@ pippinu
The 4 year trend means that crowds will fall below 12k next season. They are not "oscillating" they are declining steadily year on year. it would take an April fool to ignore the bleading obvious.
Now an average of 12k with a 12 team comp, that might be acceptable however why not 13k still? South Sydney would pretty much guarantee an average attendance of 13k with three derbies each season and South Sydney shouldn't be far behind that.

+x@ pippinu You'd have to work at the ffa to take that opinion. 13,000 average crowds are not beyond the code so accepting the stagnation is not acceptable. And if you add the net effect of the extra crowds at ANZ the crowds are falling even further this season possibly below 12k which should be alarming. If the trend continues then next season we will see an 11,xxx average. Wanderers, Roar and Sydney are all under performing and everyone else bar Victory could do better. The first step in finding a solution is to acknowledge the problem, not redefine the problem as a positive (that's the FFAs way of thinking). And the ffa end this season with more disenfranchised fans than last season when they had a boycott, the HAL needs some new thinking but the ffa don't seem to have it. To consistently fall in the 12,300 to 12,500 zone means that some seasons it will push up towards a 13,000 average, and in other seasons it will fall closer to 12,000, and I would say long term that's a more than acceptable outcome. In fact, if we can maintain averages above 12k when we go to 12 teams, that would represent an absolutely outstanding outcome.

+xAverage attendances:2016/17 = 12,382 and falling weekly 2015/16 = 12,3092014/15 = 12,5112013/14 = 13,025Looks like we're on for our fourth consecutive fall in average attendances. Given the boost the two ANZ derbies gave attendances this season the FFA should be concerned. Hopefully they've got something better lined up in marketing than "you've gotta have a team" and "a summer of football" and "the business end of the season" ... it's the worst marketing of any code and it's just not working. Another way of looking at it is that we have a good degree of stability and consistency with attendances constantly falling in the 12,300 to 12,500 zone, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's a very good average attendance figure to be able to maintain over the long term, especially when viewed in global terms.

Pretty good crowds all round, it's just the Nix and the Mariners keeping the average down. To average around 9k this time of year is probably par for course.

In four of the last five seasons, we've had two seasons fall on exactly 12,300, another two seasons fall on exactly 12,500 (including the current one), which seems to be a fair indicator of where the natural level of A-League attendances sit (which aren't all that bad to be perfectly honest).

+x+x+xdid some stats in another thread before i realised this was here... looking at what percentage of people turn up compared to memberships. this is up to the game last night. numbers pulled from the wiki. ------------attendance---membership--------%-------------#games on FTA victafl......23588........26138...............90.24%........4 wsw........19460........19696...............98.80%........5 sfc..........16087........12319..............130.58%.......7 roar.........14861.........7050............... .210.79% .....8 city.........10866........13023............... 83.43%.........8 perth........10570........8515...............124.13%........3 adelaide...10160.......10088...............100.71..........7 jets...........8583.........8678................98.91%........3 ccm..........7512.........6258...............120.04%........1 nux...........6293.........4791...............131.35%.......lol As i have repeatedly said on here, people will not buy memberships when clubs have such big grounds. You want a ticket for any game in Australia and New Zealand you will get it as easy as that. Maybe sometimes at AAMI and i stress sometimes only. People will pick and choose when they go knowing they will get in. The main reason i and many others buy membership is to support our clubs , but it is also a much cheaper option over the season. $200 for 14 home games and free public transport is fantastic value in anyone's language. i think that position is more common down south.. a lot of afl supporters a big club supporters and buy memberships. i grew up in qld and most big bronco supporters that i knew would never buy memberships but still go to plenty of games. i think there is a cultural difference in the way we support and the numbers kind of support this while that is true, it doesn't explain the Sydney Swans having 56,000 members in 2016 (although I admit am always sceptical about AFL membership figures).

+x+xWe are very close to matching last seasons average - they had an FFA inspired fan boycott and this season has Cahill, Yoshi and big Sydney derbies. ffs, what a cock up 🙁 Last season's run in was far more exciting though. The top three is already decided. The last 16 rounds last season was the highest we have had with the current 10 clubs.

+xWhat I'm genuinely surprised at by this weekend's crowds is that Melbourne City got a bigger crowd than both Adelaide and Western Sydney, especially since our crowd was below expected.City and WSW should really be getting 10k+, though Adelaide's is obviously fair enough. Agree. Welcome to the forum.

According to Wookie's figures, our attendances are still up on last season.
Good result.

$200 for 14 home games and free public transport is fantastic value in anyone's language. i think that position is more common down south.. a lot of afl supporters a big club supporters and buy memberships. i grew up in qld and most big bronco supporters that i knew would never buy memberships but still go to plenty of games. i think there is a cultural difference in the way we support and the numbers kind of support this Agreed, it helps explain how the Victory got huge membership numbers from the second season onwards (obviously a winning second season also helped, but they've grown heaps since then).

+xMy point is that from the perspective of uni student me 8-9 years ago that became a passionate follower of Sydney FC who now often pays a lot of money (from my perspective) to follow my team around the country, these prices are extortionate. I think that with these prices Sydney is only hurting its ability to gain new long term supporters. I live about 20km (half an hour) from the nearest cinema, the SFS is about an hour further away. The suitable stadiums near me are included in the Southern Expansion bid. It is about the same travel time and cost to each Kogarah, Shark Park and Wollongong Stadiums, so that bid is perfect for me. A few years ago I had a very similar discussion to what you have been describing with friends that used to come to quite a few games a year with me. They haven't for a while. As soon as a GA ticket is more than $20-$25 (fees included) it becomes a decision to go to a game and you start to weigh up what else you can do with that money then you start thinking about time and other factors. If you are diehards you may think like Waz but at least half of an average attendance tends not to be the diehards (unless you have won 3 games all year...)
