+xThis is honestly so cringeworthy that I love it with the entirety of my being. So much yes! Somebody please bring the Breakers back. God knows the Jets need a bit of inspiration and maybe a local derby might do that.

The most cringeworthy thing is that Brisbane haven't done more to capitalise of the rivalry earlier, even if this is a pretty lazy way of doing it.
Roar got 32k crowds two years running against Sydney in the regular season back in 06/07 and 07/08. Where did they all go?

+xWanker? Manners please. I am in Queensland and Roar don't represent me. So the "we are Queensland" slogan they use is crap. You are not passionate Waz. You sound more like a wanker. Attack the ball not the man please. It's ironic that in a thread about cringe, you have caused us all to cringe with that statement.

@ Caltex.
Toughen up petrol boy!
You don't speak for the 65,000 mainly regional school kids that have gone through the Roar schools program who will love this, or the supporters in cairns who were wrapped when Roar played up there, of the bundy/Rocky based supporters who drive for hours to get to a game or two a year, of the tens of thousands of regional bases folk who see Roar as their team even though they can't get to a live game .... lighten up, it's just marketing and it's their team as well, and it's just Moroon (which they all love whether we like it or not) and it's just one game, and it's marketing that's actually working.
P.S. And you can't play the "play the ball not the man" card and then call ME a wanker. It's one or the other lol

MT, There's a little video here: http://www.brisbaneroar.com.au/article/roar-honoured-to-wear-maroon/9dyveukvucr11aonvulp7wab0Which is Billy Moore talking to the Roar players at training this week, you can see the tv coverage taking place while he speaks as well as some of the press (the speach is simple but impressive) and this video is on its way to being the most shared video produced by Roar. Not bad. So it's easy to be critical of marketing (and many people are for the sake of it) but when marketing creates an awareness and a preference for a product, especially in new markets, it's doing something right. Football fans have a habit of whinging just for the sake of it in this country and we need to cut it out, it's just marketing folks - do we want to grow the game or not?

Queensland Roar failed. They had the chance.
Sydney v Roar is a nothing game for neutrals.
Roars biggest game, like most clubs is MV.

MT, Caltex,
I'm going to challenge your cancer/awkward marketing experiment statements for Roar/Sydney.
The Moroon and 'State v State' title has created a fair bit of debate amongst Roar fans with a vocal minority against it and their mantra is something like "we're not Rugby League" but ...
... Reds v Victory rivalry is built from the old AFL state of origin rivalry. And it's worked.
..... The Big Blue rivalry was built on two city's perpetual rivalry. And it's worked.
........Roar has failed unequivocally to create anything like these two. Even when GC and fury were in. So the intent of this is to start something and build on it.
It's obvious that the state v state rivalry with nsw is the only one that exists and can be leveraged, so it's the (only) place to start without trying to reinvent the wheel
In the past statements like "it's our state of origin" have failed badly only serving to highlight the gap between the two. So thankfully the club have dropped the direct link to SOO and instead focused on the state rivalry and - indirectly- drawing on SOO feelings.
As usual the target is not rusted on fans, like Yoshi, the target is fans who might go but probably won't without a reason or who have never been. And with limited marketing budget the reach to get to those fans is via free media not paid advertising
But to get media to cover you there has to be an angle, and that angles not the quality of football or the nature of this one game because they'll give that minimal coverage as usual the challenge is to get that and some ...
Some fans don't like the Moroon but the media are loving it. Tick.
Some fans don't like state v state but the media are lapping it up. Tick.
Some fans didn't like a SOO star turning up at Roar training but the media, tv in particular, covered it extensively. Tick.
So if this is an awkward marketing experiment it has increased awareness of Saturday's game outside of the usual crowd, it's increased media coverage with tv/radio/media/web activity higher than normal, Broncos have the largest following and it's reached into that base (and yes many leaguies also follow soccer) so, how awkward is awkward and who's the judge?
Many fans complain clubs don't market or advertise their games - then there's another set that complain when they do lol

+x+x* Excluding Tim Cahill The woman who won the first Masterchef is now CCMs #1 ticketholder Julie Goodwin, Born and raised at Niagara Park, 2 suburbs away from the CCM home ground and is a highly popular presenter on a Central Coast radio station. Is also still producing cookbooks (new one just out) and doing cooking appearances, so a nice link between our local media and our sponsors. Makes sense to me, what do you find awkward about it? She could become Australia's version of Delia Smith, who helped raise Norwich City's profile.

+x+xThat attempt by Victory to get kid fans to choose a mascot. Fortunately Victory is a club that listens to good sense and the campaign lasted literally about half an hour before never being heard from again.
Oh dear lol Shame it never happened :D
The second one I think would scare kids. 2 and 5 are gay, no question

Red Army AUFCLike Page STATEMENT | The Red Army regret to inform all #AUFC fans that there will not be a TIFO display prior to our Round 2 Grand Final re-match against Western SydneyWanderers FC next weekend. The Red Army were informed last week that Football Federation Australia and Coopers Stadium management will not allow ‘pullovers’ at matches classified as ‘high risk’. We are hugely disappointed at this as we were very much looking forward to unveiling a display befitting and also celebrating the club’s great achievement of becoming Hyundai A-Leaguechampions. We have been advised that for any display to be approved it must be held up with poles, similar to what the RBB and Cove have done is years previous. A good idea, in theory, but impractical and virtually impossible at Hindmarsh due to the nets that are present behind the goal. As a group we would like to stress that this is by no means a reflection on Adelaide United who have attempted to assist us. Unfortunately the decision rests not in their hands, but in the hands of Football Federation Australia and Coopers Stadium Management. Unfortunately under the current restrictions, TIFOs will perhaps be best saved for games at Adelaide Oval and when following the Reds interstate. We do ask #AUFC fans to bring as many flags and colour as possible to help create the best possible atmosphere Friday night! Come on you Reds! #RedArmyAUFC #AlwaysUnited
