Twitter to livestream 20 WNBA games as eight Australians contend for roster spotsAustralia's connection to the WNBA will grow stronger this season with eight Opals pressing for roster spots and a new addition to the league's broadcast agreement. The WNBA announced on Tuesday that 20 games would be livestreamed on Twitter over the next three seasons as part of a deal with the social media company.  Opal and Dallas Wings guard Erin Phillips will play a leading role for her club in the upcoming WNBA season. Australian supporters have been able to view selected games on ESPN or pay for WNBA League Pass live streaming service to view all games but the new deal will give the league a chance to draw in new supporters around the world. Dallas Wings guard and AFLW star Erin Phillips is playing a leading role for her club while Rachel Jarry is impressing with the Atlanta Dream.
Leilani Mitchell, Steph Talbot and Cayla George are all in the mix with Phoenix Mercury while Seattle Storm has Jenna O'Hea and Sami Whitcomb in the wings.
Rebecca Allen has returned to the New York Liberty where recent Bendigo Spirit forward Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe is pushing to make her WNBA debut. WNBL imports Ally Malott (Dandenong Rangers), Natasha Cloud (Townsville Fire) and Asia Taylor (Sydney University Flames) are all playing to make the Washington Mystics roster while University of Canberra Capitals import Jazmon Gwathmey is again pushing to retain her place on San Antonio Stars' roster. Opals forward Abby Bishop is listed as a free agent and is not linked to any side at present after previously playing with the Storm. The Wings still hold Liz Cambage's WNBA rights and she is open to returning to the club in 2018. WNBA clubs are expected to finalise their rosters on May 13 [AEST] but can trade, cut and sign players during the season. WNBL coaches Cheryl Chambers and Paul Goriss will join new Australian Opals coach Sandy Brondello as her assistant coaches heading up to the Tokyo Olympics. Melbourne-based Chambers led the Sydney University Flames to a WNBL championship last season while Goriss had a long career coaching in both the men's and women's programs at the BA Centre of Excellence and several Australian junior teams before taking on the University of Canberra Capitals coaching job last season. The two Australian-based coaches will complement Brondello, who is based in Phoenix where she coaches the Mercury. Basketball Australia high-performance general manager Jan Stirling said the appointments added to a new era for the Opals. "Sandy has great respect for the WNBL and Basketball Australia's high-performance pathway and has selected two assistant coaches that will provide a framework to complement her own coaching expertise," Stirling said. "Cheryl's extensive familiarity with our WNBL talent pool and Paul's in-depth knowledge of our athletes in USA colleges are areas that Sandy considers vitally important to the Opals achieving podium success." Brondello has also appointed retired Australian great Penny Taylor as her new director of player development and performance at the Mercury, where Taylor spent most of her WNBA career. (Provided by Cricket Australia) Thanks to a $4 million investment by Cricket Australia over four years, more and more girls are taking up the game and for the first time more are able to play with and against other girls. Less than a year after the Growing Cricket For Girls Fund was introduced, 524 girls teams have joined 46 new all-girls cricket competitions. "It has been pretty common that girls played in boys teams over time and a lot of the girls in the state and national set-ups have come through playing in boys teams," South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) market and community engagement officer Luke van Kempen said. "All our research is telling us that girls like to play sport with their friends and they like to play it in an environment that is inclusive and welcoming.
"It's an area that's not without its challenges but the community it seems has a great appetite for cricket and for girls' sport in general." Mr van Kempen said SACA had worked hard to fill the identified gap in competition for girls aged between 12 and 18 and had targeted building the number of schools that offer girls-only cricket programs. "Overall there's 32,000 girls playing cricket in South Australia from our entry level programs to our schools competitions to elite cricket and indoor cricket," he said. "Last year there were 22,000 girls playing cricket in those areas so what we're doing is increasing the opportunities for girls to play cricket in that 12 to 18 year-old range." SACA has had particular success in regional areas, including in South Australia's mid-north region, centred around Port Pirie, where a "well supported" competition has been attracting high participation.

+xI don't mind the bid, it's just that every bid seems to bring up the Wanderers and it's starting to get tedious listening to them all bring up the same nonsense,, it seriously highlights a severe lack of football knowledge to compare any of these bids to that area. Sydneys west has hosted top flight football games going back to the late 70s, Dandenong/Casey or wherever they wanna park this new team out that way has had zilch. Be creative ffs it's an insult to anyone who knows the game, yeah gotta agree with that. Im amazed that Casey/Dandy is even in the frame tbh.

PLenty are talking this bid up, I don't quite understand it myself. I'm pretty sure the main aim of the two councils involved is to get some sporting infrastructure built, which is fair enough, but South Melb already have their own stadium ready to go, close to the CBD too. Both teams should be accepted and go to a 2nd div along with the many others.

Picture: Getty It’s seems Mr Collingwood Eddie McGuire has sniffed the wind on the subject of women’s sport ... and picked up the wrong scent. Collingwood’s women’s team was part of history on Friday night, taking on Carlton in the first game in the new AFL Women’s competition. Almost 25,000 fans were there to see it, with a couple of thousand more turned away when Princes Park reached capacity. And more than one million people watched it on TV. The one person you would expect to be there, showing his support for Collingwood players at such a significant time, was not. Eddie Everywhere was somewhere else — in another city in fact. McGuire was in Adelaide anchoring the television coverage of the Danny Green-Anthony Mundine fight. Picture: Getty Carlton president Mark Logiudice found time in his schedule to be there, but not Eddie. Interest in the AFLW is massive and has taken even the AFL by surprise. Crowds at all four games this weekend were bigger than expected — bigger than many A-League or NRL games. More than 50,000 people attended the four games and the TV ratings were through the roof. The AFL has been forced to consider moving future games to bigger venues and will almost certainly play the grand final at the MCG. Some of this interest, clearly, is the result of the novelty factor and some of it due to timing — footy fans keen for the new season to begin are happy to watch anyone playing the indigenous game. Fans pack out Ikon Park. Picture: Getty But the arrival of the AFLW comes at a time of surging interest in women’s sport. Women’s cricket, soccer, netball, rugby sevens are all going gangbusters. And the women’s games are genuinely entertaining — skilful elite athletes competing with guts and passion. McGuire has made a huge misjudgement by failing to recognise the significance of the birth of the AFLW. Collingwood’s female players have every right to feel hugely let down that McGuire was not there for their first game. Women’s elite sport — particularly the AFLW — is here to stay and McGuire needs to recognise it. Note to Eddie: Collingwood play Melbourne at Olympic Park Oval at 7.35pm next Saturday. Be there. On and by the way, Collingwood also has a team playing in the new national netball league. The Magpies will play the Vixens at Hisense Arena at 7pm on Saturday, February 18. +xDumb question, but I thought I heard around the traps that they modified the rules for the women's game? One change I remember hearing was that they only have 16 players on the field, not 18? Can anyone confirm if this is the case or not? Yep and 15 min quarters.

+x+xYour right. I also find non traditional football fans have less predujice when talking about the HAL, Euro lovers can often be the games worst enemy. I think it is more the fact that Australian football is not in a good position, look at how many play the sport, look at how many play games like Fifa and then compare to how many attend and watch on TV. This is completely off topic but the issue is the league are focusing on people who aren't really fans of the sport rather than those who are, they are too busy following the formula of the AFL and rugby which the HAL will never ever be able to succeed in that formula. Hopefully Infantino and his people fix the problem in the coming months. Well said Sam.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xGoing off one of the blokes at work who watched it the standard was absolutely putrid. See how long people keep tuning it to see something that's the equivalent of high school kids. Lots of guys watched it purely so they could tell people it was putrid, so take it with a grain of salt. Skills were lower and the clanger rate a lot higher than mens AFL, but it was in no way the equivalent of high school football. It actually was, the reason why because most of them don't actually play the AFL as a sport. There seems to be a useful time-buying delusion around here that most of the players are ring ins. Well over 90% of the players were recruited out of the top leagues in each state and territory. Even the rookies from other sports overwhelmingly player Australian football as kids Briana Davey, the ex Matilda's keeper, played the last two seasons in the state league. According to melissa barbieri She played AF til she was 13 before getting poached and in less than 3 years (at 16!) was keeping for the Matildas. Soccer was certainly ahead of AF in terms of female participation, but if you think there is some long term divide between "serious" and "faddish/gimmicky" women's sport with soccer on the former side and the AFLW on the latter, you are setting yourself up for ever more dissapointment So what if they played some afl as kids? Point is in the main developmental stage of most of those players they didn't actually play the sport and top it off with they do what is it 9 hours training a week, of course the quality will be crap. That is the difference, right now they are part timers as there still isn't enough money being invested in the game in both football and AFLW, it could change in the future but right now it is just a little publicity stunt with no longevity. On basis are people concluding that there is no longevity? Open your eyes people, in case you missed it, the women just kicked the A-League's butts in the TV ratings, comprehensively. So what? These are people who want to watch AFL. We already know that in the Southern States AFL is king. Its not as if they were football fans who switched over to AFL because of the women. FFT seems to operate under the assumption that people are AFL fans or Soccer fans, where a great many are both. The association football forum on bigfooty is huge. So yes, a lot of them were football fans who were watching. Also, based on feeds and forums, a lot of first time supporters got involved, some of them from football, and no, they did not `switch`, I am sure they will keep supporting football. Make no mistake, a lot of those grassroots football players missing from A league crowds and ratings were paying attention to these games. The people the A league needs at its grounds and watching its games mostly support other codes and sports, because its far easier to get someone who is into sport to follow your sport than it is to convince someone who isn't into sport at all. They are not going to `switch`, they are going to start watching the A league, and or the W league, as well as their other sports. They are people for whom AFL is the first love and football a time filler. They can take the A-league it or leave it. If the A-League ended tomorrow a shrug of the shoulders is all you'd get from them. Of course every bum on a seat is welcome, but these are not the ones who will make or break football in this country. The Euro snobs are. And no I'm not talking Costa, Mario or Goran serving the Souvas and kevaps.. I'm talking the Playstation generation Euro snob. To get them coming the A-League needs to improve the on field product. Thats where the money should go. Not some politically-correct money pit. The AFL can throw money down the drain all it likes, we don't need to follow,
