I read the other day that Port is getting $4 million for that game, and is paying the Suns $500k out of that money.

And where did you read that?

So we have two claims, neither supported with a link:

1. Port paying China $700k
2. Port getting $4m in sponsorship etc

Until a link is provided by either I think the placeholder assumption should be that Port are getting $1.65 million, which is the mid point.

Radical new concept AFLX set to be launched on pre-finals bye weekend

THE AFL is reportedly preparing to launch a Twenty20-inspired version of the game later this year which is seen as the answer to opening up international markets.

After months of secret trials, AFLX — a high-octane, seven-a-side version of football played on soccer-sized grounds with quarters shortened to 10 minutes — is being slated to be shown off to fans on the pre-finals bye weekend this year.

DO YOU LIKE THE CONCEPT? HAVE YOUR SAY BELOW

The AFL says it is looking to showcase the new version of the game between the best players from teams that miss this year’s finals series.

Hawthorn is likely to miss the finals for the first time since 2009.

Prizemoney and incentives are being discussed while matches which could be televised nationally on Fox Footy.

The Herald Sun reported in February that Port Adelaide was putting its weight behind the AFLX concept as it looks to grow the game in China.

“We’ve had Auskick and AFL approved by the Chinese education department in Beijing to be an approved sport to play at school,” Power chairman David Koch said.

RELATED: VFL PLAYERS TRIAL AFLX

“So they’re massive steps forward for us to try the game up there. But it’s all about the field and that’s why sevens is a way better option.”

AFL football operations boss Simon Lethlean told the Herald Sun at the time that AFLX had a point of difference that could attract new fans.

Basic ground set up for AFLX.

“Any time you can get the best players playing in a different, fun format, I think it’s shown it can be successful in other sports and we think our product’s as good as everyone’s so we’re trying to find different ways and options to play,” he said.

The AFL trialled the concept with North Melbourne during the pre-season and made adjustments after a series of further practice matches between players from VFL sides.

Port Melbourne coach and former Hawthorn champion Gary Ayres was part of the trials and said in March he was a fan of AFLX.

“It is very, very fast. It’s very much about high-scoring, fast play,” he said.

“If you get burnt on a turnover or a poor kick or poor decision, generally you get scored against and scored against very quickly. It’s a bit like (the ball is) up one end one second and then up the other end in another.

“If you can retain possession, you can certainly score and score quite heavily.”

WHAT IS AFLX?

PLAYED on a soccer-size pitch. Trial games have been played between teams of seven players, with three on the interchange bench.

ONE umpire, no centre bounces and kick-ins from full-back after each goal.

QUARTERS last 10 minutes.

AFL's desire to become football becomes yet a step closer. I can genuinely see AFL giving up on their game and becoming out and out football clubs.

In all honestly I think it is a clever move. They could play at Aami and have a double or triple header. they would sell out. Probably sell out Etihad also. For tv though Aami would look better.

It is also a way for them to try and shame football crowds in the media.

In all honesty perhaps Vic needs AFLX to get a bigger stadium built, although it seems unlikely with AFL owning their own stadium now.

Perhaps..... in reality im sure League and Union had their doubters when they started 7s etc. Now it is an Olympic sport (not that AFLX would ever become that) and they are both popular and succesful.

I guess the danger is, as with 20/20 cricket and Rugby 7's, that this version of the game turns out to be more interesting than the original.

It looks fun, wouldn't mind playing myself if I was younger. Here is their problem - kids will love this game (it will be delivered with BBL fanfare) but like kids are now struggling to adapt back to Test Cricket the kids will not adapt back to full AFL. Within 10-20 years big crowds will be a thing of the past

In the case of cricket the danger is that the sport becomes 10 times more popular and 1% as interesting

I just don't see how it doesn't involve having a crack at goals whenever you have the balls and hoping for a goal over a behind.

You know this might have the same effect as T/20 has on cricket with test matches dying out in popularity. Just have to wait and see really.

@select

This is a problem in Australian sport. I am a proponent of sports clubs. Would this damage the Saints by playing this? Probably not.

AFL like FFA control the IP. It's almost a crime imo. Their brands.

If IP ever goes to A-League clubs I think WSW & CCM should make a play for NRL and if that failed English Super League. There are several AFL clubs that could make it in football imo. It's not the 90s anymore.

Imagine boutique stadium that was home to 1 or 2 AFL clubs playing AFLX and football.

I've got plenty of mates who live afl on weekends, they watch a majority of the games and they think the concepts a joke.

Would clubs really want to risk players injuring themselves in the off season for a Mickey Mouse comp.

I'd be filthy if a superstar of my club suffered the following season due to burnout.
