FFA Cup 2017: Round of 32 qualified teams, schedule, results, fixtures

THERE was late drama and upsets as the six NSW entrants for the 2017 FFA Cup Round of 32 were confirmed.

APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Blacktown City FC, Bankstown Berries FC, Hakoah Sydney City East FC and Hills Brumbies all secured their places with victories in their final NSW Preliminary Round fixtures.

NSW only have five spots allocated for the Round of 32, but a sixth team - Sydney United 58 FC - had already sealed their place after winning the NPL Final Series last year.

Ten state-level teams - including four from Victoria - have now qualified and will join 10 A-League teams in the knockout rounds, which begin at the end of July.

That means there’s still 12 spots up for grabs across Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia, Northern NSW, and ACT in the remaining Preliminary Round games.

Scroll down to see the how the action unfolded in NSW and which teams are vying for Round of 32 spots.

WHAT HAPPENED IN NSW QUALIFYING?

APIA earned their first-ever spot in the knockout rounds with a matchwinner in the sixth minute of second-half extra-time stoppage-time to beat National Premier League 3 (NPL3) side Southern District Raiders 2-1.

Despite having former Mariner and Sky Blues Ivan Neceveski in goals, a first half penalty stunned the NPL1 side.

However, Michael West equalised with the final kick of regular time to send the game into extra time.

With spot-kicks looming, Paul Galimi fired APIA ahead in the 126th minute – the 61st shot of on target according to APIA - and sparked wild celebrations from 1000 spectators.

Necevski will now get a shot at FFA Cup redemption after Central Coast were eliminated by Green Gully in the 2016 Round of 32.

NPL1 team Sydney Olympic were surprisingly knocked out by the Berries 1-0, who play in the division below.

Blacktown City were dominant in a 3-0 victory over Bulli FC to seal their fourth successive Round of 32 spot.

Hakoah overcame Rockdale City Suns 3-1 after the side of former Sky Blue Paul Reid was reduced to 10 men after 40 minutes.

Newly promoted NPL 2 side Hull Brumbies ran out 5-2 victors of Illawarra Premier League outfit Kemblawarra Dapto Fury FC.

WHAT IS THE FFA CUP?

The FFA Cup pits 32 of Australia’s best professional, semi-professional and amateur clubs against each other in a knockout competition to crown the champions of the country.

Hundreds of Member Federations clubs face-off in the preliminary rounds, before 22 teams join the 10 A-League clubs to battle it out in the knockout stages and eventually the FFA Cup final.

HOW DOES THE TOURNAMENT WORK?

Every state is allocated a different number of spots in the Round of 32 (as per below).

Each state determines their Round of 32 entrants through up to seven preliminary knockout rounds - so even the deep grassroots are involved!

From there, the 32 clubs vie in the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semi finals and FFA Cup final.

CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR?

Football Federation Victoria had to add another round of additional preliminary matches to cater for the 217 teams entered, as opposed to 203 last year. A record number of 83 clubs also registered in Northern NSW.

Miracle four-goal comeback

Miracle four-goal comeback

2:01

HOW MANY CLUBS WILL PLAY THIS YEAR?

This year a record 721 clubs competed in this year’s Preliminary Rounds. Once you add the A-League clubs and Sydney United 58 FC, the total will see 732 teams whittled down to 32.

United get automatic entry to the Round of 32 after winning the National Premier League 2016 Finals Series.

Tuggeranong United breath life into season after booking Federation Cup final ticket

Tuggeranong United are on the brink of another fairytale FFA Cup run after breathing life into their season and booking a place in the Federation Cup final.

United only have two wins from seven NPL Capital Football starts this season but defeated the Monaro Panthers 3-1 in cup semi-final on Thursday night.

Coach Sean Murphy was part of the club's dream run in 2014 when United was knocked out of the inaugural FFA Cup in the round of 16 by A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory.

The only remaining player from that campaign is United captain Cameron Doherty and Murphy said he would reflect on the experience to motivate his players ahead of the final next Saturday.

"I'm absolutely delighted for the boys to get through, the club experienced it three years ago and they clearly want another piece of the action," Murphy said.

"I played in the final a few years ago when we beat Cooma and then we played Hobart away in the round of 32 and won on penalties.

"After that we had Melbourne Victory at Viking Park which was a great experience, but Hobart was probably a better experience because we got to get on a plane and go get a really gutsy win.

"I'll use anything to get the boys going, so I'll tell definitely talk about that run but I don't think I'll have to say anything to get the boys motivated for this one."

On the NPL ladder United sit eight points adrift of the finals-bound top four, but Murphy is confident his men can close the gap with victory against Cooma on Sunday.

"I really believe that if we get a couple of wins together we can get close to the top four, we're not far off with a few games in hand so it's there for us," Murphy said.

"I don't think there's a huge difference in teams in Canberra at the moment. If you looked at the table before the semi-final you'd say Monaro would be easy but it was really tough and if they snatched a goal it could have been different.

"Against Cooma we're looking for some consistency and to start stringing some wins together, we beat Deakin [Canberra FC] but haven't gone on from there, we've got to stop giving away stupid goals."

Winger Nick Faust has proved a revelation for United this season with Murphy rating the 17-year-old a future A-League prospect.

"Nicky is special talent with his pace and energy, he trains hard and is a coach's dream. He can read the game, is quality on the ball and in the air, basically his all round game is at the next level," Murphy said.

"He scores goals as well, so he's definitely one to watch and he'll be looking for a good showing in the final and then hopefully he can test himself on the big stage against some A-League boys."

Tuggeranong face Canberra Olympic in the Federation Cup final at Deakin Stadium next Saturday at 2pm.

FNQ Heat 6-1 FFA Cup win paves way for A-League side to visit Cairns in Round of 32

FNQ Heat will potentially have their shot at an A-League club in the FFA Cup Round of 32 after slamming Mackay Magpies 6-1 at Endeavour Park on Saturday night.

An engaging contest unfolded in the opening 10 minutes before the home side asserted their dominance of possession.

After a couple of missed opportunities, the first goal came in the 25th minute when Josh Jennison headed home an easy finish, cleaning up the scraps off the post from what started as a Charlie Beverley freekick.

The next one came nine minutes later when Kasper Holmbech crossed to Josh Pin at the back post, who headed it down to Jamie Carroll to turn and put it in the back of the net.

Heat captain Jamie Carroll (right) is congratulated by Josh Pin after scoring a goal. Picture: BRENDAN RADKE
Fellow striker Chris Sullivan joined the act in the 43rd minute after a crafty piece of play from Carroll.

He was set to receive a ball from defender Jack Glover but threw the dummy and let Sullivan through to send it home.

It took only two minutes into the second half for Sullivan to get his brace off a Shigeki Ono cross.

Mackay finally had something to smile about in the 75th minute when Warrick Jansen scored, but the Heat put the frowns back on their faces through MJ Nkiwane and Pin in the 77th and 78th minute respectively.

The win opens the door to an A-League team visiting Cairns in the Round of 32.

The Heat play Brisbane Strikers when NPL Queensland action resumes next weekend.

Knights recruit former Socceroo for Cup final

GLENORCHY Knights have filled the hole left by the suspension of star attacker Mathew Nowicki with former Socceroo and Melbourne Victory striker Danny Allsopp for tomorrow’s Lakoseljac Cup final.

Allsopp, 38, made over 100 appearances with Melbourne Victory, winning the premiership and championship double, as well as the golden boot, in the 2006-07 season before retiring from the A-League in 2012.

He will join the Knights for their final against the Olympia Warriors at KGV tomorrow, replacing Nowicki in the squad after the Glenorchy striker was sent off in last week’s loss to Beachside.

Allsopp will also be included in the squad for FFA Cup games if the Knights, who play in the second-tier Southern Championship, manage to qualify with a win tomorrow.

He was impressed with the standard at Glenorchy’s training session yesterday, and says he’s in good shape ahead of the clash.

“I haven’t been playing too much, just bits and pieces here and there but I’ve been running and kept myself fit enough,” Allsopp said.

“Match fitness is another thing, but I will be relying on my experience and a bit of adrenaline, it’s a huge occasion and I am looking forward to it.”

Glenorchy president Tony Bacic said the signing was a direct result of Nowicki’s suspension.

“Prior to that we had no intentions whatsoever to bring anyone in,” Bacic said.

“We went out there and found someone so we could put the option on the table for the coaching staff if they wanted to have someone else,” he said.

Olympia president George Mamacas believes a player should have to take to the pitch in at least a semi-final before he’s eligible to play in a cup final.

“We’re happy to play whoever is in front of us, and we’ll beat them regardless,” Mamacas said.

“We certainly harbour no ill feeling toward Danny or the Knights Football Club, as they are doing their best to win the game, however going forward on principle and morals this should be looked at and addressed.”

It will not be the first time Allsopp has played in Tasmania.

He guest starred for Launceston City in a 6-0 loss to Northern Rangers in 2013.

In 2014 he returned for City, scoring a hat-trick as Launceston snapped a 25-game winless streak by beating Hobart Zebras 4-2.
