Ratings from yesterday morning:
  10h10 hours agoMon TV 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup SBS 56k: Metro 39k Regional 17k2 replies1 retweet2 likes

This doesn't mention ratings from Optus either. I prefer Optus as I didn't have to use data and thus sleep in my bed.

You can diss middy all you want. But the man bleeds football and you imitators would not be worthy be addressed as friends. Fuck off foes.

A useful contribution.

Inside Sport should be proud of its mods and the quality of debate on this board.

Football would be no different, that is why in a start up product which the A-League is to FTA TV, when you are up against established and well connected competition ... you need to show case yourself in the best possible way..

While the difference  was never going to be massive it was wasted opportunity.

When the A League hit the FTA network it was 8 years old. It was by no means a start up product

I agree we needed to showcase ourselves in the best possible way but it was about making a balanced choice between having premium exclusive content on Fox for money, or better games on FTA for accessibility. I don't think Friday night content was a bad decision, but they could have worked a few more Melbourne and Sydney games into the fixturing

The A League can easily boost its appeal by lift all the self imposed restraints. We have a team with more money than the FFA ready and willing to take our league to a level we have never seen before. But there is too much fear the Australian market will reject anything other than a rigged balanced model

I don't see why we should be paying millions of dollars for some ex NRL wash in to tell us what isn't possible

We know what casual fans want - big games, big teams, big players
We know what the broader rusted on community want - all inclusiveness

We aren't going to get ratings and positivity by a 13 year power point presentation of trying to ram an obsolete American model down our throats

agree with your points however as we have discussed previously the trend lines are heading north and while we do not agreed on a key % points, we both use the same models be it from different perceptions ... if anything we have a time variation even that is not that large.

My issue with viewership is,  shows be they direct entertainment or a sporting contest have casual viewers who drop in for a look see.

Marketing folk will tell you that for the casual to become a greater consumer and perhaps become one day a Hard Core Rusted On... needs to be lead to it, have it explained, enjoy the experience, assume he / she is watching something of quality.

I actually agree with this point but there is one important thing that needs to be understood:

Football is not a TV show

Interest in sport is social and cultural. You have just as much chance of having a non football fan take up the code with cross promotion as you would a Jew become a Muslim from cross promotion

The interest in sport (for most people) happens in the real world. In the lunch rooms at work or the grounds at school. No amount of cross promotion from channel 10 will stop the next Brazil vs Argentina ad from featuring an AFL ball. This is what you are up against. Social and cultural barriers. Hard wired interests.

Changing the perception of our game is not going to be media driven. When people refuse to watch SBS because it stands for "Soccer,Bloody Soccer" I find it hilarious people think we'll have better luck if the sport was on a channel they do watch

I agree that we need a positive image but this needs to happen out there. The A League (for where the code was before it started) has made incredible grounds in terms of becoming mainstream - all of which occurred when the game was an exclusive payTV product

Knowing the game, understanding the rules, picking a team, understanding the importance of the A League compared to other leagues - it all happens before people tune in (unless they are unwilling participants due to other household members)

The VFL / SANFL / WAFL are all on channel 7 proper yet these sports have a predictably low uptake. Everybody knows they are semi professional second tiers that nobody at work or school will be talking about. Contrast this with the NRL State Of Origin which many Victorians watch (and no other game) due to the social interest. People will naturally try to put some context and meaning behind what they watch. Not just play roulette with the remote. And contrary to popular belief there is more than 1 channel per household

The image of the A League can only be changed through great work done in community engagement and acceptance

Step 1: Lock everybody out of the game
Step 2: Restrict the quality of the players that can play here
Step 3: Rig the league so small teams can play on the big stage too

Alternatively we can present a serious competitive all inclusive national league, and make big games affordable and more accessible

I know this will be hard to understand for you ... so I will try and use small words so as not to confuse ..

You see in Australia, there are many people, some of these people don't like or watch sport.

Some people who like sport only follow one code.  I will explain this a little more for you, they may like AFL and only watch AFL.

Some people like Football and watch Football..

Some people [I hope this bits not to advanced for you] are refereed to as """ Hard Core Rusted ON""" these people will follow their chosen code and go to great lengths to do so.

Again hoping not to confuse you, some people are called casuals.... this means they drift in and out and have not at this point in their life become a ""'Hard Core Rusted ON""'

These casuals fans who are wanting a look see, mostly don't have in-depth knowledge of the sporting code they are watching... especially if compared to the Hard Core Rusted ON.

Just to tweek a little ... most people start as casuals very few from the first game they watch or play become Hard Core Rusted ON...

Marketing folk will tell you that for the casual to become a greater consumer and perhaps become one day a Hard Core Rusted On... needs to be lead to it, have it explained, enjoy the experience, assume he / she is watching something of quality.

So most would say, negative reporting constantly saying what you are watching is shit .... actually does have an affect ... and a bad one..

You appear not to agree... aside from hurling insults ... care to explain how by constantly being negative and saying its shit, increases viewership ... or has little effect.... as this is what you indicate ...

BTW if you really want to start an argument with me on researching the net ... hhhhmmmm ... my second biggest client runs a media company, they write some software that is of particular use to all TV networks, but by far the biggest side of their business is researching for all the TV networks net coverage of certain things or as advised ... but you may have superior knowledge to a company employing 8 people solely involved on net research, trends then again show us your knowledge.

Nup. All of that is just more senile waffle from you.  Back to school gramps.

People are either already watching SBS because theyre HAL fans, or theyre not.

What you suggest is this - that there are non-HAL casuals watching SBS, but then they suddenly hear how negative Culina is being, and so they switch off forever and our ratings are damaged.

It dumb. Even for you, its really dumb.

And its hilarious seeing you lecture people about going to school to study. Tell us again to Google "a league" so we can see how popular the A-League is you nuffy.

The radio station was an example ... one of many... it was purely said to highlight what could have been done...

As to Culina ... OK your suggesting a person saying everything is shit will get people to watch ... and will have no effect.... when you leave school study a subject called marketing ... it will help you...

Midfielder still pressing the same shite. He honestly believes that all those casuals switched onto SBS, but when they heard Culina being negative they thought "hey bugger this, if HE'S negative, then it's goodnight from me!"I love the local Gosford radio 'explanation' as well. Yes, THAT was the reason SBS got such shite ratings. Because of the local Gosford radio snub. Why oh why didn't they just play ball with the Gossie DJ???!!!F Me the delusion knows no bounds.

But SBS gets bugger all ratings across the board - what kind of promotion were you hoping for?

The expectation was at two levels, first was the call and panel would be inclusive and positive.... inclusive being easy to understand ...  Those early years Culina and others never had a good word always this was wrong etc... the explaining of what went wrong needed a person of reasonable Football knowledge lets say the traditional SBS Football demographic but to the casual drop in it was way to complex ... FFA & Fox wanted the new so be far less complex and far more positive.

The second level was at the use your connections, SBS never pushed themselves into the commercial market and they had plenty of things they could have done... you got the impression they did not like dealing with non believers or people with limited knowledge. ... best example I have is on the Coast in the first two years of their broadcast 2GO by far the biggest radio station on the Coast where the radio station supporting Football. .. 2GO throw everything at it ... so much so but for all home games they had what they called "Count Down to the Mariners""" this went something like this four hours out from when the match started every single break be it an ad break, news break ... but every single break they discussed the game... they were screaming out to interview anyone with a Football background to come and talk to them... as the match got closer in the last hour it was full on ... maybe 20 + minutes ... now the DJ's that did this were not hugely knowledgeable in Football .... Not once in two years and maybe 30 games did SBS appear on the show,... Fox people did at times ...

Pippinu, there were three international games. Two of those involved a team composed mainly of ex HAL players.Over 220k people watched those games three times within a week on fta alone. That's beyond idle curiosity.
Casuals aren't going to watch three Football games ,withing a week ,unless they have some real interest in Football.50k dropped off for the last game ,but still managed to sit through two games.
But based on SBS average ratings of say 60k.That means 160-210 casuals.Probably 110-160k who don't watch any HAL.
Why the hell can't we get those casuals?
A big Melb or Sydney Derby should be able to get those casuals. But it's up to FFA,the clubs, fans and TEN,to make sure the players and playing standard makes them come back.

I don't know about Melbourne but here in the Sunshine state,I have seen zero promotion for any of the last three games.Bit we have had ratings in the mid 200's for three games on fta.How that translates to HAL,I don't know. But at the very least it suggests proper marketing and getting some bigger games on TEN ,would interest those 200k plus football fans.If Ten managed to get 200k on average(no harm dreaming),you would think that would be good, considering SBS was barely getting 50k.If TEN also got 50k,then it would prove football ratings for HAL on FTA are pointless and will be the same regardless of the channel.

I think you are on the money...

Without trying to go over old ground well discussed elsewhere... Frank Lowy got the Federal Government to give SBS a special sports grant specifically to buy the rights for the A-League... One of the untruths peddled by SBS is they paid out of their own money, while strictly true, but in actually it was from a special sports grant Frank Lowy arranged..

At the time the government wanted the grant to go to the ABC ... but Frank insisted SBS... part of the deal was SBS would be hugely positive and contact other media and cross promote... without going over the poor games allocated by FFA in the first year, SBS until Bridges came on board had a series of callers who just constantly bagged out the play the coaches...Fox where beyond angry as they too had argued it should be SBS ... Fox assumed that big rating on SBS would increase their subscriptions.

While accepting all the errors made by both Fox and FFA in the deal ... SBS never did the positive happy happy joy joy days of sunshine, lolly pops and sugar coated lemon drops... which is what was considered necessary to help grow the game...

10 will be positive... god only knows what SBS reporting will be if the Southern Bid does not get a shirt.

But a positive 10 promoting will add to the rating of this there is no doubt.

There's a big difference between a big one-off game featuring our national team and the best national team in the world, and season long weekly club games.

I don't know about Melbourne but here in the Sunshine state,I have seen zero promotion for any of the last three games.Bit we have had ratings in the mid 200's for three games on fta.How that translates to HAL,I don't know. But at the very least it suggests proper marketing and getting some bigger games on TEN ,would interest those 200k plus football fans.
If Ten managed to get 200k on average(no harm dreaming),you would think that would be good, considering SBS was barely getting 50k.If TEN also got 50k,then it would prove football ratings for HAL on FTA are pointless and will be the same regardless of the channel.

I'm just saying that mid-week is actually prime TV viewing time, better than the weekend.  You seemed to imply the reverse in an earlier post.

Wonder how many viewed the games around the world.

Only for all those family shows, the football was top by some margin for subscription channels and also 2nd highest for non main fta channels for the day.

Mid week evenings is prime time ratings period - that's when the most people are watching TV.
