incidentally they seemed to drop off exporting the same time as us. Exports over the last 5 years hasn't been great
Perhaps Europe started throwing their nets further and wider around the mid naughties

i suspect that american players are not worth the money they are asking for in europe.  they get a cushy ride with good pay in the MLS.  it's a bit of a bubble.  just like the oil leagues and china.  any half decent local gets paid mint to stay.

it's an added bonus of the salary cap in australia - as our players pick up a better reputation through the efforts of guys like rogic, leckie, mooy jedi we will become a source of decent cheaper players. this creates opportunity to showcase your goods in a league where your actual ability can be assessed in a more standardised way.

shame about ryan getting injured twice when he nails down the starting role

good article!  nice pick up.  gets me excited to know one of ours is doing well.

funny i was just looking over whoscored this morning as well.

they gave mooy a 6.3 and luongo a 7.4 for the game.

Some similarities. Perhaps in terms of per capita and the fact that both countries have lots of athletes strong in multiple sports.

But, as has already been mentioned, the population of the US is so much greater. That helps them.

They also have a truckload of Hispanic support for the game which we'd kill for.

More than 10x our population, a football-mad hispanic diaspora of around 60 million and yet we have comparable league attendances and develop a comparable level of talent.

We must be doing something right.

your being a bit picky now  :D    i could not be fucked looking so hard

i would say the USA have same shit as Australia...do you have EU  passport

Geoff Cameron  move from Houston Dynamo to EPL Stoke City (2012-13)  playing 35 games 1st season in EPL
DeAndre Yedlin move from Seattle Sounders FC to EPL Tottenham in 2015-16  played 1 game and was loan to Sunderland and played 23 games in 2015-16
Tim Ream move from New York Red Bulls to EPL Bolton  2011-12, played 13 games in 1st season

MLS has players who can leave the MLS and start in EPL.....as when Mooy left the A-League, poster on 442 was hoping mooy will get game time for Huddersfield

Green Gully product m80! ;)

I have often wondered why the mainstream media don't do Aussies Abroad, honestly. Maybe I'm inside the bubble of Australian football talk, but with Aussie media loving Australian sportspeople and the lip service provided to the scores from the odd major teams in the EPL you would imagine that Aussies playing for or against big teams would be obvious sports stories (Jones' clean sheet against Manchester United or Leckie vs Bayern Munich in the last 72 hours as the first examples that come to my head), but there's nothing. Sounds like an easy win, to be honest, given the desperate scraping for Australian glory they do in every other sport, especially come Olympics years.

From my experience in Australian media I would say that the barrier is that this would require actual work rather than copying what they are sent, which is obviously far too much to ask. Really sad.

Imagine a day where the mainstream TV stations go into depth about Australian players and their games, as well as detailed reports on the A-League, and then quickly show the score from the weekend's AFL and NRL games!

Wow. What an exceptional performance by Leckie.

World class. Could have had 3 goals.

His team ripped off on 2 penalties. It could be argued the ref wasn't able to clearly see the 2ND one against leckie.

A pleasure to watch that game and his performance.

First choice player up forward for socceroos. Just exceptional

Oh, and wow.  Does the bundesleague ever have a love for HGH .

Huddersfield forum seems to think Mooy looked a bit tired and off his game today. He's played a lot recently on top of travelling.

QPR forum in meltdown so no news on how Luongo played.

whoscored don't seem to give points for pass accuracy or number of passes
from what I can tell their formula looks something like this

+0.2 for a tackle or intercept
+0.1 for a clearance
-1 for a mistake leading to goal or red card
-0.2 if you get a yellow card or were dribbled around
-0.2 for entire backline (and DMs seem to get a hit) for a goal conceded
+1 for last man tackle/cleared off the line

+0.2 for a chance created or an accurate cross/through ball/long ball
+0.2 for a 15m dribble
+1 for goal/assist/hit post
-0.2 for being tackled/disposessed
+0.2 for a shot on target
also your points appear to decline for minutes on pitch

Jeggo was top notch, riding high with Graz. They play Salzburg in two weeks.

Dougall and Mauk on the bench. No Goodwin.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

I kinda agree with your broken English.
You can pass the ball infinitum, but the trick is to make forward passes that make a difference.

Mooys role though is to be a link between attack and defence. If he cuts out a line with a pass and does it with the highest accuracy in the league that is one of the most important parts of his job. A forward pass that takes out a player is just as effective as a take on that does the same.

Yes
But Ardho makes a point, pass accuracy can be construed because it is all back passes, or sideways passes. Mooy excels because he has great vision and his forward passes are well weighted.

so unfortunately whoscored statistics won't give us the full picture since he takes out so many opposition players with clever passes
also he takes out so many players by clever positioning in receiving passes

still whoscored is good for tracking the defensive part of his game

This gets to the bottom of why the whoscored ratings for players are so flawed. (In fact I think they should get rid of the ratings). There are key passes and there are assists and thats fine. But there is no measurement of meaningful possession/passes or play-making.

The statistics that they use have absolutely no way of determining the impact of passes. One player could have the same stats: say 70 passes and have no impact by along the back-line, while another player could make 70 passes and completely dominate with meaningful passing.
