, it is the excuse he needed to be blatant and really flush the last remnants of independence within the military.

Normally, this would be a good thing. In theory the military should always be under civilian control. The problem is that Erdogan has become increasingly authoritarian over the years, and is day-by-day becoming a Turkish Putin.

The Coupists had control of military Jets, attack helicopters and entire Naval Ships.

I think you might find that the Coupists had control of the vast majority if not all the military. Certainly a lot more than 3000 for them to take so much control.

It's just now that many have had a change of heart and were sitting on the fence behaving themselves because they don't want to face a Court Marshall.

I predict Erdogan is this year's dead man walking. I know enough of the Turkish Military to understand his time on earth is on borrowed time. The Military has executioners of their own, and there will not be in legal process to boot!

They don't see it that way.

Erdogan has purged the Military on 3 occasions and will do it again. To get into Officer School, you need to have allegiance to AKP and Erdogan, which is becoming increasingly Islamist, Authoritarian, and Dictatorial. There is nothing democratic in Turkey.

What is impossible though, is escaping the Kemalist indoctrination within the Military. There is no chance they will take this and allow Erdogan to succeed.

It's not over.

Over 3000 Officers and 1600 Judiciary have been arrested.

Many may face the Death Penalty for High Treason.

The Military will be watching and I believe Erdogan will be executed before any of the Officers or Judges will be.

Not just bigger than the entire Australian Defence Forces, but the Coupists were deeply entrenched and had control of at the very least significant portions of the Military.

For them to mobilise hundreds of Tanks and Armoured Vehicles in the manner they did, is no mean feat.

They just chickened out when civilians started to lay before their tanks. They couldn't bring themselves to kill them.

I think they didn't plan it well and were hoping that many people will come out in their support. About 40 to 50% of Turkish Population support Kemalist Forces. But they didn't come out, maybe because they are scared.

I don't think this is fake.

But I do not believe the Military has succumbed either. They are just back to the drawing board with their remaining sleepers in the ranks. The ones that will not be arrested.

There will be another attempt. Minimum assassination.

You know there was fighting between military units as well?

This was a coup by some generals and officers, not the highest levels of the military.

Most of the military did not support the coup.

WTF are you going on about????

This is getting mass coverage. People who are concerned about black people getting shot by police aren't happy about this... You think cops were trigger-happy before? How much worse do you think it will be now?

Obama has been on TV twice within a day to address this.

 sorry the whole thing was meant to be in blue.

Of course this is only making things worse. Cops are going to have an easier time justifying shooting first and asking questions later.

I don't know what these people committing these horrific acts actually hope to achieve.

3 cops shot in Louisiana .
dis ain't going away by the looks of it

but remember #blacklives matter and to show how much the police needs to calm down and stop racial profiling, we need to shoot a few..... surely that will solve the problem....

It's strange, the media coverage seems to be lessened compared to the shooting of a man selling records and DVD's.

WTF are you going on about????

This is getting mass coverage. People who are concerned about black people getting shot by police aren't happy about this... You think cops were trigger-happy before? How much worse do you think it will be now?

Obama has been on TV twice within a day to address this.

Fark you can be full of sh1t sometimes!
This thread in a nutshell. Full of confirmation bias.

It's pretty common, I'm not naive enough to say it doesn't happen to me as well.
