2nd ranked Opals go down to 14th ranked Serbia in the basketball
If there was a medal tally for choking we'd be at the top

The Opals going out is 'only' the loss of a possible silver or bronze medal, but still hilariously shambolic.

We not cursed, we are just mentally soft. Were great at being the underdog and almost snagging that thrilling win, but when we are expected to win and the pressure is on we fall into a heap.

Women's discus final was pretty great. Defending champion Sandra Perkovic manages one legal throw and still wins gold lol

I agree that, these days, when Australia are favourites, they crumble. When they are underdogs, it's another story.
But you should be able to handle the pressure of being expected to win.
Keith Miller famously said "pressure is a Messerschmidt up the arse. Playing cricket is not"
They love playing these sports, and (at the end of the day), it's just sport. So they need to remember that and maybe they won't crumble so easily.

It's never been harder to win an Olympic medal than it is now. The traditional powerhouses are still strong but now there's a bunch of countries that have got stronger with improved access to facilities and training programs. We will never have it as good as we used to.
Meanwhile Tom Burton wins gold in the laser with an increadible clutch performance in the medal race. Great stuff.

Imo it's more difficult to win as many gold medals as it was previously. So much will depend on adequately funding both grassroots and elite sport.
But it's also a case of too many (but thankfully not all) Australian athletes choking badly. Too many weren't able to perform to their potential. Well done Tom Burton, though!!!

One thing that has occurred to me is it probably has not helped having Kitty Chiller in charge of them. It probably didn't make much difference, but it didn't help.
There's no point in having somebody so pushy who draws lots of attention to the Australian Team before the games have even started. For the wrong reasons. Then goes claiming that she anticipates record medal hauls (granted, she's not the only one, I thought we were a good shot at that too, as did Grace Note). But it's worse when the Chef de Mission is doing this on the record.
Next time, they need somebody who is competent, good at relating to everybody and a lot quieter in how he/she goes about things. Fly under the radar

+xBoomers face Lithuania next. The team I fear the most outside the USA. I have horrible memories of 1996. the only way Lithuania can beat the Boomers, is the Lithuanian shoot 3pts out of there ass......out side of Valanciunas and Maciulis, Lithuania a very average team

Look up at the ceiling in your office or house and just think that the blokes in the high jump are clearing the cornice in that room.
Blows you away that when you stand next to the wall the ceiling is still 500-600mm away and they're jumping over that.
They're currently clearing 2.36m.

More armchair experts giving it to Michelle Jenneke for coming 6th in her heat. These experts are probably so unfit they couldn't run to the corner shop for a pie and a coke.
Sickening.

Gotta love the reporter who didn't try to stop Michael from swearing. He knew he was robbed and had every right to be pissed off and unleash a foul-mouthed tirade.
For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby

You can tell that when the organizers were over-emphasizing the point that they were going to smash the London disappointment that it was the wrong mindset to be going into the Olympics with. Telling a favorite "We expect you to win gold" is not a great strategy for easing the pressure, regardless of mental toughness.

I am happy with all the performances. It's not easy competing at that level and they work very hard to get there. Just a couple more Australian Gold would go down nicely though.

+x+xUsain Bolt really is phenomenal. I was always a bit surprised somebody that call could be that much quicker than everybody else. It just goes to show that it doesn't do to judge on height. He has always just looked like he is joking around while he is running. I'll never forget watching when Usain won the 100m in Beijing 2008. Staggering. One thing that he really should be called out on is his celebrating/showboating before finishing a race, maybe he could've gone 9.4s in his prime if he didn't carry on like an arrogant flog during the race. I genuinely believe his awesomeness and legacy is made even better by his showboating. And in 20+ years when guys are regularly hitting the 9.4s we'll still remember Bolt and still wondering what if, and that to me is a hell of a legacy.
