What result do we want with UAE vs Saudi? A draw wouldn't change anything. I feel Saudi winning would be good in that Japan should beat them in 4 weeks while we should beat Thailand meaning we can pull further ahead of UAE who seem the bigger threat.
Saudi will stuff up somewhere before we meet them in June. I think Iraq and Thailand with their home games will help us.

Saudis won 3/0 I think
With Japan at home against the Saudis in November the Socceroos should be well placed as long as we can defeat Thailand away.
Iran defeating South Korea in the other group leaves them 3rd for now. Theirs appears to be a 3 horse race while ours is 4 for now.

FIFA World Cup winner Marcello Lippi has been appointed head coach of the China national team, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) announced on its website.
Lippi replaced Gao Hongbo, who resigned earlier this month after China’s slim hopes of qualifying for 2018 FIFA World Cup was dealt a further blow as the East Asians lost 2-0 to Uzbekistan. China have picked up only a point from the last four games in Russia 2018 Asian third qualifying round.
The Italian manager was supposed to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari at Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrade next season but will instead take over the China national team effective Saturday.
"Following the CFA's regulations on the national team coach selection process, and after friendly mutual discussions, the Chinese Football Association officially announces that Mr. Marcello Lippi will become the head coach of the China national football team from October 22," said the CFA statement.
The 68-year-old manager won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Italy, five Serie A titles, the UEFA Champions League with Juventus and three straight Chinese Super League titles with Guangzhou Evergrande who he also helped win the 2013 AFC Champions League.
Lippi will be presented to the media during a news conference on October 28.

In other recent friendlies for AFC teams Iraq drew 0-0 away to Jordan and Syria defeated Singapore 2-0 in Malaysia (where they play their "home" WCQ vs Iran on the 15th), UAE defeated Bahrain 2-0 at home, Iran defeated PNG 8-1 at home and Uzbekistan defeated Jordan 1-0 at home. 2 more friendlies are set for tonight - Japan play Oman (edit won 4-0) and South Korea play Canada (edit won 2-0).

This is an international matchday where a friendly for Australia would have been possible. I think they have decent value. Playing Laos or Camboadia probably wouldn't have given us much but perhaps we should have set something up in Malaysia. Resting and training together is also very important. It's always confusing if we have a bad performance that maybe an extra game together could have helped but then we question the overall fitness after playing a somewhat meaningless match.

Last night's draw really puts Australia back into the pack after the great start (ie 2 out of 2 wins) in September.
At this stage Australia is likely to need another 10-12 points from it's remaining 5 games to qualify direct from the group.
Clearly the away game to Iraq on March 23 will be key in regards to getting some momentum but it is absolutely vital that we win our home games against UAE on March 28 and Saudi Arabia on June 8, so that we can re-establish a top 2 position.
I am also hopeful that Thailand can snatch points against the Saudis and UAE in March and June WCQs.

No one really pulling away in the other group.
Will KSA win in Thailand and against Iraq? should we assume Japan will get maximum points. It's very unlikely that someone will rocket to the top. It could be a drag with all top teams drawing their next matches and very little movement in the table. We must beat Iraq and UAE to really get going.

The way UAE play gives some hope. If Iraq can hold Japan away then they can frustrate Saudi. We should even be in this situation. Saudi had lucky penalties at the end in the first 2 games. UAE shouldn't have won in Japan while Japan needed a 96th minute winner against Iraq. Japan should have beaten us while we really needed a win in Thailand or Iraq. In Dubai Cahill should have been called for the push before the goal. I know it's all hindsight and it is how it is. A lot of crazy moments in this qualifying.

Despite our series of draws the UAE game on Tuesday is really a major opportunity to get back on track.
As stated above it would be handy for other teams to take points from the Saudis and/or Japanese.
Losing to us would put UAE 4 points behind us with 3 games to go which would pretty much put them out of the running for a direct WC spot. Hopefully they can still snag a point from the Saudis in the 2nd last match which is their only home game remaining.
Given that the Saudis have to travel back from Thailand while Iraq have a shorter trip from Iran to Saudi I have my fingers crossed Iraq can pull off a draw early Wednesday morning. If not then hopefully they can pull off a draw in Iran against the Japanese in June.
I don't think we should expect the Thais to get a result on Tuesday night away to Japan.
One game at a time, let's just hope that we finally play well AND get a win !
