geez, they have really expressed their italian heritage through displaying an azzuri jersey on the stage and having green and red balloons everywhere. Looks like their point of different from the roar will be their remote but boutique 20k stadium and their italian identity

@ Williamn

City have been around 40 years longer than strikers who they describe as "plastic" lol. Strikers bid is based on the fact they were booted out of the old NSL and couldn't afford the A league entry fee (only one group could - the Lions) so I don't think city will struggle more than strikers - in fact, watch out for an Italian marquee, they won't stray too far from their heritage lol

Crest looks nice, the choice of maroon is very wise and aesthetically pleasing and they don't have a nickname as bad as the Glory, Roar or Jets

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Good thing about theirs is it is just a nick name where as Glory,Roar,Jets,Victory etc are part of the teams name.

BRISBANE City has entered the A-League expansion race after revealing a comprehensive bid that has been warmly received by Football Federation Australia.

The former National Soccer League side has a group of local investors in place who are backing them to return to Australian football’s top tier after a 39-year absence.

If approved, FC Brisbane City — or the Gladiators — would play out of a refurbished Ballymore Stadium and undergo a full rebranding, with a new logo and maroon, gold and blue as their primary colours to pitch themselves to a wider audience.

Bid chairman Robert Cavallucci has met multiple times with FFA executives who were impressed by their level of organisation, with their plans nine months in the making.

It’s understood no other current bid is as detailed and elements of it outstrip some A-League clubs, as Brisbane City seek to become derby rivals for the Roar and make Brisbane a two-team town like Sydney and Melbourne.

Cavallucci said the initial response from FFA had been “fantastic” while A-League broadcasters Fox Sports were also fully supportive.

“Our bid is complete. Our funding model is secure. We are ready to join the A-League,” said Cavallucci, who made the announcement at a luncheon in Brisbane on Friday.

“In our view, Brisbane is ready for two teams as well. To think it can’t support two teams is misguided.

“But we know it’s not just about us, it’s about how we can help grow the A-League as a whole, and increase attendances and TV ratings.

“Our plan, and the introduction of a Brisbane derby, can make that happen.”

A prominent Brisbane businessman and one-time state politician, Cavallucci’s consortium wanted to buy the struggling Brisbane Roar last year from Indonesian conglomerate the Bakrie Group.

When their “rescue package” was knocked back, they decided to use it as a foundation for an A-League expansion bid instead and put their resources behind Brisbane City, who were founded in 1952 by Italian immigrants.

Their 80-page proposal to join the A-League covers everything from governance structures, ticket pricing, supporter engagement and football operations to public transport, women’s football and Indigenous development.

The bid’s investors would also fund a refurbishment of Ballymore to bring it to A-League standard, with the 18,000-capacity venue to host all of Brisbane City’s home games, including derbies.

The close proximity of their clubhouse at Spencer Park and plans for gourmet food trucks and improved public transport links could make Ballymore a distinctly different stadium experience to Suncorp Stadium.

The Roar currently train at Ballymore but will move into a new facility at Logan, south of Brisbane, towards the end of the year, and Cavallucci wants to create a north-versus-south divide to stoke their rivalry.

FFA has pushed aside expansion as it deals with a raft of governance issues but it’s still expected two new teams will join the competition, but not until the 2018-19 season at the earliest.

@ ToldyaSo

It's been on the agenda for years Roar moving to Ballymore.

Before the HAL started Uncle Frank insisted on Suncorp. Five years later Roar looked at moving to Ballymore but it was falling apart and no one could agree who pays for it, it was brought up for discussion again a couple of years ago at a fan forum and it was pretty clear most fans were against it. When Roar played an FFA Cup game there earlier this year the social media sites went off against it .... Ballymore is not easy to get to, even a refurbished stadium will still have to overcome this one

The consequence of playing there is likely to be crowds of 9-10k at best but it should look good, sound good, and cost less so it will be okay. But they need to put roofs over each end otherwise they'll get 5k on wet or sunny days. It's a risk going to Ballymore but one worth taking for BC

The surface at Ballymore is carpet like and would shit all over Suncorp.

This would be win / win for Union and the A-League.  The joint needs a spruce up and Suncorp is a giant hole unless it's full to the brim with punters.

With all the discussions of the GF being played straight after a Rugby game, I don't see how sharing a stadium with a rugby team is going to be any good for the aleague club. THey might want to have certain booking criteria in place first to prevent rugby being played the night before a match.

Pretty sure the Reds don't even use the ground that much though, as like most have said it needs an upgrade.

Reds play at Suncorp, although might be interesting to see if they'll come back once refurbished (for their smaller crowds)

Ballymore's empty, just used  for training and the QRU club finals as far as I know

Update
Although the Queensland Reds now play their Super Rugby matches at Suncorp Stadium, Ballymore is still used for hundreds of games during the year, from the Queensland Premier Rugby finals to the junior state championships and grand finals.
