About par for City vs Nix, I would have thought, perhaps a small bump for the Timmy factor.

Happy enough with those numbers against the day night cricket. Always going to be a touch lower competing so if we're pulling 70K for our Sat night games it's alright.

Good thing cricket in the summer is unusual

We are at the time of the year where any ratings can be vindicated by simply opening the TV guide and citing what was on any other channel at the time - and then claim everybody else in Australia is unable to perform the same action

It shows a total disrespect for the audience to persist with Basheer. He has without doubt the worst voice for commentating.

I just don't find any cricket good to watch anymore, just not the same as the old days with the legends of Australian Cricket. I couldn't care less about the current mob of players.

The current Australian test team are just like a bunch of EPL footballers - but lacking any empathy, insight or ability to think coherently.

Given the use of term "lads" I'm not sure if you are referring to the Australian cricket team or the English soccer team?

Basheers voice is not the issue. He get's it wrong so much and misses so much of the action. What's worse is we also have really poor commentary on the radio here in melbourne. Some basic stuff like they don't describe left or right side of the field, they don't describe what is happening in the play or off the ball, eg is it a 5 metre pass or a 50 metre pass? Is rojas making a run out wide on the wing and in space? No, they just don't know how to call the play. Honestly you'd think they'd get some training on how to call or at least watch some good telecasts and take some notes.

Wookie's update post round 8

http://www.footyindustry.com/?page_id=2576

Still beating last year in round for round comparison in viewers (4% this week)

Attendance we've been ripping some negatives the last few weeks though

That 4% you state throws me. That is just for the round. In total we are more than 30% higher than we were last year.

Apologies for throwing you

The relative difference for each round compared to same round last year is:
R1-58%
R2-46%
R3-46%
R4-33%
R5-25%
R6-27%
R7-2% (though with one less game)
R8-4%

But yeah still 31% over all due to the big first month

Decline is a bit of a worry but maybe the buzz will come back after Timmy's winning goal last night

The average rating for each club after 8 rounds for the last 3 seasons is listed below.  Unfortunately I don't have data for earlier seasons and 8 rounds is as far as I have for 14/15 and 15/16.

14/15 15/16 16/17
Sydney 113 68 96
Wanderers 91 64 95
Victory 84 71 102
Adelaide 85 65 83
City 79 70 90
Brisbane 72 62 94
Perth 67 54 68
Newcastle 58 51 63
Mariners 56 53 63
Wellington 50 49 64

Wow, for some reason I thought last years figures were around 120k mark. This shows a few things. 1) that when you put top 2 on the a-league ladder head to head in a cup final it will rate. 2) When you have a marketable marquee also playing in a final, it will rate. 3) When it gets pushed in the media (big spread in the sydney and melbourne papers) it will rate. 4) When the two biggest cities are represented, it will rate.

PS last year it was on a Saturday and it rated half as much, so the push to Saturday doesn't make that much difference, in fact could be argued that it's worse as it is flooded amongst all the other football and sport in general.

Mid week may struggle to rate for general round of play or cup match, but if it's a final, it will entice even the neutrals to tune in as there is a trophy on the line, and again no other sport to compete with.

It's hard to tell what last night's game would have rated on a Saturday night though, but I agree it certainly helped that it was a Sydney team v a Melbourne team.

Would be interesting to see what it would rate on a Saturday night without any other fixtures for the weekend too. It might be the next step needed to promote the cup as a nationally celebrated event, maybe simulcast on FTA? With some clever fixturing (it only takes 5 midweek games added over the entire season e.g. Perth play in NSW on the Friday, then in Wellington on Wednesday and again in NSW on Sunday), FFA could have the final on an exclusive weekend to give the occasion the pomp it deserves. That way, it would hardly matter which two HAL teams are in the final..

Its what some people have been saying for a long time. Nobody gives a fuck about a balanced competition. Who gives a shit if CCM or NCJ can potentially win the title every year?

The viewers want to see big teams and big players. It is proven time and time and time again. Sydney v Melbourne featuring Cahill was a winner

Every cent the FFA spend on this ridiculous balanced competition model which punishes the big teams and holds back potential is wasted

If the salary cap was scrapped, we may lose 3k-4k of rusted on regional fans, but we'd more than make up for it with the current untapped fanbase

2016 - 153,000
2015 - 82,000
2014 - 104,000

Like the main season itself, if we could eliminate 2015-16, this would be a natural progression from 2014.

I've no idea how you managed to read 'scrap the cap' in the above sentiments. Again, you've presented notions in your mind as virtually 'facts', and for the 'record' nobody will give a shit when they see a 'Melbourne City v Shenhua Jets United' FFA cup final for a 17th consecutive time in the year 2038 either.

WOW.  Massive ratings !
Will probably need to give it more status by playing the final on weekend in future.

Was it the Cahill factor?

Was it 2 major city teams?

Why did last years final rate so low compared to this year?

Is this a chance to go to free to air in future dealings?
