What boost?

He's single handedly halted the slide in Memberships, Attendances and Ratings giving us the base on which to lift next season

Add the Brand Refresh, the FTA coverage and more Marquees and we'll see a big increase next year.

Love the use of capital letters for Brand Refresh and Marquees

To be fair the lesson learnt if the Marquee Strategy is to be maintained is perhaps focus on netting genuine world stars in their late-twilight

Australians had plenty of opportunities to watch Timmy in his heyday playing WCQs and friendlies. Seems a bit much to expect that people not already engaged will flock to A League games in droves for the possibility that Timmy might nod one in.

Very good point. I think you are right. With Cahill going to major capital cities most fans have seen him for the Socceroos and he doesn't necessarily bring the big occassion with him. I think he has offered a boost but not in the way Fowler, Yorke and ADP did. More like the way Hesky and Ono did. Question is can we still bring these big names here ? Surely we can work with Sponsors to do it. I remember when the NSL lost many of it's marquee players it also lost alot of interest.

Cahill was greatest for his ability to cut through to mainstream media...
City grew from mid 9,000 members to over 13k members.

That's a stupid argument that isn't only faced by City, but others like Victory etc. More members than rocking up to games.
I find it a stupid argument as members means guaranteed money... If I'm a full season member they're getting the same amount of my money regardless if I rock up to 1 game or 13...

Yeah.

Stupid argument. Cos Melbourne Citeh doesn't need crowds, it needs more guaranteed money.

Slim pickings with China/US/Middle East around. Either way the FFA shouldn't be involved in paying for players

For me there are underlying concerns, the overall trend is down, even MV must be slightly concerned.

Seasonal aberrations based on performance will always occu,r and whilst derbies are a great sugar hit, they are clearly not answer to all of the ills facing the league.

Games drawing above 20k have dropped for the last two seasons from a high of 17 to14.

Games drawing in the 15 to 20k range have dropped from a high of 27 to 16.

Games drawing between 10-15k have dropped from 54 matches to 47.

Whilst games between 5k. & 10k have increased from 46 to 59.

Plenty of reasons and excuses to be found, but the underlying trend is one of softening attendance and apparently waning interest .....action needs to be taken, now!

Geez if there was ever a JoFFA post that summed it up perfectly.

Even the desperation in Melbourne Victory's email said it all. 'Plz dont go'.

If the City crowds were up I'd agree with you but they weren't. TV ratings are hardly better.

Let's say a City membership costs $400 for arguments sake. The extra 4,000 members have brought in an extra $1.6m for the club. What's Timmy on a year, $3m wasn't it?

Money would go to the club of course not FFA, so the FFA loses out on their investment really.

16-17: AVE: 10,573          Non Derby AVE: 9,396

Only cost the FFA $500k. Absolute bargain

Gallop needs lauding for making it happen.

Timmy would have added at least $10m to the TV deal with that opening goal against Victory alone.

What has that got to do with anything?
as long as we see continued growth in the AVE crowd outside of the derby and continuing to get over 10k for memberships I'm happy.

I'm sure it'll happen, it's just going to take longer than people expected. City need a constant supply of big name Euro marquees to get it happening, for at least another 5 years. Just like when they had Villa. I think it was around 18k on a Sunday afternoon at AAMI against Newcastle Jets. Crowds died off when he left.

Until they build a bigger supporter base they're going to have to bring in the big names.

So we can come to a consensus that it did not work be it Villa or Cahill that once the player leaves, as do the crowds and that marquee player, whilst having an initial impact are to shallow to maintain sustained growth.

Gotcha.
