I agree ... all those countries have starting moving towards 2% as they now see the  threat from Russia,,,,,,but even if they got to 2%, those countries can't defender themself with out USA or with out creating a single European army , and no body in USA, UK or Australia wants that, because we know who will end up in control  of a single European army

Unfortunately some people don't understand how precarious diplomatic relations are at the moment around the world.

We should be learning mandarin. It's the most spoken language in our part of the world. And yes, we do live in Asia. We all watch the US election, but these days what the President of China does matters more. 

Just remember this - more than half the world's population lives in our immediate north and north west. In fact that's always been true. They fell behind for 200 years during the Industrial revolution and age of colonialism, but they have now caught up.

It doesn't matter how many racist Hansonites there are in our country. China is our biggest trading partner. japan is second.

India, China, Japan, Indonesia and south-east asia are growing and will be paying our wages for the next fifty years whether we like it or not. A peaceful and prosperous Asia means a peaceful and prosperous Australia. An Asia without peace and security is terrible for us. 

Trump's election is going to force a massive rethink of our foreign policy. If America led by Trump wants to blow up the Asian economy to restore their global hegemony, that's not in our economic or national security interests. The ANZUS alliance is a relic of a time when we feared Japanese militarism, and then communism. The only reason we hold onto the US alliance is that we fear that China's rise may not be peaceful, or that they will want to interfere in our political system.

If we can trade with China while retaining our democratic political system and security, we'll be sweet.

Yes pretty much this. I have concerns about their interference in our domestic affairs, it's happening a lot now but you'd be naive to think that the US aren't doing it also. It's very complex but Trump's election is a big opportunity for China.

add the fact, China never had democracy.....let have a single party, that control the country, with out any right for the  individual over the good of the state...

Donald Trump won by going to the people. Night after night and actually going to them. He abandoned identity politics and united the nation. All this pathetic crying we are seeing on our media is from big city elites who have no idea.

The United States is not a democracy. It is a constitutional representative republic. The individual (not the minority) is protected by the constitution from the mob rule of democracy. And today, the republic has risen once again to protect itself from the tyranny of the elites.

Certain things will not change. The world is in a diplomatic precarious position but the US Alliance is very important to Australia and the world.

Ardtho is actually right. Russia and America are in a Proxy War right now. There is a lot at stake. Put in is testing the waters for a Eastern European invasion. This is what happens in Europe. Fact of the matter is, we already have a Hitler in power and he is waiting for a sign of weakness before the go that extra step.

The other issue is South China Sea. Australia and the world can't afford the annexation of International Sea Lanes in violation of UNCLOS.
