Nah I have a funny feeling the boys will nick it. Been slowly improving and I reckon they have progressed from the first 2 games.

Checked wiki for info, compared to last year that team had guys like Prince(FFA FV) Dylan Ryan(Liverpool), Memeti( Melb.City), Krantis (FFSA NTC), Yates( West Torrens Birkalla), Najjarine (WSW), Martis (FC Midtjylland), Scibilio (FFA COE), Bodnar (Perth Glory), Sweedan (WSW?). And the fact that what the likes of De Roo saying they have a talent of 60-70 players all up i'm sure there is more players that can be selected if they are stuck up about selecting players that are only part of the set up in canberra.

Yes, but some of them may have just dropped off the pace.. we do expect some changes in the squad as new kids develop... I just wonder if anyone really knows if any of our top talent was prevented from coming, due to club or personal reasons...

A good coach ultimately makes a team look better by creating more situations where the kids have time and space against less opposition players. So I definitely think coaching is a problem. But individually the kids look a level down from last year. This is a surprise

So Brook is still 14? Youngest player at the COE you'd imagine then? Says he wants to be like Gotze one day. Kid's got a shot, if Amini could get to Dortmund it sounds like this kid has a chance too, maybe depends on his passport situation.

I hope that the COE kids from last year haven't gone backwards coz at the moment I see two possibilities 1. Our kids go backwards in their development between 15 and 17 or 2. The best kids aren't being selected or are refusing selection there are rumours supporting 2 but 1 is a concerning possibility

Coaching is a clear issue. Still too much of a good old boys network in national youth football.
The thing about football - the important thing about football - is its not just about football. - Sir Terry Pratchett in Unseen Academicals For pro/rel in Australia across the entire pyramid, the removal of artificial impediments to the development of the game and its players. Vietnam win 3 nil again leaving one spot open to progress to the final four. We take on Malaysia with a draw being enough to progress but ideeally we should win.

DOB on wiki is incorrect. Possibility 2 has been confirmed by coaches (https://soundcloud.com/worldfootballau/tony-vidmar-interview) but there was only a handful of kids who declined. Some Joeys declined but also some werent offered.

That's no insult to them mind you there are some talented looking players there that look slightly better than the players that we were producing 3-6 years ago for that age group. I'm wondering if it can be explained by purely looking at who wasn't selected/declined the call up or if the coaching philosophy has changed? (or perhaps last years group were particularly technical?)

All my own opinion .... The COE is more concerned with potential (to play for the national youth and hopefully senior team) rather than right now performance hence the COE doesnt necessarily equal the greatest 23 boys and as the squad is made up mostly from the COE, it doesnt mean its the best 23 out there right now. Last years AFF squad wasnt involved with the COE and hence the best lads out there based on what was seen at Coffs, NTC, scouting etc were selected. This tournament is being used as an opportunity for coaches to do a few things - give the COE and the other boys some national and adapting with the climate experience, scout out opposition (Vietnam), highlight the COE as the place to be for national call-up for future classes (also reward those who chose COE over HAL) and analysis the boys, their coaching philosophy etc. Theres half of the old joeys in this current squad and IMO theres only a handful of kids in this squad who possibly will join most of last years AFF team for Goa to make the best 23 kids available. Im sure there will be a few changes as everyone develops at different paces... As far as I'm aware coaching tactics have slightly changed for this tournament from what is coached/played at the COE. Also coaches arent seeking results if it compromises performance. I know during one of the last games in which we smashed our opponents, the coaches werent too happy with how the boys went about and did so. Once again its all my opinion so I could be wrong but thats what I think is going on! :d

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

The best kids aren't being selected or are refusing selection there are rumours supporting 2 but 1 is a concerning possibility When they staying in a cocoon in Canberra and coaching them this 'style' of coaching to the current players rather than working more on them individually there is a chance the players may have regressed rather than progressed. And also when observing them play in not convinced the coaches are coaching the same way to Ange's standards which goes back to why Ange appointed Gombau? Was it because he has shown he can coach this style and has this thing called 'experience' which Vidmar or Okon don't have. When i saw this group and compared it to last year it seems to the execution of their movements and their passing is below than last year whom came from their clubs. The question is, with the players at the FFA COE do the coaches or the environment itself stifle their creativity and ability to think for themselves too or are they not good enough coaching these kids? That No.10 Brook kid a good example. Because i still think their solid technical ability is still the same as last year but their decision making nor execution has not improved but gone backwards. :-k Edited by Barca4life: 18/7/2016 07:32:53 PM

I think the selection method for the two tourrnaments makes sense of the drop in quality
This tournament has shown that below the top tier the ntc doesn't make a huge difference at the moment probably due to the lack of youth playing full time
