Not even Strebre would miss that.

Actually he would.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

I don't think we can look at exclusively Australian players in Europe. We need to be looking at the development of footballers from all nations for the rather obvious reason that there's no innate difference between Australian and non-Australian footballers. If we just look at Australian footballers in the context of other Australian footballers, we limit how much we can achieve. We play against footballers from every country. Therefore we need to compare our footballers to footballers from every country.

When we do this we see that it is perfectly possible to achieve rapid progress in Europe. And far greater levels of progress have been achieved in Europe than in the A-League.

It's uneven across Europe. But in the better parts, we're talking about higher quality coaching, more competitive matches, far higher technical quality, attacking players who actually know how to take their opponents on with pace and, as a result, defenders who know how to close down very fast.

Where the A-League is ahead of the curve, imo, is the tactical side.

The reality is, however, that if footballers want to develop entirely in Australia, unless they're in the class of Zidane, they're almost certain never to develop the technical skills which the best footballers in the world possess. They'll be about five years behind the rest of the world, too. The best Belgian footballers tend to have left Belgium by about the age of 19. So if Aussie players only go to Belgium around that age, or later, then it's most likely that by the time they've had the chance to succeed in such a league, they'll be too far gone for top notch European sides to consider them.

The best we can hope for is a Mooy like situation every now and then (and Mooy is very much an outlier).

all footballers?   how many players fail in Europe for every Zidane?

in Europe, they use number to develop, and thow away the fail at each stage....Australia can't do that

for every Belgium in Europe, there a Scotland, Greece and now Holand...Belgium raise can be just random Luck

Ding ding ding. Hence the intensely rapid improvement idea being silly.

Ryan concedes but not after his defenders watch the ball fly into the box and a brief header rockets the ball against his momentum into the far corner.

Ryan concedes a penalty after a careless foul from Valencia. He went right early and it's slotted down the middle.

Ryan concedes a 3rd. Rocket header out of his reach. Poor defending and the commentator says that too. I reckon Ryan will get some scapegoat calls but they're very classy goals. I doubt Alves would have cleared those.

Geez. Haven't seen the goals but even if as others are saying they were bad defending rather than bad keeping, it's still not great. Whoscored has Ryan with zero saves for the game and when you concede four that's not a good look. Hope he bounces back

He wasn't great. He was let down by some utterly shit defending but he still, he wasn't at his best. the fourth goal he should've probably saved but only happened because they were pushing for an equaliser.

They'll make him a scapegoat no doubt. Would be a shame if Jaume takes and keeps the #1 spot. Hopefully the manager has faith.

A lot of confirmation bias going on in here regarding Ryan. He's being found out at the top level.

4 goals without a save....that's really really bad.

Still not sure Ange would drop him over Langerak however, simply because Ryan is the sweeper keeper that Ange adores, even if his shotstopping is suspect.

Not calling for him to be dropped in the NT, just that everytime Valencia cops a tonne of goals....miraculously Ryan is never at fault...according to this forum at least.

Still amazing that out of the 3 top goalkeepers at the club, including Alves, Ayestaran has elected to make Maty his #1 keeper in Round 1. That says a lot.

Feels similar to what Guardiola is doing at Man City, dropping Hart for the lesser-rated Caballero due to his foot skills. It's the Spanish way.

Caballero Is 34 years old and had played over 100 games in La Liga before moving to Man City. Hardly a newcomer to footballer, albeit a lesser know "name" than Hart.

Ryan's foot skills are not being questioned here.

the first 2 goals he literally cant do anything about.
3rd, his dive made it look worse, but even if he got a finger on it it was very difficult.
4th he should have got a hand on it.

I just think Ryan needs to be more decisive positionally.

Maty highlights here:
http://www.fullmatchesandshows.com/2016/08/22/valencia-vs-las-palmas-highlights-3/

First two he had no chance. The last two maybe a world class GK would have done better, but they were hardly regulation saves and certainly not any 'gaffes' from Maty. That Valencia defence must be so frustrating to play behind.

I think the first one was savable as well, but it would be truly world class.

The last two were the kind of saves that you have to make every now and then to keep your spot at this level. Ultimately the difference is that when the Las Palmas keeper was sold out by his defence and a striker was allowed through he put out the paw and kept his team in it, he also made a good save from a very good chip. I think Valencia fans will be rightfully pissed that they had the better of a game but their keeper didn't make a meaningful intervention in the few times he was tested.

Aussie keepers in recent times seem to not peform or buckle when taking that next step up.

If it's langerak or Ryan, you never watch them on the big stage with confidence they'll nail it. Always a goal or two that was saveable.
