In four of the last five seasons, we've had two seasons fall on exactly 12,300, another two seasons fall on exactly 12,500 (including the current one), which seems to be a fair indicator of where the natural level of A-League attendances sit (which aren't all that bad to be perfectly honest).

Pretty good crowds all round, it's just the Nix and the Mariners keeping the average down.

To average around 9k this time of year is probably par for course.

Average attendances:

Looks like we're on for our fourth consecutive fall in average attendances. Given the boost the two ANZ derbies gave attendances this season the FFA should be concerned.

Hopefully they've got something better lined up in marketing than "you've gotta have a team" and "a summer of football" and "the business end of the season" ... it's the worst marketing of any code and it's just not working.

Another way of looking at it is that we have a good degree of stability and consistency with attendances constantly falling in the 12,300 to 12,500 zone, and there is nothing wrong with that.  It's a very good average attendance figure to be able to maintain over the long term, especially when viewed in global terms.

You'd have to work at the ffa to take that opinion.

13,000 average crowds are not beyond the code so accepting the stagnation is not acceptable. And if you add the net effect of the extra crowds at ANZ the crowds are falling even further this season possibly below 12k which should be alarming. If the trend continues then next season we will see an 11,xxx average.

Wanderers, Roar and Sydney are all under performing and everyone else bar Victory could do better. The first step in finding a solution is to acknowledge the problem, not redefine the problem as a positive (that's the FFAs way of thinking).

And the ffa end this season with more disenfranchised fans than last season when they had a boycott, the HAL needs some new thinking but the ffa don't seem to have it.

To consistently fall in the 12,300 to 12,500 zone means that some seasons it will push up towards a 13,000 average, and in other seasons it will fall closer to 12,000, and I would say long term that's a more than acceptable outcome.

In fact, if we can maintain averages above 12k when we go to 12 teams, that would represent an absolutely outstanding outcome.

The 4 year trend means that crowds will fall below 12k next season. They are not "oscillating" they are declining steadily year on year. it would take an April fool to ignore the bleading obvious.

Now an average of 12k with a 12 team comp, that might be acceptable however why not 13k still? South Sydney would pretty much guarantee an average attendance of 13k with three derbies each season and South Sydney shouldn't be far behind that.

The year started off so well for season attendants with Nix's being the low point in almost ever round, however the drop off from then to now is something the FFA need to work on.

The last 9 rounds of the season will trickle in at about 10,200 average per game, compared to 13192 for the first 18 rounds. We could get so much uplift if we went to 14 teams home and away only. But the FFA don't factor that in when talking about what we can and can't afford. They'd rather stick with their flawed model out of vanity than see the numbers staring them in the face. We don't want to see the same opponent 3 times, plus cup, plus finals. Take a hint Dave.

Friday night attendances:

• Fri HAL Crowd - Melb City v Adelaide - 9,238 at at Aami Park

Pretty good for City vs Adelaide, I imagine the long term average would be less than that.  They got to see the FFA's marquee man head home the winner.

We often talk about the A-League catching NRL attendances, but the two NSW games last night got pretty good attendances:

• Fri NRL Crowd - Knights v Bulldogs - 16,929 at McDonaldJones Stadium
• Fri NRL Crowd - Panthers v Rabbitohs - 15,535 at Pepper Stadium

That's good in anyone's language.

The Swans had the largest attendance of the night:

• Fri AFL Crowd - Swans v Pies - 35,310 at the SCG

That's actually well below the forecast during the week, so I think both the Swans and the AFL would be very disappointed with that attendance.

That's a pretty decent crowd by City, for them anyway - I was expecting something like 7-8k.

In terms of average crowd comparisons football should be targeting NRLs average which this season is just under 15k with football just over 12k.

Melbourne City average this season was 10555, down from 11047 last season and up on 10405 from 14/15
