+x@big Looks good. Not totally in love with the away kit but that is my personal preference. I wouldn't want a Socceroos replica either which you have stayed away from. White is an easy option but also you could have the same kit as the home kit just with a lighter green (with the same yellow/good). Perhaps something like the light green on this kit @scott picture host

+x+x+x+x+x+x+xWollongong wolves got crowds of 5,000 in the NSL reckon they struggled to support there own team. Would go down the Southern Sydney route but pick one stadium to play in. The A-League is a completely different animal. Football is bigger than ever before in this country. We will be absolutely fine down here. The only issue is a lot of people have become sick of waiting for a team and they've gone to support Sydney/WSW.. and the longer it takes I fear more and more will head that way So people dowm there support syd fc or wsw but wouldnt support a club that shares their location? Why would anyone down there follow wsw or syd fc? Afterall we are being told c9nstantly that wollongong ppl would only ever follow a stand alone bid. Can we also please stop using the nrl comparison as those were a case of combining existing clubs, whereas this would be an entirely new club made from scratch, a bit lile wsw. Same arguments were made with them too, with ppl saying no suppprters outside of parra would bother as they would be c9nsidered a parra team. Its different than the nrl. Im sure all the old school wolves supporters will be against it, but im sure this new club will pick up plenty of new fans if they do their c9mmunity engagement properly. The only thing that is truly c9ncerning about this bid is playing out of 3 stadiums (possibly) that is a shit idea. Choose a location and be done with it. Before they eventually build their own. People down here want to be apart of the A-league because they love the sport. I am one of them. People are becoming impatient and I know a lot of people who go to games in Sydney, especially the derby or other big games. Of course the more they go, the more it creates an affiliation with the team and give it enough time they will begin to support one of them. Its just natural. People here don't WANT to support a Sydney side, but they are becoming impatient waiting for a Wollongong side that they feel they HAVE to support a Sydney side because they want to get involved with the A-League and at the moment they can't do that in Wollongong. Personally, I am waiting for a team down here and I've been confident ever since the league began that one day eventually we will get our own team. Right now though, all this talk of a combined Sydney/Wollongong team does not bode well with me and others. We want our own team. We don't consider ourselves from Sydney. I didn't use the St George Illawarra Dragons example but that was a completely different situation.. both clubs needed each other at the time. And using one home ground with 3 different regions is probably the dumbest thing I've heard so far. Its one thing expecting people from Wollongong to support a combined Sydney side but its another to expect us to travel up to Cronulla or Kogarah every second week to watch us play. How would that possibly work? Do you really think that will help build a following from Wollongong, assuming our home ground is in either of the other two regions? Thanks champ tell me which football club in the world uses 3 different home grounds successfully? 3 stadiums is the dumbest thing ive heard and the fact u would back that makes me question ur whole belief on this topic. My point is.that if willongong are never getting a team, dont u think people would be more prepared to travel half the distance to watch a.team that at least has some affiliation with them than a wsw or syd fc? Of course they will. Especially when the club plays 2 home games agaisnt both syd fc ansmd wsw. Fans will flock there from wollongong. See people here say that people in the sth dont relate to ppl from the shire, well.i have some news for them, people from manly dont really relate to ppl that come from sothern parts of sydney or the west, yet sydney fc has fans from both those areas, and we still manage to avg the second highest attendances year in year out. A team purely from wollongong will get u 8-9k hardcore fans with very little room to grow. It will be similar version of newcastle jets which to be blatently honest doesnt excite me at all, and nor does it for most aleague gans when they watch newcastle on tv. They would become a niche club run on a budget alla ccm and newy. If i had to choose between a mega club with huge backing and broader representation alla fc and wsw, or a niche club like the gong alla ccm or newy, i know which one id rather watch play. I never, ever said I backed the 3 stadium idea. Bro, I don't even back the combined team. I back a single Wollongong bid which is 1 stadium. You have missed my whole point and now I'm questioning your understanding of my belief on this topic. Anyway, there is no doubt the combined team would have support. But most wouldn't be behind it like we would be behind a Wollongong side on its own. A combined side does not feel like "my" team... I dont consder myself a "Sydneysider" and Wollongong and Southern Sydney are completely different areas. And your argument about Manly people is exactly my point. They don't "relate" but only support Sydney FC because its the only team to follow. If there was a North Sydney side do you honestly think they would support Sydney FC? First of all im well aware that you are for a wollongong only bid. That much was made very clear. I was only replying in relation to the option of 3 areas playing in 1 stadium compared to 3, and how you mentioned that 1 stadium would be dumb option... There was no option for wollongong only. Secondly, if the A-league only has room for 2 clubs they need to take the absolute best option available that will likely grow out into bigger clubs that represent a bigger area. Hence why the combo of 3 different associations will work. Sure it wont for a few Wolves Die hards, but it will for all the others. Just like it does for people in Manly following Syd FC. It's not as if those people have decided not to follow A-league because Manly United aren't in the comp. So by saying "They don't "relate" but only support Sydney FC because its the only team to follow. If there was a North Sydney side do you honestly think they would support Sydney FC?" that answers my point very clearly. Yes people from Manly support a team that represents a larger area, and thus Sydney fc can rely on support from a wide ranging net, which results in being the second most attended team in the comp (historically). So taking that theory it can replicate very well for the Southern Sydney bid. Also having listened to both Craig Foster and Les Murray speak on the Wolrd Game podcast yesterday, im convinced they know what they are doing. Foster wouldn't do it if he didn't think they could get the grassroots support. They will likely be a major success, even if some people from the gong will not necessarily follow them, others from the area will. Unless it was a Manly team the people I know from Manly would support Sydney FC over a North Sydney team. Any northern Sydney team needs to be around Chatswood.

+xIf Les and Foster are involved then the plan will be for a redevelopment of Barton Park as part of the Cooks Cove development. Les has been pushing this for years. Just looked this up on google earth, would they really want to be this far north? That would really box Sydney FC in then wouldn't it.

With South Sydney assumedly coming in and Sydney FC being somewhat stuck with little options for a smaller boutique ground, would Leichardt Oval be an option for Sydney FC if they approached who ever owns it with an offer of spending some money on it to get it up to scratch for cheap to non existant rent or part ownership or something along those lines? In my head it would also open Sydney FC up to the North Sydney market with the Ryde and Chatswood areas both having access to Leichhardt and the light rail from Central aswell? Forgive me I'm somewhat thinking out loud here.

It is probably closer to a train station than the SFS is to Central, but no pubs along the way and you'd have to cross a main road or two to get there. Parking options would be severely limited. Access points would have to be changed to manage traffic flow. Training base would be fine.

+xAustralis FC is a worse name than Brisbane Roar or Real Salt Lake. Lowy suggested clubs should not interfere with the expansion process on the basis of their own agendas if it comes at the cost of the greater good of domestic football. "Those [expansion] teams are going to butt up against existing teams and some existing clubs won't like that," he said. "But we have to look past that and not look to be influenced by the politics, but be influenced by the ultimate growth of the game itself." It probably has more to do with Les's links to St George Budapest. It is only 15 minute by car from Allianz, about the same as NSO on the north side. I don't think Shark Park is ideal either. Kogarah is probably the way to go. It needs a bit of an upgrade but is good enough to start with. You can set up academy fields at Barton Park and in the Shire but Kogarah is a lot more central. The link to Wollongong though is ludicrous and will cruel any long term chance for a Wollongong based team. Really the Southern team should look at an area south of Cooks River to Cronulla, west to Lucas Heights, north back to around East Hills east of the Georges River and back east to the Cooks River under the M5. It has traditional football areas and the burgeoning football area of the Shire

T he M5 from the airport to Heathcote rd and then down Princes Highway down to Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

Southern exposure
Great southern plan: Southern Expansion manager Chris Gardiner with Football South Coast chairman Eddy De Gabriele and chief executive Ann-Marie Balliana this week. THE Southern Expansion A-League bid is so impressive it ticks every possible box, except perhaps one. Identity. Because for the Illawarra, accepting the great southern plan will also mean officially becoming a suburb of Sydney, at least in a sporting sense.
Is the community content with this? Are political and civic leaders comfortable at this major shift in mapping out the region’s future? Because there is no shortage of political groundwork going on in the A-League, as most notably seen in independent MP Andrew Wilkie’s talks with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a Tasmanian bid last year. This isn’t a shot at the Southern Expansion push or trying to argue against what it has to offer.
These are genuine questions. This will be the thorn in the Southern Expansion’s side until a ball is kicked in anger at WIN Stadium. Longer, if NRL counterparts St George Illawarra are any guide, given the debacle over not calling their feeder club the Steelers, almost two decades after the joint venture began. With a Chinese property group investing a $12 million guarantee and a commitment to building a new training base in the Sutherland Shire, Southern Expansion have declared they’re “ready to go now”. In a letter to the Mercury on Friday, expansion bid chairman, the iconic football identity Les Murray backed up their push. “It is this approach, we believe, that has the best chance of finally delivering professional, A-League and W-League football to the Illawarra,” Murray said of their blueprint. “As someone who grew up in the Illawarra, doing all my high-schooling at Berkeley High, watching Corrimal and South Coast United play at Australia’s top football tier, I am personally committed to bringing those days back to the coast.” There is little doubting Murray’s standing in the game and the respect he commands. But there is certainly a sales job ahead to prove Southern Expansion is the best path for the Illawarra and it needs to be more than a scare campaign about having half a team or nothing at all. This has to be something football fans in the region are truly prepared to buy into.
Otherwise, many of the potential supporter base could continue to support the Wanderers or Sydney FC if they’re going to regularly drive to the city to watch games anyway. There is still much to be played out. Sydney FC will continue to heap pressure on Football Federation Australia about their supporter base being hemmed in geographically. There is a great amount of unrest in the National Premier Leagues about delays in expansion plans. The Wolves will launch their bid with a formal release of A-League expansion criteria, as much as Southern Expansion have dismissed their threat outright. WIN Television boss Bruce Gordon remains an X-factor in all of this, with links to both camps. His interest in Network Ten adds a different dynamic to the situation, given they are likely to pick up the free-to-air rights in the new television deal. Interestingly, some, including ex-Mariners, Glory, Wanderers and Dapto Dandaloo defender Dean Heffernan reckons there’s enough room for both. If there were four more teams introduced in the medium-term, could the A-League and football in NSW sustain having six clubs. It seems unlikely, given the other bids involved. We finally know what the great southern plan looks like. Fishing where the fish are, as David Gallop famously said. It’s big, it’s professional and it could be irresistible for the FFA. The lingering question remains about whether it’s the best for the Illawarra’s future?

FOOTBALL ICON’S RESPONSEIn the editorial “Region nothing but a political football” (Illawarra Mercury, March 8, 2017) the Mercury correctly sheds light on what may be perceived as politics being at play in quests to bring A-League football to the Illawarra. For our part at Southern Expansion, however, the mission is far from politics.
It is about enriching the South Coast community through the presence of top quality football and the social benefits a broad professional football club will bring to the region.
From the beginning our vision was a bottom-up rather than top-down approach, to form a partnership with the region’s broad football community by being responsive to its needs.
This is why there is already a signed memorandum of understanding between Football South Coast and the Southern Expansion group.
Our ambition is not to just run an elite men’s football team that will bring glory by winning lots of trophies.
It is far more about bringing value and benefitting all tiers of the game on the South Coast: women, men, children.
We want to provide pathways for the kids via opportunity and development so they may rightly aspire to one day play for the Socceroos or the Matildas.
This will include cost-free academies by way of high quality technical tuition for elite juniors. Though our project straddles three football associations, it should be noted that the Illawarra will be an equal partner in the project.
This is a fully funded commitment we have made. It is this approach, we believe, that has the best chance of finally delivering professional, A-League and W-League football to the Illawarra. As someone who grew up in the Illawarra, doing all my high-schooling at Berkeley High, watching Corrimal and South Coast United play at Australia’s top football tier, I am personally committed to bringing those days back to the Coast. Les Murray AM, Chairman, Southern Expansion. http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/4515139/letters/?cs=304

November 2016 Had the Phoenix not continued in the competition, FFA was ready to introduce a third Sydney team encompassing the Sutherland, St George and Illawarra regions. Despite Sydney FC's opposition, it remains a favoured option for the governing body - but it's unlikely FFA will drive the concept this time around, meaning external investors will be required.
All three associations are still keen to come together and former A-League chief Lyall Gorman, now the chairman on NRL club Cronulla, is eager to accommodate a team at Southern Cross Group Stadium. It's expected any southern Sydney franchise would also play games at WIN Stadium but the Wollongong Wolves, back-to-back NSL champions in 2000 and 2001, believe the South Coast should have its own team and will consider putting forward a bid once FFA releases its criteria.

December 2016 SOUTHERN SYDNEY
WHILE an official consortium is yet to be announced, a Southern Sydney bid would be an early favourite to secure a licence, given the region’s combination of a large population and football interest. Lyall Gorman. Picture : Gregg PorteousSource: News Corp AustraliaFormer A-League boss Lyall Gorman, who now heads up NRL club Cronulla, told SBS the region — which could encompass St George, Sutherland Shire and Illawarra — was ripe for an A-League team. “This is an incredibly logical area - it is rich in football history,” Gorman said. “Its participation rate is remarkable, we have a venue here (Southern Cross Group Stadium), we know the pride and passion, we are seeing that replicated in our NRL team now.” “To be able to unite that as we did in Western Sydney and bring it together as one strong voice and one strong representation in, to be really frank, the global game - would be a very special opportunity.” Gorman also said Cronulla Sharks would consider owning the A-League licence were an expansion club based in the region.

I think Sharks did the research and either couldnt manage the financial sideor thought their brand wouldnt be accepted.
The timing however does seem strange. The criteria hasnt been released yet and FFA have 3 more weeks until the FIFA deadline. I thought Les was mates with Frank or at least good assocites so its not like the bid came out of nowhere.

Gallop is also playing his character in the play
March 2017
"The interest from the Jia Yuan Group - of which we were aware - and the other groups that have expressed an interest in being part of an expanded league, is welcome and shows the potential of the game. "However as we have consistently said individual bids - even well-funded ones - do not address the operating and contractual costs faced by FFA and therefore they do not make expansion instantly viable on their own. There is no point in having a well-funded club working in one geographical area if other clubs are not seeing any benefit or indeed are expected to see the funding model diluted." Southern Sydney A-League club with Chinese-backed consortium set to bid for licence - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
This team is either going to replace Wellington or be the 11th team.

Rhetorical question.
Why can't we just have all the bids that meet the criteria, without jeopardising an exisitng franchise?
Seriously, if Wolves, Southern Sydney ( without playing in the Gong ), Geelong, South Melbourne, Tassie and Canberra all meet the requirements, bloody well put them in.
I know the answer, however FFA must be the only organisation in the world who are happy to stifle growth than promote it. Does my head in.
For the life of me, we have our NT coach saying we need more teams for the development of our players, and it's got to a critical stage. C'mon Gallop and Lowy, pull your fingers out.

The current model sucks. We need more teams to get more TV funding, we need more TV funding to sustain more teams.

I'd suggest a lot of the bids sustainability would be reliant on the annual A-league funding from the TV deal, which afaik only has provisions in the contract for 2 extra teams, as well as the current clubs wanting far more. The current model sucks. We need more teams to get more TV funding, we need more TV funding to sustain more teams. Fox value 6th game @ $6m per season, so expansion ain't happening For those who want 14, have a guess what Fox would pay for a 7th. $7m. Surely try again

+x+x+x+x+x[quote]Rhetorical question. IMO we must expand by 4 teams, not 2.
