its more and more starting to appear that this TV deal was an absolute dud for the game. whats the bet ch 10 will shunt the ALeague to one of its secondary channels?

I assume you or you are aware of people who could have done better...

SIX LONG YEARS.

And after announcing the deal with no FTA partner, Gallop admits that its too little to fund any expansion.

Yeah.  I could have done better.

Yeah.  I could have done better.

I think they did as well as they could with the cards they were dealt.  The silly thing they did was talk up what the value was before it was all sorted, when clearly the ratings were never going to support the sort of figures they were throwing around early days (like $100 mill per annum).

Also, the much vaunted Optus revolution never materialised in support of the A-League, meaning there weren't really any bidders in the game apart from Foxtel.

Well now we have the next CEO on our forum... BTW FFA used a number of consultants including at the advise of M City the same firm that put together the last EPL deal... Also out of interest Super Rugby when the negotiation were being done rated higher than the A-League and had a 20% reduction on the SR part of the ARU deal with Fox...

You must I guess be the head of a major agency, the marketing director of a major blue chip, CEO of a blue chip... you owe it to football to offer your services on the FTA negotiations...

We are so lucky to have someone of your talent on the forum...

You total plonker.

The consultants for the TV deal — brought in at the 11th hour to “maximise competitive tension” according to a memo seen by the Herald Sun — were Adara Partners, which have close ties with FFA chairman Steven Lowy.

David Gonski, a panel member of Adara Partners, is a Westfield director and board director of the Lowy Institute for internation

With a seemingly largest ever deluge of unrelenting gripe this season, its interesting to see that 16/17 is heading back towards 13/14 numbers...

Sydney and Victory on top swinging it? ...Cahill? ....Fox losing the EPL/picking up the individual club channels??

I thought we've all (not excluding myself) become tired of this 'same every year after year, nothing changes' product.

@absent

I think you'll find that the reason the averages are higher than last year are due to a early season Cahill-Yoshi bounce....but crowds and ratings are pretty much back to last years levels

Thanks for the chart ... interesting to pose a question on what key people are worth..

Gorman was pinched from  the Mariners and taken to the A-League ... he made some big calls to turn things around the best known is starting after the NRL & AFL grand finals ... his years were the 20011/12 and two thirds of 2012/13 ... he left ... this year is climbing again and we changed the A-League head ...

Wonders aloud if FFA should get Gorman back in some role ...

Gorman was appointed as Executive Chairman at Wanderers in May 2012 so he wasn't in he A-League role in 2012-13.  Gorman was paid a percentage of the sale price for Wanderers so he has got enough out of football as far as I am concerned.

I think the numbers aren't to bad, particularly when you consider that Fox lost the EPL rights and presumably more than a few football viewers.

Does that show a spike during the ADP/Ono/Heskey season? (Sorry Mid, I think Gorman had fuck all to do with it). Clearly shows how ratings can rise.

This is of interest given TEN is looking like the likely FTA broadcaster for the A-League:

https://mumbrella.com.au/just-much-trouble-ten-433484

Just how much trouble is Ten in?  (Answer:  A lot more than you probably realise).

Ten is facing a financial crunch within weeks - and even without board representation, shareholder Lachlan Murdoch will be the key player in the future of the network, reports Mumbrella's Tim Burrowes

Or of course, they could find a buyer for the network. Which didn’t go terribly well last time they tried that.Which isn’t to say that the company has zero value. Whoever ends up as the next owner, there is still a route for Ten to be profitable as a super low cost offering – even more low cost than it is at the moment. A company that brings in advertising revenues of $676m a year has to be capable of being profitable somehow. But if the next owners were to be Australian-based media companies, the law would need to change first.Media ownership laws aside, News Corp feels like the future owner:
  • Foxtel (which is of course 50% owned by News Corp) now owns 15% of Ten.
  • News Corp boss Lachlan Murdoch owns 9%;
  • The ad sales are already done by MCN (which is mainly owned by the News Corp-aligned Foxtel).
  • Most of Ten’s biggest reality shows are already produced by the News Corp-aligned Endemol Shine.
  • One of Ten’s key US supply deals is with the News Corp-aligned Fox (via sister company 21st Century Fox)
But of course, the media ownership laws would have to change first. And by a funny coincidence, Australia’s sleepiest minister Mitch Fifield is bringing them back to Parliament this week, for what’ll be the last chance to get change through this side of Easter. As Crikey’s Glenn Dyer argued on Friday:
“The winner from such a deal would be News Corp, which, if the “two out of three” rule were removed as proposed, would be able to buy Ten (and add it to its Foxtel and Sky News broadcasting assets). And the case for the ACCC approving such a transaction would be strengthened if the participants could plausibly argue that Ten was in danger of going insolvent due to its inability to source new cash or meet its debt obligations.”

Now my maths aren't the best but if you tally up the numbers in each city it works out to be 131k .. that is without Melbourne. How are these numbers calculated?

Even though Pippinu (aka Mr Afl ) is trying to troll, it's really average ratings for AFL who foxtel paid 10 x as much for as they did football.
There only getting 191k, 154 & 144k , we all would die for those ratings;  but for the money foxtel has spent on AFL,  they should be getting 300k + for that kind $$.

Umm, no.  Its actually much better than it looks.  The AFL broadcast deal has different games on FTA in different cities, and game times can be the same or significantly overlap.  So both Perth games are on FTA in Perth, and the Eagles game is also on at the same time as the Crows game, and the Crows game is also on FTA in Adelaide and Melbourne.

So, in basically the same timeslot, they got about 300k watching 2 AFL games on Fox, despite both games being on FTA in their biggest markets.  As people keep saying, its not ratings driving Fox, its subscriptions, and for that, its the COMBINED ratings thats the indicator, not the individual ratings.
So 191k watched the Dockers Geelong game
154k + 144K watched the Eagles game and the Crows game, despite the FTA in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

That is excellent.

Nope there rubbish for the money spent,  in fact even 300k is poor for the money, you're talking well over 1 billion  dollars spent by foxtel alone for 200k viewers.
Foxtel is a dying product, within 10 years it will be all over for pay tv, that's why they have paid so much for little return on all their sports, especially AFL & NRL.
