FWIW I supply support changing the day. The best thing I've seen is it being on the last Friday in January so we always get a long weekend.

I'm not just talking about the Australia Day thing (though for what it's worth, you, Munrubz and only one or two others were the only people on there having a reasonable discussion), rusty is using the same argument here about renewables.

It's just that no one is pretending that making one thing better is going to make everything ok. I think every issue should be treated on its merits, if you disagree with it own it and don't use the "if we change this people will complain about something else". 

Will be much higher in Qld for the state election as well. 

If Aboriginal want to change Australia day they need to completely change their approach.  Rather than burning Australian flags and calling everybody an invader and racist, they should instead approach Australians in a consultative and courteous manner and explain in a dispassionate manner why they feel the date should be changed and why it affects them .  But of course when you go around burning flags and calling people convicts and racists it just makes people impervious to your cause.

The thing was, once Tony Abbott became PM he went from being an 'attack dog' Opposition Leader to someone who was uncomfortable in being forthright as a PM, ie his body language changed

PM is such a difficult transition, Billy Shorten is enjoying the luxury of being opposition leader where he can attack and be negative, but he wont last 3 days if he was PM

I can't really agree with that, Turnbull has sold out his own beliefs just so he can be PM, he's achieved nothing. 

Only a few do it, painting all those that want to move Australia Day as people who hate the country just shows your ignorance.

It's a deflection (just like the "change this then they'll just complain about something else" argument), there's plenty of people who have put the argument forward in the manner he's asked.

I remember watching a satire piece about Australia Day from an Indigenous Australian perspective in high school ... this would have been in the late 90's. So Aboriginal people and representatives have been constructively putting their objections forward for over 20 years that I am aware of. Perhaps the reason for the recent escalation in protests is because they have been ignored for over 20 years??

The ones who are outspoken about changing Australia are generally the ones who call it Invasion Day and live their lives with the complex that white people are some oppressive group that is responsible for all of the Aboriginal social and economic problems.  

I just can't support any changes where the primary argument is to spit vitriol and induce guilt for being a white person who was born here as if we somehow have less entitlement to this land than do black people.

Agree ... I thought Turnbull had some good points and ideas when he sat under Abbott and thought that he would turn around some of the disastourous decisions that Abbott made. However, he became a mere puppet upon becoming PM and as rightly said sold out his own beliefs (and not even in a diplomatic or for the people of Australia way ... but simply to appease the Liberal masters).

Fake virtue signalling.  You know full well there will never be any "negotiation" over the mass transfer of land (thanks to the righties) , but by lending it your support to this imaginary ideal you get to claim the moral high ground , as well as keeping the land you stole.  If you were serious you would approach the aboriginal land council to begin "negotiations" rather than hiding behind the likes of Pauline to defend your land rights.

I don't think the native title claims will ever extend to private land due to the fact that most Indigenous people didn't document (demarcate) their land to the satisfaction of courts in Australia (the Mabo decision pretty much found this as the islanders had actually marked out their individual lands). Also the government would have to compensate all private land owners for any land lost.
