He did say it and its stupid on his part, demonstrates a complete lack of humility. He could have spoken about the clubs juniors etc and explained what the club is without trotting out that line, but you will notice all these bids seem to use, they are going down the port adelaide path and it wont work.

Despite that at least he didnt trot out the " we will be the next wanderers" line, that should be an automatic ban from bidding lol

For the record, i'd actually like to see South melbourne in the A league. I just want the club officials to embrace and promote the future and not try to set up an us vs them mentality off the pitch.

I've been quoted in newspapers before and I know that sometimes journo's put crap in that you did not say at all, but if Bill Papasteriadis did once again trot out the "we are a real club not a franchise line" as attributed in the Herald Sun article, then I can only say it's antagonistic and poor form on his part. Instead of trying to put the current A league clubs and their supporters offside, I'd think it would be better if Bill just said THANKYOU to the current A league clubs and their supporters for taking football in this country to places his club was never able to and asked nicely if his (so called) 'real' club could join the league.

SMH has a great bid but I can't see the FFA letting them in. A lot of time has passed, but I have a feeling the FFA still hasn't got past the old "effnik" thing. Hope I am wrong.

The FFA are Old Sockah stooges run by the ALF.

Any pressure (such as what SMFC are doing with Roberto Carlos) on the FFA will help to force the powers that be into action. Can only be good for the sport.

This is clearly one of the stronger bids along with the Sth Sydney bid. It is probably even stronger as Sth Sydney is not a stand alone bid.
If I could have my wish I would use both these clubs to build an A2 league, but make no mistake, they are both A-league quality bids.

Bids will only ever be as strong as the little box at the end that Fox Sports accountant gets to tick

Great work by the club to remain on the front foot.
As a fan, I echo their statements where we would be happy to be in a National 2nd Division, with hopefully P/R in the future, a whole "walk before we run" sentiment.
Im still skeptical that expansion ever happens considering the powers that be are more focused on profits and income as apposed to the actual sport, but I guess never say never.
Around 2007 after a few years in the VPL, I came to accept that this is now our future and we would never ever be back in the spotlight again, but after the last few years of what we have achieved both on and off the field, I wont say "never" again.

The issue with an a2/b league is that the majority of these bids are in the A league or bust category, I think south today were the only ones who even mentioned interest in a 2nd division.

Counteract that with all the potential second div sides who have no interest in bidding for the HAL

A second div is happening

Release the criteria FFA, quality bids are out there. Release a criteria and watch the bids really make their moves. Having RC as manasger is a big positive. Name alone would do wonders for the club/ league. His connections would be second to none seen in this country.

Clearly we are miles ahead of any other bid especially here in Melbourne. Getting Roberts Carlos out here shows intent and seriousness. If anything the club will make the FFA look like the complete jokers that they are should an 'inferior' bid get up. We could basically be ready to go for the start of the next season should we ever got asked. Standing still like the FFA are currently doing means you are going backwards and getting overtaken by the competition. Fucking idiots.

Far too many strong bids to not have an aleague-2

Sort of. All A-League bids are for the A-League and I'm not sure you would have the same amount of enthusiasm from investors to enter a 2nd division. It would still exist but not at the same level and bids like the Southern Expansion and Tasmania may walk away.

Major publicity stunt clearly, but I think the fact they got him out here is the real statement in all of this, coaching the juniors tonight must be a huge thrill for all those kids. I like the fact that out of all the bids it was only in our press conference that a 2nd division was mentioned as well.

Gotta say they are hard to ignore .. rich history... AP as former coach... own stadium,... and capital....

Casey Danny is also strong ... how can you leave either out ...

This is why we need a "B" league or whatever other name you wanta call it.

Brazil and Real Madrid star Roberto Carlos wants to coach South Melbourne

WORLD football great Roberto Carlos has opened formal talks with South Melbourne to become their inaugural coach should they return to Australia’s national stage.

Evoking memories of South Melbourne’s bold capture of world football great Ferenc Puskas in 1989, the Brazil and Real Madrid legend fronted a press conference at Lakeside Stadium flanked by South Melbourne chiefs.

Roberto Carlos trained South Melbourne’s juniors on Monday while over 500 guests will attend a function at Crown Palladium on Tuesday, as their A-League push continues.

Carlos juggles in his dress shoes at Lakeside Stadium.

South Melbourne bid chairman Bill Papastergiadis revealed that formal talks were underway and after coaching clubs in Russia, Turkey and India, Roberto Carlos admitted the job appealed to him.

“Many famous people came through this club and it’s an important club in world football,’’ Roberto Carlos said.

“What I’ve seen here has gratified me a lot. When you have the idea of winning, (creating) champions, try and sign the best players you can, the club is clearly very ambitious and has the winning mentality and that’s satisfied me.

“My life is football, if I go to a club and marry a project I go there to win.

Carlos at South Melbourne's home ground Lakeside Stadium.

“I’d like to thank the club for inviting me here, I was very curious about Australia. I’m very happy with what I’ve seen, the complex, the people.

“The most important thing now is for the club to join the A-League. It may be difficult, but South Melbourne is a great story.’’

The former National Soccer League club has been vocal and ambitious in its bid to join the A-League, though neither South nor Roberto Carlos ruled out joining a second division, with the Champions League and FIFA World Cup winner quipping he may pull the boots back on.

While Roberto Carlos acknowledged the fine work of title-winning coach Chris Taylor, who was in the room, Papastergiadis also revealed that there would be a role for South’s current coach at the club.

The World Cup winner in action for Brazil.

“South has commenced negotiations with Roberto Carlos to coach our club when we enter the A-League,’’ Papastergiadis said.

“Roberto Carlos and South Melbourne is a match made in heaven. (We) are the FIFA Oceania Club of the Century, it’s the champions of the men’s and women’s seniors (top state tier), the best junior club in the state and its own purpose stadium, a $70 million facility.

“It’s not a business, it’s not a franchise. It’s a real club

“We were the only club in the previous national soccer league to be in that division for the entire period it was set up.

“We’re also hearing stories about the B-League. We’re willing, ready and able to participate in a B-League when it’s ready to be formed.’’

well another couple of teams are needed..
Doubts now raised over Tasmania after this article .. In a nutshell the tasmianan govt is pushing for its own team if the Gold Coast ALF team is to fold.

Can't see us pulling much of a crowd today, 50mm of rain expected to fall in Melbourne and our results have been crap, if we win today should be a good Easter Monday crowd against knights next week, 11 of our next 13 games are at home. Having the season start in feb and not playing a home game until April is scandalous. We had just under 4,000 at our home opener last season, will be a miracle if we hit 1,000 this time.
