Would have been better if they were wearing Melb City polos or something, but whatever.. Any publicity for the A-League is good I guess.

It used to be just a named tradition, but then it was the squad for the International Series. Now.. sort of sits somewhere in between. Those named, if they want to play, will probably play. Otherwise, most of them demand their holiday.

+xThe all-Australian team has its roots in the old state carnival days before the AFL. They may not have played an opponent, but were selected as the bbest hypothetical team from around the country based on their performance at the carnival. It's amazing how worked up people get over it though.

It's amazing how worked up people get over it though. I always find it bizarre how it's considered a significant individual honour, both here and in America (NFL in particular). No one really gives a shit about someone who was named in the Team of the season a few years ago in other sports but on these shores and in the states, it earns you the naming title of All-Australian or All-American for eternity. Even in the ultra-nationalistic GAA All Star awards, they don't wank on about it half as much as here. Also as an unlikely fan of the International Rules series, I hate how International Rules selection s is now linked to AA selection. Different game, different skill set required.

Blue coup During their Melbourne visit, Carlton Football Club pulled off one of the great PR coups thanks to club GM Keith McKenzie. "When we knew they were about to land at Tullamarine I told our marketing bloke Michael Whitewood, 'Grab a couple of guernseys, get up to the airport and take them out to ABBA'", McKenzie says. ABBA singers Agnetha and Frida even wore the jumpers years later in a film clip. ABBA's Agnetha and Frida wearing Carlton's jumpers. Otherwise, most of them demand their holiday. The All-Australian team can be fairly different to the International Series team ... mainly due to the different nature of the game (the Irish tend to be smaller body and fleet of foot). So more small forwards get picked than big power forwards / ruckmen (that are included in the All-Australian side). The All-Australian side is similar in vein to the the A-League team of the season. Not sure if similar to the NBA all-star sides where players get bonuses if selected (remember Bogut got a $1 million bonus for being named in the NBA Defensive Team of the year).

Tbf, Rugby is actually a popular sport in Argentina so there is a chance he knows who they are. It's not as if it is AFL. Although there is still time for that disaster to take place.
