Chris HydeThe hallowed rugby ground of Brisbane's Ballymore could soon be defiled by the beautiful game – a consortium of local business folk is expected to unveil plans on Friday for a second A-League soccer club for the northern capital. Plans to establish the club are at an advanced stage, with proponents claiming it would inject new life into Ballymore – a paddock that has been overshadowed by its cross-town rival Suncorp Stadium – and establish a much sought-after derby for the national soccer league in Brissie. Sources report some big names from the Brisbane business community are involved in the consortium, details of which are expected to be revealed at a news conference on Friday. The new club would be spun out of an existing Brisbane soccer club – which would own a small percentage of the new entity. Some of the backers of the new club are believed to have been owners of A-League clubs in the past. The team behind the new bid is believed to have been in discussion with Queensland Rugby Union for more than six months about making Ballymore – in the city's inner-north – the team's home ground. "The QRU are really excited about it," said our source. "The Reds train there but play at Suncorp. It would be a complete rejuvenation of the place." Dear god! Brissie is now home to one A-League team only in the Brisbane Roar, a team that is owned by Indonesian industrialist Nirwan Bakrie and which has had more than its fair share of drama. If Ballymore isn't viable for the established and presumably larger QR outfit then I don't see it working for a second smaller team.
Any bets on who the existing club and minority shareholder is? Easy to say Strikers, but would be pretty interesting if it were the Lions or another former NSL outfit like City.

Here comes Brisbane's "serious bid"; Ballymore needs a major facelift that the QRU can't afford so if they can fund it and negotiate good commercial terms they'll be $2 million better off than Roar straight away.
Former owners of an A league club then they've either been involved in pizza or coffee, most likely pizza. And the local clubs involvement, strikers are dysfunctional but Brisbane City have both commercial connections as well as deep connections in football across the state.
Watch for the quality and detail in the bid - does it look like South Sydneys full of detail and backed by heavyweights or is it more of a concept that's waiting fir the FFAs "criteria"? I'm guessing this is going to be a detailed bid ...

If this was Red Bull we'd know by now. This is a consortium of local businessmen including former A League operators/owners (god help them if they're former Roar owners because the Bakries aren't the worst owners we've ever had). The commercial success will depend on the deal they've struck with Ballymore, then they're going to have to overcome local sports fans resistance to going there on mass. It's not out of the way but it's a good walk on a hot summers day.

The surface at Ballymore is carpet like and would shit all over Suncorp. This would be win / win for Union and the A-League. The joint needs a spruce up and Suncorp is a giant hole unless it's full to the brim with punters.

Waz called it: South Sydney and a 2nd Brisbane team, in for the 2018-19 season, in line with the broadcast deal.
Looks like it's bad news for South Melbourne, which easily has the best bid at this point in time. Wolves will be on the outer as well.

Maybe in participation numbers, but in terms of the numbers which matter at the professional level: attendances, memberships, sponsorship, annual revenue, the Victory is miles and miles ahead of the Roar. City is still smallish, but importantly, has not impacted on the Victory's supporter and revenue base at all. It remains to be seen whether that will be the case in Brisbane. Personally, I think South Melbourne could have entered the comp, pretty much ready to go, and it would not have impacted on either City or the Victory.

Anyone who has been to Ballymore in recent history will know it needs a lot of TLC to bring it up to scratch. Last time I was there, I noticed a tree-sized weed growing through the pavings near the southern stand. Corporate facilities and food & drink outlets are non-existent, I imagine a heft amount of cash will be needed to entice fans.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Roar are keeping close tabs on this, possibly even being involved at a consultation level as they may consider sharing the ground with the new club. It could possibly save the Roar in the region of $2 million annually in stadium hire fees which would make a huge difference to their bottom line.

The theory of creating new entities in and by itself for expansion is not a solution and is cost heavy.
We do need a second division, the reason for reluctance is the Australian Sporting Landscape has worked on EQUALISATION by REGULATION for so long that they think having low cost smaller clubs won't work. Its just too hard for guys like Gallop to comprehend.
These issues also affect Player Development as evidenced over the last 15 years. And as stated by our National Coach.
What ever happens Expansion, a Second Division and or both the KEY motivation should be the marriage of Status (A-League and Second Division) with Facilities.
Bringing in South Melbourne with a position further secures its facility for Football. The entrance of a Dandenong side by all indications will be supported by facilities development solely for Football this is a key proposition.
As with bids from Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne/Victoria, Tasmania, Canberra, Sydney/NSW and Brisbane/Queensland ALL bids should have at their core the development or acquisition of Football Specific Stadia and Facilities.
Marrying Football Specific Facilities with Status in A-League, a second division and Promotion/Relegation is a no brainer in football development terms, player development terms, National footprint terms, infrastructure terms for capacity and engagement with the Football Playing Community
Otherwise the game and the competition without Football Specific Stadia/Facilities is doomed to failure.
BOOM!!!!!!
If this bid cannot secure a football specific Stadium and Facilities then not good enough.
